You are cordially invited to participate in the Third Annual NWSA Convention—"Women Respond to Racism"—to be held May 31-June 4, 1981, at the University of Connecticut at Storrs.
At this Convention we will examine the conjunction of racism and sexism from an interdisciplinary, multicultural perspective as well as in the context of, for example, community organtzmg, curriculum development, the media, and public policy. The Convention schedule includes a broad selection of workshops and panel discussions on subjects as diverse as nonracist and nonsexist curricular materials, race and sex desegregation, nineteenth-century Black women activists, organizing against sterilization abuse nationally and internationally, …

Few conventions about education have either much cheer or tenderness. Those of the National Women's Studies Association do. In this, too, NWSA is unusual. One of the many good events at the 1980 Convention at Indiana University in Bloomington was a workshop that Frances Doughty of the National Gay Task Force gave. She used letters, photographs, and other archival remnants to portray a "lesbian friendship group," women who were either friends or lovers for thirty years. The audience touched its past with blissful curiosity. Then Doughty told a story about a famous member of the group: Janet Flanner, the writer. …

FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE
Responding to the 1979 charge of the Finance Committee and the Delegate Assembly, the Coordinating Council devoted a major portion of its February 14-17 meeting in College Park to a discussion of finances. The clear intent of all sessions was the consideration of fiscal responsibility in terms of feminist principles and the goals of NWSA.
On February 13, several members of the 1979-80 Finance Committee (Liz Birch, Alice Stadthaus, Barbara Taylor, Mary Thornberry, and Robin Wright) met with the Steering Committee (Pat Gozemba, Jan Meriwether, and Kay Towns); the National Coordinator, Elaine Reuben; the National Staff …

Emma Willard: Feminist, Anne Firor Scott
Women's Studies Quarterly
Anne Firor Scott gave the Cum Laude Address at the Emma Willard School (originally the Troy Seminary) in May 1978. We have cut the lecture only slightly to fit our space and audience. It is, as she wrote to us, "an example of trying to persuade a group of students to look at the past of their own institution, and learn from it." "I gathered," Scott added, "that the students were expecting some kind of high-minded exhortation, and were pleasantly surprised."

CONSTITUTION OF THE NWSA
Drafted: January 13-16, 1977 at the Founding Convention held at the University of San Francisco.
PREAMBLE
We, the delegates to the first convention of the National Women's Studies Association, have met to found an organization designed to further the social, political, and professional development of women's studies throughout the country, at every educational level and in every educational setting.
Women's studies owes its existence to the movement for the liberation of women; the women's liberation movement exists because women are oppressed. Women's studies, diverse as its components are, has at its best shared a vision of …

Dear Friends, Although she warned severely against "condescension," the writer of the article "reporting" on feminism at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho (Women's Studies Newsletter, Summer 1974) struck me as having enough of that quality and a good deal to spare, when it comes to the state of things there. Just a little swat such as "U.S. 95, the only federally numbered goat trail in the country" struck a pretty sour note, and of course she is not even accurate (unless "county" was intended instead of "country") and certainly conveys no image of the situation in …

Encountering The Male Establishment: Sex-Status Limits On Women's Careers In The Professions, Cynthia Fuchs Epstein
Publications and Research
Despite impressive extensions in the scope of women's social and political rights, there have been few extensions of sex-linked boundaries in the prestigious, male-dominated professions. This paper identifies the processes and structure of the professions in the United States which act to limit women's participation and achievement within them. Because their sex status is defined within the culture of professions as inappropriate, women find that the institutionalized channels of recruitment and advancement, such as the protégé system, are not available to them. Various modes of behavior on the part of women and their colleagues are described which are consequences of …
