Children's Video Usage: A Comparative Study Of Nine To Eleven-Year-Olds Living In London And New York, Seth P. Welins

The goal of this cross-cultural study identifies which video and non-video related activities are selected by nine-to-eleven year old children living in New York and London, England. Four hundred children were surveyed and interviewed about their television and VCR viewing habits and their use of computers and computer/video games as well their after-school, non-video activities.

A uses-gratifications approach provides a general framework for the analyses of the data. These data show that there is a complex interplay between children's activity choices and the occupational status of the child's parents, the child's race/ethnicity, gender, ecological environment, family structure and social structure. …

This study investigated how people affiliated with different parties in an international conflict understand their own actions and the actions of their adversaries. Using data gathered in the Middle East in 1982, the study examined the explanations offered by 1336 Israeli Jews, Palestinians (living in Israel) and Egyptians to three political events in the Middle East: 'Israeli Air Force conducts a raid on Beirut,' 'Palestinians attack a bus on the Haifa-Tel Aviv highway,' and 'A peace treaty is announced between Israel and Egypt.'

In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. Nearly 350 delegates from all parts of India—from Gauhati to Gujarat, from Kashmir to Kerala—attended the five-day National Conference on Women's Studies, held at the S.N.D.T. Women's University in Bombay, April 20-24, 1981. Teachers, researchers, students, voluntary workers, and government personnel were among the participants-including 25 men. In addition, delegates from such neighboring countries as Nepal, Srilanka, and Bangladesh attended, as well as representatives of Unesco, UNICEF, the Ford Foundation, and such Indian organizations as the Indian Council on Social Science Research (ICSSR).

On the first of January, Dr. Elaine Reuben began serving as Coordinator of the National Women's Studies Association, headquartered at the University of Maryland/College Park. As National Coordinator, Reuben is responsible for implementing policies set by the members of NWSA. Once fully established, Reuben's office will collect and distribute information about women's studies programs and curricula, initiate planning for the second NWSA Convention, and facilitate the work of all regions, taskforces, and caucuses within NWSA. Reuben's first priority is to assist the taskforces charged with fund-raising and the membership drive.

This study was devised to investigate the developmental syntagmaticparadigmatic word association shift. In syntagmatic associations the stimulus and associative response are of different grammatical form classes and appear to be grammatically continuous, as response may follow stimulus in an utterance (e.g. cat-meows). These are the predominant responses of children before the ages of six to eight. Older children and adults shift to making paradigmatic associations in which stimulus and response are from the same form class and may be substituted for one another in an utterance (e.g. cat-dog). This shift was explained in terms of underlying symbolic mediational processes and …

The women's studies offerings on college campuses in the Chicago area seem, at first glance, disappointing. the University of Chicago has no courses in this field; neither Northwestern University nor the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle allows an undergraduate major. It's hard to believe that an extended bibliography could be an underground classic, but in a sense this one was until this inexpensive paperback edition came out. Before that it circulated as a two-inch thick mimeographed 8½ x 11 tome. As a reference, this book is invaluable and should be useful to people in many fields—anthropology, sociology, political science, etc.
