The Influence Of Positive Affect And Anxiety On Attention And Creativity, Rafal Skiba

Dissertations and Theses

The study examined naturally occurring effects of positive affect and anxiety (exam stress at different points in the semester) on attentional performance and creative abilities of undergraduate students. The mood of participants was measured by PANAS and STAI questionnaires. Their attention was tested on the Eriksen Flanker Task, and creativity on the Remote Associates Test (RAT) and Compound Word Problems (CWP). One of the main goals of this study was to verify the prediction based on the Broaden and Build theory of positive resources by Fredrickson (2001). Although the mood manipulation used in this study, that is, placing both testing …

Studies On Sucralose-Based Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Malick Samateh Jan 2012

Studies On Sucralose-Based Low Molecular Weight Gelators, Malick Samateh

Dissertations and Theses

Amphiphiles are molecules with both hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail groups. Examples of amphiphiles include surfactants, detergents, soaps, bile acids/salts and lipids. Due to their amphiphilic nature, they tend to self-assemble in solution via non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen-bonding, π-π stacking and donor–acceptor interactions to form hierarchical morphologies like micelles, lamellae and fibers. The ones capable of subsequently forming gels are known as low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs). LMWGs usually form “polymer-like” fibers that interact to form a three-dimentional network known as a Self-Assembled Fibrillar Network (SAFIN), which entraps and immobilizes the entire solvent pool to form a viscoeslatic material …

Effects Of Arsenic And Uvb Radiation On Induction Of Cyclin D1 In Human Keratinocytes., Julian Gonzalez Jan 2012

Effects Of Arsenic And Uvb Radiation On Induction Of Cyclin D1 In Human Keratinocytes., Julian Gonzalez

Dissertations and Theses

Arsenic and Ultraviolet radiation B (UVB) are environmental toxins that have been linked to various epithelial cancers. Arsenic metabolism in humans leads to its collection in the skin, where it encounters and can act with known carcinogen UVB. Epidemiological evidence of the two toxins demonstrates their potential to affect signaling pathways, with various consequences. Here we employ an in vitro model system using Normal Human Epidermal Keratinocytes (NHEK) to identify the effect of arsenic and UVB on humans and whether they work synergistically. We find that although both cause induction of cyclin D1, culturing cells with both co-mutagens does not …

Multimedia Content-Based Indexing And Recognition In Digital Libraries, Steven Medina

Dissertations and Theses

"Recognition of digital media is more prevalent in today’s computer culture than ever before. The advent of low cost storage has created a seemingly infinite amount of metadata on the internet, as well as on local machines throughout the world. It is more important than ever to have the capability of quickly and accurately filtering this metadata to find a desired result. Data can be searched using various criteria. For example, text data is searched by analyzing the contents of the text itself. One might execute a search using a method as simple as looking for the ASCII file name, …

Equilibrium Conditions Of Hydrate-Forming Pickering Emulsions, Radha Ambekar Jan 2012

Equilibrium Conditions Of Hydrate-Forming Pickering Emulsions, Radha Ambekar

Dissertations and Theses

A key factor in hydrate risk management for an oil-governing system is the stability of the emulsified water with gas hydrate formation. The kinetics of formation of cyclopentane hydrates is investigated in a water-in-oil emulsion using differential scanning calorimetry with the effect of surfactant Span 80. In a classical DSC experiment, an emulsion sample is subjected to a regular cooling and heating cycle between temperatures that include freezing and melting of the dispersed droplets. New phase equilibrium data of (cyclopentane hydrate + water 60:40) emulsions, in the concentration range from 0.1 to 2% of Span 80, is determined at atmospheric …

Study Of Air Bubble Injection Into Laminar And Turbulent Water Flow Through An Annular Test Section, Debbrata Das

Dissertations and Theses

Injection of bubbles into a vertical upward flow of water in an annular flow channel was studied experimentally under laminar and turbulent conditions. In order to measure the size and shape of the bubbles, a flow visualization system was set up in a vertical test section with a high speed video camera. A PIV measurement technique was also used to determine laminar and turbulent velocity profiles in the liquid stream. In this study, an efficient image processing methodology was used to obtain the velocity profiles, bubble size, shapes and trajectory at different Reynolds numbers. The measured velocity profiles matched theoretical …

Feasibility Analysis Of Estrification Systems With Entrainers, Kang Wook Lee Jan 2012

Feasibility Analysis Of Estrification Systems With Entrainers, Kang Wook Lee

Dissertations and Theses

(Ethyl Acetate) and IPA (Isopropyl Acetate) production systems are studied in terms of the feasibility analysis. It is not feasible to retrieve pure products by a simple reactive distillation for IPA production system because CCR (Critical Composition Region) covers the entire desired binary edge for IPA system. On the other hand, even though CCR does not cover the entire desired binary edge of the EA system completely, internal reflux ratio (IRR) analysis does not allow the production of the pure product via reactive distillation for EA production system. To overcome the restraints, external entrainers are utilized to take advantage of …

Diffuse Optical Imaging Using Decomposition Methods, Binlin Wu, M. Alrubaiee, W. Cai, M. Xu, S. K. Gayen

Publications and Research

Diffuse optical imaging (DOI) for detecting and locating targets in a highly scattering turbid medium is treated as a blind source separation (BSS) problem. Three matrix decomposition methods, independent component analysis (ICA), principal component analysis (PCA), and nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) were used to study the DOI problem. The efficacy of resulting approaches was evaluated and compared using simulated and experimental data. Samples used in the experiments included Intralipid-10% or Intralipid-20% suspension in water as the medium with absorptive or scattering targets embedded.

Fluids, Anomalies And The Chiral Magnetic Effect: A Group-Theoretic Formulation, V. Parameswaran Nair, Rashmi Ray, Shubho Roy Jan 2012

Fluids, Anomalies And The Chiral Magnetic Effect: A Group-Theoretic Formulation, V. Parameswaran Nair, Rashmi Ray, Shubho Roy

Publications and Research

It is possible to formulate fluid dynamics in terms of group-valued variables. This is particularly suited to the cases where the fluid has nonabelian charges and is coupled to nonabelian gauge fields. We explore this formulation further in this paper. An action for a fluid of relativistic particles (with and without spin) is given in terms of the Lorentz and Poincare (or de Sitter) groups. Considering the case of particles with flavor symmetries, a general fluid action which also incorporates all flavor anomalies is given. The chiral magnetic and chiral vorticity effects as well as the consequences of the mixed …

Reducibility, Degree Spectra, And Lowness In Algebraic Structures, Rebecca M. Steiner Jan 2012

Reducibility, Degree Spectra, And Lowness In Algebraic Structures, Rebecca M. Steiner

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation addresses questions in computable structure theory, which is a branch of mathematical logic hybridizing computability theory and the study of familiar mathematical structures. We focus on algebraic structures, which are standard topics of discussion among model theorists. The structures examined here are fields, graphs, trees under a predecessor function, and Boolean algebras.

For a computable field F, the splitting set SF of F is the set of polynomials in F[X] which factor over F, and the root set RF of F is the set of polynomials in F[X] which have a root in F …

Aperture Array Photonic Metamaterials: Theoretical Approaches, Numerical Techniques And A Novel Application, Eli Lansey Jan 2012

Aperture Array Photonic Metamaterials: Theoretical Approaches, Numerical Techniques And A Novel Application, Eli Lansey

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Optical or photonic metamaterials that operate in the infrared and visible frequency regimes show tremendous promise for solving problems in renewable energy, infrared imaging, and telecommunications. However, many of the theoretical and simulation techniques used at lower frequencies are not applicable to this higher-frequency regime. Furthermore, technological and financial limitations of photonic metamaterial fabrication increases the importance of reliable theoretical models and computational techniques for predicting the optical response of photonic metamaterials.

This thesis focuses on aperture array metamaterials. That is, a rectangular, circular, or other shaped cavity or hole embedded in, or penetrating through a metal film. The research …

Optomechanics Of Cavity Driven Nanoparticles, Joel T. Rubin Jan 2012

Optomechanics Of Cavity Driven Nanoparticles, Joel T. Rubin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The subject of this thesis is the opto-mechanical interaction of a spherical high-Q microresonator and a subwavelength particle, which, at optical wavelengths, corresponds to a size on the order of nanometers. After a review of the basic theory of spherical resonators and multi-sphere scattering, the full self-consistent electromagnetic field of the coupled resonator-particle system is derived. The particle-induced frequency shift and broadening is calculated by examining the poles of the scattering coefficients of the resonator. The force exerted on the particle by the field is determined via the Maxwell stress tensor, and is found to be in general non-conservative. From …

Quantum Tunneling Of The Magnetic Moment In A Free Nanoparticle, Michael F. O'Keeffe, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Dmitry A. Garanin Jan 2012

Quantum Tunneling Of The Magnetic Moment In A Free Nanoparticle, Michael F. O'Keeffe, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Dmitry A. Garanin

Publications and Research

We study tunneling of the magnetic moment in a particle that has full rotational freedom. Exact energy levels are obtained and the ground-state magnetic moment is computed for a symmetric rotor. The effect of the mechanical freedom on spin tunneling manifests itself in a strong dependence of the magnetic moment on the moments of inertia of the rotor. Energy of the particle exhibits quantum phase transitions between states with different values of the magnetic moment. Particles of various shapes are investigated and quantum phase diagram is obtained.
