Visions And Revisions: Women And The Power To Change, Elaine Reuben, Florence Howe, Barbara Smith, Charlotte Bunch, Arlie Hochschild, Amy Swerdlow

Women's Studies Quarterly

This final panel, summing up and looking ahead at the end of the First NWSA Convention, borrowed part of its title from the collection of essays on feminism and education Women and the Power to Change [1975]. Contributors to that volume, and other writer-organizers joining them here, were asked to reflect on their work of the early '70s and to offer their analyses—and their visions—for the '80s.

Sessions On Oral History, Betty Burnett Jul 1979

Sessions On Oral History, Betty Burnett

Women's Studies Quarterly

Since feminist historians largely concur that traditional documentation ignores, obscures, and distorts women's lives, nontraditional material logically ought to be a prime resource for women's studies scholars. Nevertheless, the collection, evaluation, and use of oral history pose a number of problems.

At several sessions, participants described the accumulation of material from almost every part of the country that needs to be organized, analyzed, and indexed. So far, oral history projects have been primarily regional and therefore not granted the prestige that national projects have received. Most of the women interviewed are "ordinary"—not well educated, not politically active, not considered economically …

Applying Feminist Approaches To Learning And Research: A Practical Curriculum Model, Ann C. Carver Apr 1979

Applying Feminist Approaches To Learning And Research: A Practical Curriculum Model, Ann C. Carver

Women's Studies Quarterly

By "Feminist Approaches to Learning" I mean a process of "breaking the accustomed mold" of established learning (to use Florence Howe's language). I mean learning to take the risk of questioning knowledge itself, using the creative expressions of women's cultures for the subject of study, and drawing upon the positive "ways of doing" in women's cultures for classroom and research methods.

The three operating principles for my course in "Teaching Women's Literature from a Regional Perspective" grow out of this approach. Those principles are: (1) intense, nonfragmented involvement of the whole person in the creative act of study; (2) sharing, …

Women's Studies In West Germany: Community Vs. Academy, Tobe Levin Jan 1979

Women's Studies In West Germany: Community Vs. Academy, Tobe Levin

Women's Studies Quarterly

Rape, abortion, homes for battered women—these would appear to be the issues of paramount concern to West German feminists at the present time. But high on the list of priorities for 1978 has also been the question of women's studies, a subject of passionate, often bitter debate in recent months, with sides clearly drawn between proponents of differing allegiances. As in the United States, but with sharp differences, the discussion in West Germany focuses on the relationships among women's studies, the women's movement, and the community.

Activists here have been debating the proposed establishment of a "Women's Research Institute" at …

Readers' Speakout, Joan Huber, Fanny Rinn, Alicia J. George, Dawnel C. White, Shirley Morahan

Women's Studies Quarterly

Dear Florence Howe:

Devoting an entire issue to the First Annual Convention of the National Women's Studies Association was enormously helpful to those of us who could not attend. The reports on the Convention indicated that it was simply first-rate. Nothing in the issue, however, helped me to understand why some delegates trashed the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) and scapegoated its representative, Kathleen Staudt. I had hoped to learn why because a number of colleagues returned from the Convention with the story that everyone agreed that AID had no business being there. But no one could explain why. …

Letter From The Road... At Oberlin College, Midway Point..., Margaret Randall Jan 1979

Letter From The Road... At Oberlin College, Midway Point..., Margaret Randall

Women's Studies Quarterly

For three months last fall, Margaret Randall, American-born writer now resident in Cuba and well known for her bestselling Women in Cuba, toured more than 40 U.S. campuses. She began in mid-September at the universities of New Mexico and Arizona, and San Francisco State University, and concluded in late November at M.I.T., Wellesley, and Amherst. Her tour, coordinated by Phyllis Vine, historian at Sarah Lawrence College, testifies to the women's studies community's concern about feminism internationally, and to a broad campus interest in Cuba. At Oberlin, Randall, never a college student herself, taught a one-credit, one-week-long intensive course to 45 …

Lesbian Research Projects, Charlotte Criste Jan 1979

Lesbian Research Projects, Charlotte Criste

Women's Studies Quarterly

As a new member of NWSA, I was unprepared for but delighted by the number and quality of the lesbian-centered sessions. At Kansas, lesbian culture was not only superficially acknowledged, but validated and treated with respect as a significant aspect of women's studies.

The Friday morning panel, "Voices of the Lesbian Community: A Workshop on Researching, Archiving, and Teaching," presented a wealth of images. From the Cambridge Women's Center, we heard Chris Czernik report on a teacher's responsibility to include all aspects of women's culture in her courses: "If I am doing an introductory section on AfroAmerican women," Czernik noted, …

International Programming, Peg Strobel Jan 1979

International Programming, Peg Strobel

Women's Studies Quarterly

The NWSA took several important steps in international programming at its First Convention. Those participating in sessions included women from Argentina, Britain, Ghana, Holland, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Senegal, and Zanzibar. Three national leaders of the All China Women's Federation of the People's Republic of China spent a day touring the Convention. But more important than the mere presence of foreign visitors were the information and issues generated by an international perspective.

In the first place, the Convention provided a forum for exchange of information. International sessions covered such topics as the educational needs of immigrant women in capitalist systems; …

Women's Studies Quarterly

It's been a little more than a year now that I've been reporting on the Association in these columns, a little more than two years since there has been a National Women's Studies Association to report on. When friends and supporters ask, "How is it going?'" I've been forced to give a rather cryptic-seeming reply: "It's going steadily better, so even more is expected; but we hardly have resources to meet the original expectation, so sometimes it feels like it's going worse."

Often the next question from members has been, "When are we going to have the Convention?'" A Convention, …
