Teachers’ Reactions To The Bans And Biblioclasm Of Mexico’S National Free Textbooks In 2023: A Descriptive Qualitative Study, Eric Silberberg, Armida Liliana Patrón Reyes, Pedro Chagoyán García, Eric Manuel Benjamín Sánchez Barragán Jan 2024

Teachers’ Reactions To The Bans And Biblioclasm Of Mexico’S National Free Textbooks In 2023: A Descriptive Qualitative Study, Eric Silberberg, Armida Liliana Patrón Reyes, Pedro Chagoyán García, Eric Manuel Benjamín Sánchez Barragán

Publications and Research

The rollout of Mexico’s new national free textbooks (LTG) at the outset of the 2023-2024 school year sparked a political crisis. Several states sued to prohibit their distribution and segments of civil society protested that they were designed to “indoctrinate” children in leftist ideology and sexual and gender diversity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the bans and controversy on the classrooms of elementary, middle, and telesecundaria teachers. An ethnographic methodology was employed with semi-structured interviews and field notes collected at three schools each in Guanajuato and Puebla. Findings reveal that physical resources are incredibly important to teachers, …

Survivor-Shaped Specters And Gaps, Seo-Young J. Chu Jan 2024

Survivor-Shaped Specters And Gaps, Seo-Young J. Chu

Publications and Research

...survivors are disappearing from academia. Our schools, our syllabi, our classrooms, our bibliographies, our campuses, our research labs, our thesis committees, our libraries, our conference panels, our departments, our programs, and our monographs are riddled through and through with survivor-shaped gaps. Each gap is a place in academia where someone has gone missing due to bullying, harassment, retaliation, predation, sexual assault, mobbing, and/or other abuses of power. Some of these gaps are shaped like allies who have left academia due to moral injury. Not every gap, moreover, is shaped like a survivor. Not every victim survives.

Attention-Language Interface In Multilingual Assessment Instrument For Narratives (Main), Irina A. Sekerina, Olga Parshina, Vladislava Staroverova, Natalia Gagarina

Publications and Research

The current study employed the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (MAIN) to test comprehension of narrative macrostructure in Russian in a visual world eye-tracking paradigm. The four MAIN visual narratives are structurally similar and question referents’ goals and internal states (IS). Previous research revealed that children’s MAIN comprehension differed among the four narratives in German, Swedish, Russian, and Turkish, but it is not clear why. We tested whether the difference in comprehension was (a) present, (b) caused by complicated inferences in understanding IS compared with goals, and (c) ameliorated by orienting visual attention to the referents whose IS was critical …

Whiteness As The Standard: Shifting Ideologies, Race, And Social Context, Kelsey Swift Jan 2024

Whiteness As The Standard: Shifting Ideologies, Race, And Social Context, Kelsey Swift

Publications and Research

In previous work, I have documented and analyzed the persistence of mainstream ideologies around ’standard’ and ’nonstandard’ American English in the adult ESOL classroom and their connection to linguistic racism and anti-Blackness. This study explores how these ideologies developed more broadly, employing elements of raciolinguistic genealogy and metapragmatics to analyze historical language scholarship. I find that while the linguistic features of ‘nonstandard’ English have remained remarkably consistent in the popular imagination, they became increasingly linked with Blackness, especially during and after white backlash to the Great Migration (and other cultural and political changes) in the mid-20th century. I argue that …

Investigating Efficiency Of Free-For-All Models In A Matchmaking Context, Emil Gensby, Bryan S. Weber, Anders H. Christiansen Jan 2024

Investigating Efficiency Of Free-For-All Models In A Matchmaking Context, Emil Gensby, Bryan S. Weber, Anders H. Christiansen

Publications and Research

We explore several popular (and unpopular) systems for matchmaking and ranking in free-for-all (FFA) environments. The commonplace existing methods involve the reinterpretation of established two-player ranking systems (ie. Elo/Glicko) and decomposing multiplayer games into a set of multiple one-vs-one pairings. This decomposition, while commonplace, is not part of the intended use-case of these two-player ranking systems. We are the first to formally explore this ad-hoc usage and reassuringly find evidence that it converges to correct values. Second, we identify a method that appears to dominate what appears to be the most common publicly used method. At the same time, this …

Punishment And Resources, Mark D. White Jan 2024

Punishment And Resources, Mark D. White

Publications and Research

Philosophers of punishment have paid little attention to resource constraints, which have an undeniable impact on how various approaches to punishment work in the real world. It has fallen on economists, with their central focus on scarcity and opportunity cost, to analyze the resource demands of different philosophies of punishment. However, the utilitarian nature of mainstream economics limits the scope of economic theories of punishment to deterrence, which fits naturally into mathematical economic techniques, as opposed to retributivism, the principled nature of which resists quantification. This chapter explores the resource implications of punishment. It starts by identifying shortcomings of the …

Bulgarian Clitics Are Sensitive To Number Attraction, Tanya Ivanova-Sullivan, Irina A. Sekerina, Sol Lago Jan 2024

Bulgarian Clitics Are Sensitive To Number Attraction, Tanya Ivanova-Sullivan, Irina A. Sekerina, Sol Lago

Publications and Research

Previous research has shown that the computation of subject-verb number agreement can be derailed by the presence of syntactically illicit nouns, a phenomenon called agreement attraction. By contrast, the incidence of agreement attraction with anaphoric dependencies is less clear: Previous work has mostly focused on reflexives and strong pronouns, which sometimes show attraction and other times do not. Meanwhile, research on clitics – a different class of pronominal anaphora – is scarcer. To expand the empirical record, we examined clitic pronouns in an under-researched language, Bulgarian. The results of a large sample eye-tracking study showed clear agreement attraction effects in …

Fascismo Al Bivio: The Arditi Del Popolo And Civil War At The Advent Of Fascist Power, Thomas R. Discepola Jan 2024

Fascismo Al Bivio: The Arditi Del Popolo And Civil War At The Advent Of Fascist Power, Thomas R. Discepola

Dissertations and Theses

Focused on the years immediately following World War I in Italy, the dopoguerra, this thesis revisits the entire period from 1919 to 1922 with special attention given to the largest organized, armed antifascist group, the Arditi del popolo (AdP). It argues that it was the AdP, not the Italian Communist Party (PCI), that preoccupied Prime Minister Ivanoe Bonomi and led the Socialists (PSI) to work with Benito Mussolini and other members of the Fasci di combattimento (FdC), their erstwhile nemeses, in creating a pacification agreement in the summer of 1921.

Analysis Of Energy Savings And Feasibility Of Retrofitting New York City Midrise Multifamily Buildings With Air Source Heat Pump Technology, Samuel Chussid Jan 2024

Analysis Of Energy Savings And Feasibility Of Retrofitting New York City Midrise Multifamily Buildings With Air Source Heat Pump Technology, Samuel Chussid

Dissertations and Theses

Motivated by reducing impacts of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions, many dense urban cites throughout the United States have set into law ambitions decarbonization policies that will require buildings to replace fossil fuel space and water heating systems with electric powered alternatives. In many cities, especially in the northeast, fossil fuel space and water heating systems are used in a vast majority of buildings and significantly contribute to citywide carbon emissions. In New York City (NYC), it is estimated that over 40 percent of citywide emissions come from space heating and water heating systems that run on fossil …

Liquid-Amine Infused Surfaces For Carbon Capture, Pedro Bertolini Jan 2024

Liquid-Amine Infused Surfaces For Carbon Capture, Pedro Bertolini

Dissertations and Theses

The release and accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere during the burning of fossil fuels is considered the primary contributor to climate change. Efficient and high-capacity technologies that can remove CO2 from (i) point sources (e.g. exhaust streams) and (ii) directly from air (i.e. direct air capture (DAC)) are the key towards reversing the elevated levels of atmospheric CO2.

Here, we study a novel technology (solid with infused reactive liquid (SWIRL)) which integrates liquid infused surfaces in flow-through geometries to form systems that have large interfacial surface areas per unit volume. The chemistry of the surfaces …

Implementation Of Acid/Gas Digestion Approach To Maximize Volatile Fatty Acids Production From Municipal Sludge And A Techno-Economic Feasibility Study, Aykut Sayin

Dissertations and Theses

Acid digestion, which is the first step of two-phase acid/gas anaerobic digestion process, was studied to identify the optimum operating conditions that would maximize the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). Batch and semi-continuous acid digesters were operated using combined primary sludge and waste-activated sludge as the feedstock from New York City (NYC)’s Wards Island water resource recovery facility (WRRF). Operating conditions tested in batch acid digesters for maximizing VFAs production included temperature (35-70°C), inoculum-to-substrate ratio (0.0-0.5 mgVS/mgVS), thickening (3-13%TS), and contact time (0-10 days), while simultaneously inhibition mechanisms on VFAs production were investigated. Once the optimum operating conditions for …

Modulation Of Motor Learning With High-Intensity Transcranial Electric Stimulation, Gavin Hsu Jan 2024

Modulation Of Motor Learning With High-Intensity Transcranial Electric Stimulation, Gavin Hsu

Dissertations and Theses

Research thus far on noninvasive, transcranial electric stimulation have produced mixed results from in vivo human experiments. This work tests the hypothesis that applying higher stimulation intensities would induce intracranial electric fields that more closely match the higher magnitudes used in animal and in vitro studies and subsequently yield more robust effects. As done commonly in the literature, we targeted the motor cortex (M1), specifically in the context of neuroplastic changes taking place during motor learning in healthy adult humans. This work also seeks a better understanding of the neural correlates underlying motor skill learning.

Through multiple large-sample studies, this …

Hyperspectral And Polarimetric Imaging Of The Ocean For The Characterization Of The Surface Effects And Measurement Uncertainties, Mateusz Malinowski Jan 2024

Hyperspectral And Polarimetric Imaging Of The Ocean For The Characterization Of The Surface Effects And Measurement Uncertainties, Mateusz Malinowski

Dissertations and Theses

Ocean and coastal waters are monitored by Ocean Color satellite sensors to determine concentrations of chlorophyll and water properties and identify areas of algal blooms and other events. The light radiance from the ocean is weak in comparison with the sky radiance, which requires very accurate atmospheric correction of the radiance measured at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) on the satellite and heavy validation of the derived water leaving radiance by field measurements from the ships and ocean platforms. For TOA and especially above water radiance the skylight reflected from the ocean surface represents one of the main sources …

Actuator Optimization And Control Of Pediatric Knee Exoskeleton For Community-Based Mobility Assistance: More Lightweight, More Affordable, And More Stable, Sainan Zhang Jan 2024

Actuator Optimization And Control Of Pediatric Knee Exoskeleton For Community-Based Mobility Assistance: More Lightweight, More Affordable, And More Stable, Sainan Zhang

Dissertations and Theses

Lightweight and smart exoskeletons offer the potential to improve mobility in children. State-of-the-art pediatric exoskeletons are typically clinic-based since they are either tethered or portable but cumbersome, and their design is often not optimized across a range of environments and users. Child growth progressively alters key exoskeleton design requirements, yet no prior work investigated actuator optimization to accommodate child growth. Moreover, exoskeletons typically use the torque sensor or spring mechanics as exteroceptive feedback, but these torque sensing methods not only lead to extra cost and mass but also cause a small range of stable controller gains.

To facilitate pediatric exoskeleton …
