Reducing Price Fluctuation In Continuous Double Auctions Through Pricing Policy And Shout Improvement, Jinzhong Niu, Kai Cai, Simon Parsons, Elizabeth Sklar

Publications and Research

Auction mechanism design is a subfield of game theory dedicated to manipulating the rules of an auction so as to achieve specific goals. The complexity of the dynamics of auctions, especially continuous double auctions, makes it difficult to apply the usual analytic game-theoretic methods. This paper takes an experimental approach, searching a parameterized space of possible auction types, and presents a new pricing policy for continuous double auctions. The paper further demonstrates how this policy, together with a shout improvement rule, helps to reduce the fluctuation of transaction prices in auctions involving agents with minimum intelligence while keeping the overall …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Censored Medical Cost Data, Onur Baser, Joseph C. Gardiner, Cathy J. Bradley, Huseyin Yuce, Charles Given May 2006

Longitudinal Analysis Of Censored Medical Cost Data, Onur Baser, Joseph C. Gardiner, Cathy J. Bradley, Huseyin Yuce, Charles Given

Publications and Research

This paper applies the inverse probability weighted (IPW) least-squares method to estimate the effects of treatment on total medical cost, subject to censoring, in a panel-data setting. IPW pooled ordinary-least squares (POLS) and IPW random effects (RE) models are used. Because total medical cost might not be independent of survival time under administrative censoring, unweighted POLS and RE cannot be used with censored data, to assess the effects of certain explanatory variables. Even under the violation of this independency, IPW estimation gives consistent asymptotic normal coefficients with easily computable standard errors. A traditional and robust form of the Hausman test …

A Remark On Conservative Diffeomorphisms, Jairo Bochi, Bassam R. Fayad, Enrique Pujals

Publications and Research

Abstract:

We show that a stably ergodic diffeomorphism can be C1 approximated by a diffeomorphism having stably non-zero Lyapunov exponents.

Résumé:

On montre qu'un difféomorphisme stablement ergodique peut être C1 approché par un difféomorphisme ayant des exposants de Lyapunov stablement non-nuls.

Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu Apr 2006

Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

Polyrhythmic dance compositions from West Africa typically feature an ostinato bell pattern known as a time line. Timbrally distinct, asymmetrical in structure, and aurally prominent, time lines have drawn comment from scholars as keys to understanding African rhythm. This article focuses on the best known and most widely distributed of these, the so-called standard pattern, a seven-stroke figure spanning twelve eighth notes and disposed durationally as <2212221>. Observations about structure (including its internal dynamic, metrical potential, and rotational properties) are juxtaposed with a putative African-cultural understanding (inferred from the firm place of dance in the culture, patterns of verbal discourse, …

Reports and Publications from John Jay College

Associate Degree Report:

John Jay’s decision to admit associate degree students to its criminal justice programs is a reflection of its commitment to the dual mission of providing excellence in education and educational access. As John Jay enters its fifth decade, the College community is engaging in a frank and open discussion about its associate degree programs and whether current offerings best serve John Jay students, New York City, and the criminal justice community. The goal of this document is to provide the College community with the background information necessary to examine these concerns.
