Ecological Correlations Of Dietary Food Intake And Mental Health Disorders, Jordan Hoerr, Joshua Fogel, Benjamin Van Voorhees

Publications and Research

This paper examines the ecological association of dietary food intake with mental health outcomes on the group level across countries. Published data from the World Mental Health Survey were used to compare lifetime prevalence of four categories of mental health disorders (anxiety disorders, mood disorders, impulse control disorders, and substance use disorders) with a country’s fish/seafood and sugar/sweetener supply quantity using the Spearman rank correlation. Data were compared for 17 countries across the world. Sugar and sweetener supply quantity was significantly and positively associated with anxiety disorders (rho = 0.75, p = 0.001), mood disorders (rho = 0.75, p = …

Structural Brain Correlates Associated With Professional Handball Playing, Jürgen Hänggi, Nicolas Langer, Kai Lutz, Karin Birrer, Susan Mérillat, Lutz Jäncke

Publications and Research

Background There is no doubt that good bimanual performance is very important for skilled handball playing. The control of the non-dominant hand is especially demanding since efficient catching and throwing needs both hands. Methodology/Hypotheses We investigated training-induced structural neuroplasticity in professional handball players using several structural neuroimaging techniques and analytic approaches and also provide a review of the literature about sport-induced structural neuroplastic alterations. Structural brain adaptations were expected in regions relevant for motor and somatosensory processing such as the grey matter (GM) of the primary/secondary motor (MI/supplementary motor area, SMA) and somatosensory cortex (SI/SII), basal ganglia, thalamus, and cerebellum …

The Effects Of Morning Versus Evening Stretching Exercises In Hamstrings Flexibility Gains, Camron Einerman, Emily Eleff, Ana Ilijeska, Aliza Zinberg Jun 2014

The Effects Of Morning Versus Evening Stretching Exercises In Hamstrings Flexibility Gains, Camron Einerman, Emily Eleff, Ana Ilijeska, Aliza Zinberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Many human physiological functions, including muscle flexibility, exhibit a pattern over a 24-hour period, known as circadian rhythm. Muscle flexibility and its circadian rhythm have been researched, though much more information is needed, especially regarding the hamstring muscle group. The object of this study was to determine if stretching at different times of the day results in differences in hamstring flexibility. Since muscles and joints are most flexible at night, greater ranges of motion should be available, allowing for a greater degree of stretching to take place. We hypothesize that when utilizing the optimal type, duration, and frequency of stretch, …

Towards Structural Systems Pharmacology To Study Complex Diseases And Personalized Medicine, Lei Xie, Xiaoxia Ge, Hepan Tan, Li Xie, Yinliang Zhang, Thomas Hart, Xiaowei Yang, Philip E. Bourne

Publications and Research

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), whole genome sequencing, and high-throughput omics techniques have generated vast amounts of genotypic and molecular phenotypic data. However, these data have not yet been fully explored to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of drug discovery, which continues along a one-drug-one-target-one-disease paradigm. As a partial consequence, both the cost to launch a new drug and the attrition rate are increasing. Systems pharmacology and pharmacogenomics are emerging to exploit the available data and potentially reverse this trend, but, as we argue here, more is needed. To understand the impact of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors on drug action, …

Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics As A Simulation-Based Design Guide In A Microfluidic 3d Living Cell Array (3d Lca) Device, A.H. Rezwanuddin Ahmed Jan 2013

Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics As A Simulation-Based Design Guide In A Microfluidic 3d Living Cell Array (3d Lca) Device, A.H. Rezwanuddin Ahmed

Dissertations and Theses

The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a tool in the aerodynamics and oil industry provides a reinforcement to efficiency in the design of aircrafts or for understanding the flow through pipes. A similar approach can be taken towards microfluidics, where traditionally devices have been designed based on experience or physiological replication, and a CFD simulation is shown post-manufacture to show the flow and diffusion patterns present. In this study, a reverse approach is suggested, by designing the device first in CFD and perform simulations on variations of alterable parameters to get insight on how the changing parameters affect …

A New Body Shape Index Predicts Mortality Hazard Independently Of Body Mass Index, Nir Y. Krakauer, Jesse C. Krakauer Jul 2012

A New Body Shape Index Predicts Mortality Hazard Independently Of Body Mass Index, Nir Y. Krakauer, Jesse C. Krakauer

Publications and Research

Background Obesity, typically quantified in terms of Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding threshold values, is considered a leading cause of premature death worldwide. For given body size (BMI), it is recognized that risk is also affected by body shape, particularly as a marker of abdominal fat deposits. Waist circumference (WC) is used as a risk indicator supplementary to BMI, but the high correlation of WC with BMI makes it hard to isolate the added value of WC. Methods and Findings We considered a USA population sample of 14,105 non-pregnant adults () from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) …

Mechanisms For Sweetness123, John D. Fernstrom, Steven D. Munger, Anthony Sclafani, Ivan E. De Araujo, Ashley Roberts, Samuel Molinary

Publications and Research

A remarkable amount of information has emerged in the past decade regarding sweet taste physiology. This article reviews these data, with a particular focus on the elucidation of the sweet taste receptor, its location and actions in taste transduction in the mouth, its nontaste functions in the gastrointestinal tract (e.g., in enteroendocrine cells), and the brain circuitry involved in the sensory processing of sweet taste. Complications in the use of rodents to model human sweet taste perception and responses are also considered. In addition, information relating to low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) is discussed in the context of these issues. Particular consideration …

Fine Particulate Matter Constituents Associated With Cardiovascular Hospitalizations And Mortality In New York City, Kazuhiko Ito, Robert Mathes, Zev Ross, Arthur Nádas, George Thurston, Thomas Matte Apr 2011

Fine Particulate Matter Constituents Associated With Cardiovascular Hospitalizations And Mortality In New York City, Kazuhiko Ito, Robert Mathes, Zev Ross, Arthur Nádas, George Thurston, Thomas Matte

Publications and Research

Background Recent time-series studies have indicated that both cardiovascular disease (CVD)mortality and hospitalizations are associated with particulate matter (PM). However, seasonal patterns of PM associations with these outcomes are not consistent, and PM components responsible for these associations have not been determined. We investigated this issue in New York City (NYC), where PM originates from regional and local combustion sources. Objective In this study, we examined the role of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and its key chemical components on both CVD hospitalizations and on mortality in NYC. Methods We analyzed daily deaths and emergency hospitalizations …

Direct Intra-Tumoral Injection Of Zinc-Acetate Halts Tumor Growth In A Xenograft Model Of Prostate Cancer, Maulik R. Shah, Christopher L. Kriedt, Nathan H. Lents, Mary K. Hoyer, Nimah Jamaluddin, Claudette Klein, Joseph Baldassare Jun 2009

Direct Intra-Tumoral Injection Of Zinc-Acetate Halts Tumor Growth In A Xenograft Model Of Prostate Cancer, Maulik R. Shah, Christopher L. Kriedt, Nathan H. Lents, Mary K. Hoyer, Nimah Jamaluddin, Claudette Klein, Joseph Baldassare

Publications and Research

Intracellular levels of zinc have shown a strong inverse correlation to growth and malignancy of prostate cancer. To date, studies of zinc supplementation in prostate cancer have been equivocal and have not accounted for bioavailability of zinc. Therefore, we hypothesized that direct intra-tumoral injection of zinc could impact prostate cancer growth. In this study, we evaluated the cytotoxic properties of the pH neutral salt zinc acetate on the prostate cancer cell lines PC3, DU145 and LNCaP. Zinc acetate killed prostate cancer cell lines in vitro, independent of androgen sensitivity, in a dose-dependent manner in a range between 200 and 600 …

Statistical Dynamics Of Flowing Red Blood Cells By Morphological Image Processing, John M. Higgins, David T. Eddington, Sangeeta N. Bhatia, L. Mahadevan

Publications and Research

Blood is a dense suspension of soft non-Brownian cells of unique importance. Physiological blood flow involves complex interactions of blood cells with each other and with the environment due to the combined effects of varying cell concentration, cell morphology, cell rheology, and confinement. We analyze these interactions using computational morphological image analysis and machine learning algorithms to quantify the non-equilibrium fluctuations of cellular velocities in a minimal, quasi-two-dimensional microfluidic setting that enables high-resolution spatio-temporal measurements of blood cell flow. In particular, we measure the effective hydrodynamic diffusivity of blood cells and analyze its relationship to macroscopic properties such as bulk …

Marcia Guttentag: We Will Miss You, Florence Howe Apr 1978

Marcia Guttentag: We Will Miss You, Florence Howe

Women's Studies Quarterly

On November 4, 1977, Marcia Guttentag died of a heart attack in a hotel room in Chicago. She was in transit on one of the innumerable assignments that she undertook - evaluating projects, consulting, lecturing. We know the life she led. It was like the one many of us are leading; overcommitted, extended physically beyond the limits of human physiology at 45, she rarely said no to a request.

I knew her only casually, had seen her only once or twice since a memorable weekend at Wesleyan University in the fall of 1972, when she had introduced a group of …

Closeup: Women's Studies Department At San Diego, Marilyn J. Boxer

Women's Studies Quarterly

Despite hazards both external and internal, the Women's Studies Program at San Diego State University (SDSU) has now survived eight years, has been strengthened in the process, and has moved in new directions. Designated a "program" in 1970, it is in fact a functioning "department," thanks to two successive supportive deans.

Funded initially by the SDSU Foundation in a period of militant feminism, in 1974 Women's Studies was assimilated into the administrative structure of the College of Arts and Letters. In the California State University system, funding for academic programs is determined almost exclusively by student enrollment. Departmental status for …
