Engaging The Eighties: Ethics, Objects, Periods, Kevin L. Ferguson
Engaging The Eighties: Ethics, Objects, Periods, Kevin L. Ferguson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines a recent decade in American history whose unique notion of self-periodization generated important questions of ethical engagement and withdrawal. Situated during a time of an increasingly complex relationship between literature and theory, thinkers in the 80s self-consciously shifted towards making claims about their present moment which were based on the logic of rupture, and which thus created an either-or logic of pessimism or optimism in response to this rupture. These kinds of self-periodizing notions generally are collected under the rubric "postmodernism" and the first chapter deals with a transatlantic movement between theorists such as Fredric Jameson and …

Larry Rivers And Frank O'Hara: Reframing Male Sexualities, Dong-Yeon Koh
Larry Rivers And Frank O'Hara: Reframing Male Sexualities, Dong-Yeon Koh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1970, Sam Hunter complained that the distinctive persona of proto-Pop artist Larry Rivers had overshadowed his artistic achievement. "Too often he has been taken as an engaging public performer", wrote Hunter, claiming that some critics "make the mistake of confusing his irrepressible exhibitionism with an imagined artistic flaw of fitful or unsteady inspiration". 1 This dissertation presents an alternative proposition regarding the relationship between Rivers' artistic persona and art: that an examination of Rivers' numerous activities inside and outside the artistic arena, such as poetry, jazz, and media, is indeed useful for understanding his work. Particularly, Rivers' involvement with …
Rousseau's Gift To Geneva, Helena Rosenblatt
Rousseau's Gift To Geneva, Helena Rosenblatt
Publications and Research
People often seem to forget that Rousseau dedicated his Second Discourse to “The Republic of Geneva.” This is a shame because, in doing so, they miss precious clues not only about the meaning of the Discourse itself, but also about its place in Rousseau’s political thought as a whole.
It is no accident that Rousseau dedicated the Discourse on Inequality, his most radical work of all, to his hometown of Geneva; but it requires some research into the historical context to understand why. In Geneva a patrician ruling elite was using social contract theory to subvert the democratic principles …

Two Liberals On Religion: Constant And Tocqueville Compared, Helena Rosenblatt
Two Liberals On Religion: Constant And Tocqueville Compared, Helena Rosenblatt
Publications and Research
As founding fathers of modern liberalism, Benjamin Constant and Alexis de Tocqueville shared a common sensibility as well as a number of key concerns. Of central importance to both men was the need to protect individual rights and freedoms against what they saw as an encroaching social power. Having learned the lessons of the French Revolution, they knew that power, whether concentrated in the hands of one man, or executed in the name of the "people", was a dangerous thing. Thus they worked throughout their lives to establish and defend a representative system with constitutional guarantees that would protect fundamental …
Why Constant? A Critical Overview Of The Constant Revival, Helena Rosenblatt
Why Constant? A Critical Overview Of The Constant Revival, Helena Rosenblatt
Publications and Research
Recent years have seen a remarkable renewal of interest in the thought of Benjamin Constant (1767–1830). For long recognized as the author of the literary masterpiece Adolphe, Constant is now receiving increasing attention for his political writings. Paperback editions of his major works are presently available in both French and English, helping to establish his growing reputation as a founding father of modern liberalism. Constant's stature as a seminal liberal thinker has benefited from the recent climate of opinion in the Western world and, in particular, from the return to fashion of liberalism as a social and political doctrine. …

Would Brown Make It To New York City? The First Phase Of The Battle For School Integration, 1954-1957, Kristopher B. Burrell
Publications and Research
This conference paper looks at the struggle to desegregate New York's City's public schools in the immediate aftermath of the Brown v Board of Education decision in 1954. For the first three years following the Supreme Court decision, the New York City Board of Education make public overtures toward fulfilling the letter and spirit of Brown in New York, but in practice the Board of Education engaged in stalling and half-measures that succeeded in effectively stopping widespread school desegregation in the city.
On Thanksgiving And Collective Memory: Constructing The American Tradition, Amy Adamczyk
On Thanksgiving And Collective Memory: Constructing The American Tradition, Amy Adamczyk
Publications and Research
Relying on the approach by Maurice Halbwachs who argued that collective memory is based on contemporary interests and concerns, this article shows how Thanksgiving has changed over time in accordance with the ideas of the day. Aspects of the analysis support Barry Schwartz’s theory that commemoration reflects the historical past. Similar to the pilgrims’ celebration, many people commemorate Thanksgiving by, for example, feasting and praying. But in contrast to Schwartz’s thought, this paper also shows that there are other elements of traditions that have minimal connection with the original event. Forms of commemoration like the Macy’s Day Parade challenge the …
On The ‘‘Misogyny’’ Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau: The Letter To D’Alembert In Historical Context, Helena Rosenblatt
On The ‘‘Misogyny’’ Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau: The Letter To D’Alembert In Historical Context, Helena Rosenblatt
Publications and Research
Evidence suggests that the feminist consensus on Jean-Jacques Rousseau “misogyny” is breaking down.New studies are emerging that bring to light the many sympathetic portrayals of women in Rousseau’s works and the important role he ascribed to women within the family. Some modern feminists are even finding ways of reading Rousseau that speak to women’s concerns today. Overturning the notion that Rousseau was an arch-misogynist will be an uphill battle, however, given how very widespread it has become. Moreover, before we can arrive at a coherent and convincing appraisal of Rousseau’s views on women, a curious paradox needs to be addressed: …
Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde In Male Homosocial Contexts: The Politicization Of Same-Sex Desire, Richard E. Zeikowitz
Chaucer's Troilus And Criseyde In Male Homosocial Contexts: The Politicization Of Same-Sex Desire, Richard E. Zeikowitz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
I explore the dynamics of homosociality in late medieval culture, investigating both Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and its cultural and political environments. I articulate two conflicting attitudes toward male same-sex relations: one affirming and celebratory, the other homophobic. I conclude that Chaucer's poem both replicates and generates a late medieval sociocultural discourse characterized by tension between normative male same-sex behavior and the potential politicization of such behavior.
In the introductory chapter, I survey important recent historical and feminist criticism of Troilus and Criseyde and situate my project within the current debate regarding definitions of premodern sexuality. In chapter 2, part …

The Tradition Of Autobiography In Music, Antoni Pizà
The Tradition Of Autobiography In Music, Antoni Pizà
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A survey of autobiographical writings by composers from the fourteenth century to the present focusing on the question of how composers create a self. Although, the Autobiography of Thomas Whythorne (1528-96) can be considered the earliest autobiography by a composer, the genre also stems from lexicographical practices in eighteenth-century Germany (scholars such as Walther and Mattheson requested autobiographies from composers with the intention to include them in biographical dictionaries of music). In the nineteenth century, Wagner's autobiographies show the composer's concern with providing a solid image of himself through writing. Stravinsky's Autobiography demonstrates the composer's preoccupation for giving an exegesis …

West German Feminist Book Publishers, Mary Grunwald
West German Feminist Book Publishers, Mary Grunwald
Women's Studies Quarterly
Feminist publishers are the sensation in the German book trade. Fifteen participated in the October 1978 Frankfurt Book Fair—up from five at the previous year's fair; but even five had created a stir in the establishment. The entire phenomenon has sprung up in four years, a measure of the great accomplishment of the women's movement in a society that, compared to that of the United States or England, holds women in open contempt.
Far and away the biggest, most stunningly successful enterprise is the Frauenoffensive Verlag in Munich. Its rise to a snug place among established publishers was aided by …

Women's Studies In India: A Bibliographical Note, The Feminist Press
Women's Studies Quarterly
In two of India's major cities, there are centers for women's studies. Thus far, they are research centers and places where growing library collections allow them to be of use to scholars and to teachers interested in changing their curriculum. Both of these centers would be grateful to U.S. scholars, women's studies centers , publishers, and libraries willing to share their resources and to send copies of books, articles, or pamphlets to India. In the annotations that follow, the address of each center precedes a brief description of its projects and list of its publications, all of which are recommended …

The Berkeley School System: Women's Studies Program In Jeopardy, Susan Groves, Phyllis Koppelman, Lyn Reese
Women's Studies Quarterly
The Women's Studies Program of the Berkeley Unified School District was created in 1972. It all began when pressure was placed on the Berkeley Board of Education in 1970 by the Education Committee of the Berkeley chapter of NOW. The committee, which included University of California women, made a strong case for examining sexism in the schools. The Board responded by creating a Women's Task Force whose purpose it was:
-to study the role of women in the Berkeley Unified School District;
-to bring to the attention of the Board both positive and negative aspects of the District in its …

Women Historians And Women's History: An Organizational Guide, Arnita Jones
Women Historians And Women's History: An Organizational Guide, Arnita Jones
Women's Studies Quarterly
Since the late 1960s an interlocking network of new national, regional and local organizations has furthered the interests of women historians . From the beginning, however, the developing field of women's history has also been a primary concern. The enthusiasm of women historians for women's history has its parallel within other academic disciplines, but the current redefinition of historical inquiry to include such new areas as psycho-history, family history and the history of childhood has provided an unusual opportunity. Perhaps for this reason, perhaps out of frustration about the issue of employment, the history of women has become the major …
