Serious Music With Bea Witkin: An Upper West Side Audio Walk, Megan Hattie Stahl
Theses and Dissertations
Serious Music with Bea Witkin is a site-specific audio walk on New York City’s Upper West Side produced by Megan Hattie Stahl. This immersive, musical documentary explores and extends the life and work of composer Beatrice Witkin (1916-1990). Across four stationary chapters and three walking interludes, participants follow a one-mile route from Riverside Park to Straus Park by way of Witkin’s longtime residence on West End Avenue. Through guided narration, archival music, interviews and recordings of contemporary musicians sight-reading a 1985 string quartet piece by Witkin, Serious Music invites listeners to consider where music begins and ends.
Witkin, who graduated …

Activism Within The Music And Recorded Sound Archive, Julius Tanner
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the integration of applied ethnomusicology within the recorded sound archive of the New York Public Library. The process of repatriating recorded sound through community engagement lead to the development and eventual reparative work of outdated subject headings and other descriptive language within the archive. This thesis also explores how cultural preservation of similar non-physical fields such as naming conventions within linguistics and the development of gastronationalism combats globalization and ultimately colonization.
Structures Of Feeling: Zoe Leonard And The Photographic Archive, Anika Zempleni

Free Fall, Mariam Bolkvadze
Free Fall, Mariam Bolkvadze
Theses and Dissertations
Free Fall, a mixed media project, addresses the horrifying cases of infant abduction experienced in the country of Georgia over the last 40-50 years, and how the nation's systemic issue became one of the causes of illegal child trafficking in the country. The project features an infant room setting with video projections, TV screens with interviews, and custom sound effects. The setting of Free Fall is a visual metaphor of the experiences of those affected by the abductions and illegal child trafficking drawing from the iconography of early childhood. Ultimately, my installation seeks to advocate for justice and support …

‘Keeping It Real’ Goes Wrong: Deconstruction Of Masculinity In The Work Of Jay-Z And Kendrick Lamar, Leo Mcmahon
‘Keeping It Real’ Goes Wrong: Deconstruction Of Masculinity In The Work Of Jay-Z And Kendrick Lamar, Leo Mcmahon
Theses and Dissertations
Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar use their latest albums, 4:44 and Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, to address the wake of damage their behaviors have caused. On a personal level each artist apologizes to their wife for infidelities, but along the way they deconstruct performances of masculinity that have dominated popular hip-hop music since the late 1980's. Highlighting the pressure the music industry puts on hip-hop artists to perform a hyper-sexual, hyper-violent masculinity, I argue that the artists join the genre of African-American autobiography to reveal the inauthentic performances of 'realness' in hip-hop. Posturing as representatives of African-American men, …

This thesis explores how literature and music, including titles by Yuri Herrera, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Los Tigres del Norte, reflect evolving Latinx identities amidst socio-political pressures. It emphasizes self-awareness as a tool for change, portraying Latinx identity as dynamic, shaped by history, and continuously negotiated in resistance to marginalization.
Dear Cheri, Chenhao Chang
Dear Cheri, Chenhao Chang
Theses and Dissertations
Dear Cheri is a 43-minute essay diary film that follows my journey toward reconciliation and reconnection after a period of self-imposed isolation from loved ones. The story unfolds as I search for people named Cheri—the same name as the writer of three valentines I stumbled upon in a thrift store. These valentines, written by Cheri in the 1970s and addressed to her parents, hold a deep resonance for me, mirroring my own feelings of isolation as a foreigner in a foreign land and evoking themes of separation and loss. In an attempt to confront these haunting emotions, I embark on …
Body Of Work: Wax As Medium In Art And Science In Enlightenment Bologna, Kristen Pou
Body Of Work: Wax As Medium In Art And Science In Enlightenment Bologna, Kristen Pou
Theses and Dissertations
Eighteenth-century Bologna is well known for its body of accurate and precise wax anatomical models. However, wax was also used for non-scientific purposes: for portraiture and religious artworks. This paper sets forth an argument to explain the scholarly neglect of enlightenment Bolognese waxworks that did not depict anatomized human bodies.
Optimizing Biofilm Assay Reproducibility And Characterizing The 12-Hydroxystearic Acid On Escherichia Coli, Khilola Khusanova
Optimizing Biofilm Assay Reproducibility And Characterizing The 12-Hydroxystearic Acid On Escherichia Coli, Khilola Khusanova
Theses and Dissertations
Biofilm formation in Escherichia coli plays a critical role in microbial chemical communication and surface-associated persistence. This study investigates the antibiofilm activity of 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA), evaluating its R and S enantiomers as well as a racemic mixture. E. coli BL21, biofilms were grown under standardized laboratory conditions and quantified using the Crystal Violet staining assay. Treatment with 12-HSA resulted in a measurable reduction in biofilm biomass, with differences observed between the individual enantiomers and the mixture. These findings suggest that 12-HSA influences early adhesion and biofilm development, supporting its potential as a small-molecule modulator of bacterial surface behavior. This …

This project seeks to help students apply philosophical questions about the ethics of technology and artificial intelligence to contemporary debates about AI’s impact on society and students’ own lives. It includes a set of in-class active learning exercises and reflection assignments, along with instructions for moderating class discussion of these topics. This is designed to pair with three units in a course on the ethics of technology: privacy, consent, and algorithmic fairness. Each exercise aims to help students connect the philosophical theories studied in class to their own lived experiences with technology.
Politicize The Workplace, Benjamin E. Douglas
Politicize The Workplace, Benjamin E. Douglas
City University of New York Law Review
The United States has long been exceptional among liberal states in both its lack of workers’ rights and the undemocratic character of its electoral politics. In this Article, I argue that these two phenomena are related: the power that business managers and owners have over their employees has a depoliticizing, anti-democratic effect. It discourages people with a boss—that is, most working-age people—from speaking their mind, while also preventing them from banding together for mutual benefit and the realization of shared values.
I begin by discussing the United States’ democracy deficit, as illustrated in low voter turnout and the weakness of …
Lowering The Barrier For Reading Primary Literature In Stem, Sebastian G. Alvarado, Maral Tajerian
Lowering The Barrier For Reading Primary Literature In Stem, Sebastian G. Alvarado, Maral Tajerian
Open Educational Resources
Building Bridges of Knowledge (BBK) is a cross‑CUNY initiative that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and open educational resources to lower the barrier to primary literature and enhance research‑focused pedagogy. Recognizing that scientific papers are often dense and inaccessible to newcomers, we developed a suite of AI‑assisted instructional materials and activities to help students interpret complex data and methodology. A central component is the use of large language models (LLMs) and tools such as Scite.ai to provide citation‑context analytics and personalized research support. These tools allow students to filter literature by supportive, neutral, or contrasting citation statements and to troubleshoot laboratory …

Vaccines And Publics: A Variety Of Engagement Experiences, David H. Lee
Publications and Research
This chapter is about some of the sites and scenes where members of the public are exposed to (and engage in) vaccination discourse. To preview, after a brief introduction, we begin with messaging models of communication, followed by the move from messaging to engagement. Next, case examples of public engagement with vaccines are introduced, from pandemic influenza preparedness in the U.S., to polio eradication initiatives in India, and then to COVID-19 public engagement events in England. Settings of public engagement are noted, including online, in churches and museums. Then, there’s a section about communication and public participation, seen as either …

Adaptation For Whom? Understanding The Impacts Of Dyke Policies On Small-Scale Farmers In Ca Mau Province Of Vietnam, Nguyen Minh Quang, Nguyen Van Minh, Nguyen Vo Chau Ngan, Martha B. Lerski
Publications and Research
Low-lying deltas worldwide are extremely vulnerable to sea-level rise. As the risks of climate-induced flooding become increasingly clear, the thirst for infrastructure-driven adaptation increases. This highlights a patent need to understand the impacts of engineering adaptation solutions, especially those targeting built structures such as dykes and sluices, on farmers from a bottom-up, farmer-centred perspective. The study addresses this call by examining cases where dyke policies, while successful in some dimensions, have undermined small-scale farmer livelihoods in Ca Mau ― Vietnam’s southernmost rural province. It identifies areas in need of attention and adds empirical data related to this group of farmers. …
Chatbot Assessment: Best Practices For Artificial Intelligence In The Library, Michelle Ehrenpreis, John P. Delooper
Chatbot Assessment: Best Practices For Artificial Intelligence In The Library, Michelle Ehrenpreis, John P. Delooper
Publications and Research
In November 2019, the Leonard Lief Library implemented Ivy.ai, a proprietary chatbot on its website. This implementation was the first academic library installation of a vendor-supplied chatbot to be discussed in the professional literature. This chatbot functioned as a new tool that assisted users seeking information from the library website. User questions provided insight to the authors about the kinds of topics students searched for via the library website. In April 2023, the chatbot’s vendor began using OpenAI’s ChatGPT Application Programming Interface (API) to improve the chatbot’s functionality. This change, from a rules-based chatbot system to a transformer model, enhanced …
