Marcia Guttentag: We Will Miss You, Florence Howe
Women's Studies Quarterly
On November 4, 1977, Marcia Guttentag died of a heart attack in a hotel room in Chicago. She was in transit on one of the innumerable assignments that she undertook - evaluating projects, consulting, lecturing. We know the life she led. It was like the one many of us are leading; overcommitted, extended physically beyond the limits of human physiology at 45, she rarely said no to a request.
I knew her only casually, had seen her only once or twice since a memorable weekend at Wesleyan University in the fall of 1972, when she had introduced a group of …

Women's Studies Quarterly
Despite hazards both external and internal, the Women's Studies Program at San Diego State University (SDSU) has now survived eight years, has been strengthened in the process, and has moved in new directions. Designated a "program" in 1970, it is in fact a functioning "department," thanks to two successive supportive deans.
Funded initially by the SDSU Foundation in a period of militant feminism, in 1974 Women's Studies was assimilated into the administrative structure of the College of Arts and Letters. In the California State University system, funding for academic programs is determined almost exclusively by student enrollment. Departmental status for …

FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE
The National Women's Studies Association has been "in business" at the University of Maryland for two months as I write this memo. When it appears, the semester will be almost over, the weather may be better, and I will be preparing to report on my activities as Coordinator at the Spring 1978 meeting of the NWSA Coordinating Council.
The outlines of that report are already taking shape.

Grass Roots Women's Studies: Piedmont, North Carolina, Mollie C. Davis
Women's Studies Quarterly
North Carolina is a state in nervous transition as it moves rapidly from a predominantly rural to an urban character. Its values and its peoples are in cultural conflict and perhaps have been since the end of World War II when agricultural mechanization, industrialization, improved communication, and racial integration effected substantial changes in this vastly diverse state. The old ways are certainly under attack. Stress accompanies rapid change, especially when values clash and traditional patterns of life and land use are dramatically altered.

The Effect Of Anxiety On Direction Of Attention And Short-Term Memory, Charles B. Kreitzberg
The Effect Of Anxiety On Direction Of Attention And Short-Term Memory, Charles B. Kreitzberg
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of anxiety on rehearsal in short-term memory. It was hypothesized that anxiety arousal would result in attentional alternation between task-relevant rehearsal and task-irrelevant personalized thinking. Because attentional focus becomes increasingly unitary at high levels of arousal, it was anticipated that the alternation resulting from anxiety would interfere with rehearsal of task-relevant information in short-term memory.
One hundred-fifty subjects were randomly assigned to a high-stress (testlike) or low-stress (neutral) condition. They were shown to-be- recalled strings consisting of seven consonants of low associability. Following a 1.5 second exposure to a given …

Theatre And Drama And The Nazi Concentration Camps, Alvin Goldfarb
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
“Theatre and Drama and the Nazi Concentration Camps” analyzes the use of the camps in post-war dramatic literature and in post-war theatrical production. In the Introduction, the history and functions of the internment centers in the Third Reich are discussed. A brief history of actual theatrical activities in the concentration camps is also presented. In the first chapter, entitled “Dramas Set Inside the Concentration Camps,” a number of plays whose dramatic actions are set in the Nazi internment centers are analyzed. These include Charlotte Delbo's Qui Rapportera Ces Paroles?, James Schevill's Cathedral of Ice, Rolf Hochhuth's The Deputy …

Modes Of Representation, The Epistemic Subject And Developmental Word Association Phenomena, Ellen M. Gerschitz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study was devised to investigate the developmental syntagmaticparadigmatic word association shift. In syntagmatic associations the stimulus and associative response are of different grammatical form classes and appear to be grammatically continuous, as response may follow stimulus in an utterance (e.g. cat-meows). These are the predominant responses of children before the ages of six to eight. Older children and adults shift to making paradigmatic associations in which stimulus and response are from the same form class and may be substituted for one another in an utterance (e.g. cat-dog). This shift was explained in terms of underlying symbolic mediational processes and …

Evaluation: Perspectives Of Students And Graduates, Christine Bose, John Steiger, Philomina Victorine
Women's Studies Quarterly
Women's studies, now in its second phase, is making its presence felt within institutions, developing a new curriculum, and building a new body of intellectual knowledge. Women's studies' original purpose continues: to change the sexist and other biased values, practices, and structures within and outside traditional educational spheres.
How much change has occurred? Impact within colleges, high schools, and women's centers is easier to judge than effect in other arenas . Outside educational institutions, impact may be observed through two channels: first, the ties which programs explicitly make with community groups; second, students who graduate and choose not to continue …

REPORTS FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE
May 30 to September 1, 1977
At the May 26-29 meeting of the NWSA Coordinating Council in Milwaukee, it was decided that a Steering Committee of six members would be responsible for the day-to-day decisions/operations of the NWSA. The intention was that the Steering Committee would work with the National Coordinator of the NWSA, who would fill one of the six slots. Four Coordinating Council delegates were elected to serve on the Steering Committee until the next Coordinating Council meeting: Elizabeth Baer (Student Caucus), Sherna Gluck (Pacific Southwest/Community delegate), Barbara Hillyer Davis (Treasurer, Women's Studies …

Grass Roots Women's Studies: Kansas City, Missouri, Betty Burnett
Women's Studies Quarterly
Well over one million people live in the Kansas City, Missouri/Kansas City, Kansas, metropolitan area. Kansas City, Missouri, (with echoes of Main Street boosterism) prides itself on being progressive, economically dynamic, democratic, and sophisticated. Lately, it's started singing the "Big City Blues"—crime, poverty, pollution, anomie. Memories of Mrs. Bridge, Evan Connell's wealthy matron who felt useless and incompetent, haunt the Country Club Plaza. But if Mrs. Bridge still lives in Kansas City, and if she can't find anything meaningful to do or any way to open her mind today, she's got her eyes closed.
