Those of you who think keynote speakers are chosen for their knowledge, wisdom, or fame should be disabused of those beliefs, at least in my case. I was asked to give this talk because I ventured an opinion about the subject that should be addressed in this year's keynote address during a meeting of the program committee over a year ago. At that time the American Historical Association's Committee on Women Historians (CWH) was preparing its update of the 1971 Rose Report on the Status of Women in the Historical Profession and the figures gave little reason for optimism either …

Only Your Pen & Page Love You?

No Longer!
The epigraph above over a sketch of an amazon writer rising from her typewriter has graced the bright orange flyers issued by the Feminist Writers' Guild since 1978 when it first came into being. From a group of women in Berkeley, California, then one in New York City, the national sisterhood of feminist writers has grown to a membership of over 1,000.
The 1981 National Steering Committee met May 8-1O in Milwaukee, site of the third largest chapter, to plan new goals and schedule projects which emphasize …

The report on the "First National Conference on Women's Studies in India" in our Spring issue was incorrectly identified as being by Florence Howe. This report was actually an excerpt from the official press release of the Conference, with additiona l material incorporated from notes written by Maithreyi Krishna Raj. Also, we regret that the photograph on page 21 of that issue was improperly cropped.
The Uses Of Anger, Audre Lorde
The Uses Of Anger, Audre Lorde
Women's Studies Quarterly
Racism. The belief in the inherent superiority of one race over all others and thereby the right to dominance, manifest and implied.
Women respond to racism. My response to racism is anger. I have lived with that anger, on that anger, beneath that anger, on top of that anger, ignoring that anger, feeding upon that anger, learning to use that anger before it laid my visions to waste, for most of my life. Once I did it in silence, afraid of the weight of that anger. My fear of that anger taught me nothing. Your fear of that …

Toward Sex Equity In The Philadelphia School System, Barbara A. Mitchell
Toward Sex Equity In The Philadelphia School System, Barbara A. Mitchell
Women's Studies Quarterly
The following is a revised and edited version of a talk delivered on the Capitol Campus of Pennsylvania State University in the fall of 1980.
One of the best kept secrets in American education is that Philadelphia is providing national leadership in the area of sex equity. Another well-kept secret , I suppose , is what sex equity is. Many of my colleagues in public education, hearing that I work in a sex equity project, assume that I am in sex education and feel called upon to make risque remarks. In this essay, I'll attempt to take the lid off …

Teaching The History Of Black Women: A Bibliographical Essay, Rosalyn Terborg-Penn
Teaching The History Of Black Women: A Bibliographical Essay, Rosalyn Terborg-Penn
Women's Studies Quarterly
The following article originally appeared in The History Teacher 13 (February 1980) and is reprinted here be permission.
During the latter part of the 1970s, students of American history have recognized that black women's unique history cannot be thoroughly analyzed within the confines of either black history or women's history. Unfortunately, a gap exists between the realization of the goal to correct the problem and the publication of secondary works on black women's history. To date, only one anthology containing original essays treats black women's experiences from an historical perspective: Sharon Harley and Rosalyn Terborg-Penn (eds.), The AfroAmerican Woman: Struggles …
Now You See It, Now You Don't: Women's Studies At The Pre-College Level In Ontario, Canada, Anne Chapman
Now You See It, Now You Don't: Women's Studies At The Pre-College Level In Ontario, Canada, Anne Chapman
Women's Studies Quarterly
Women's studies at the college level has taken root, flourished and spread in Canada as in the United States. But information about women's studies at the crucial pre-college level seems to be altogether lacking. The following report, based both on reading and interviews, surveys efforts in Ontario, Canada, to counter the male-biased curriculum, including the establishment of courses in women's studies. Although far from exhaustive, the survey may encourage others to amplify, supplement, correct and update it as well as to extend it to other parts of the world.
The extension of women's studies to the pre-college level has had …

Disabled Women: Sexism Without The Pedestal, Michelle Fine, Adrienne Asch
Publications and Research
The position of the disabled woman in current U.S. society deserves political, theoretical and empirical attention. In this paper we have delineated the economic, social and psychological constraints which place her at a distinct disadvantage, relative to disabled men and nondisabled women. We evaluate the ways in which having a disability is viewed as an impediment to traditional or nontraditional sex role development. The construct rolelessness is introduced, defined and examined. We conclude with reconmiendations for needed research and policy.

A Feminist Approach To Sex Education In The High School, Peggy Brick
A Feminist Approach To Sex Education In The High School, Peggy Brick
Women's Studies Quarterly
The following article originally appeared, under the title "Sex Education Belongs in School," in Educational Leadership 38 (February 1981): 390-94. It is reprinted here with the permission of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and Peggy Brick.
At Dwight Morrow High School, sex education is an eight-week unit of a course called Introduction to Behavioral Science. Over the year, students cover such topics as human relations; the life cycle; learning; sleep, dreams, and the unconscious; mental health and mental illness—all of which contribute experiences and insights that enable students to understand dimensions of human sexuality.

Women, History, And The Humanities: An Argument In Favor Of The General Studies Curriculum, Carolyn C. Lougee
Women, History, And The Humanities: An Argument In Favor Of The General Studies Curriculum, Carolyn C. Lougee
Women's Studies Quarterly
This essay was first presented as a talk at the recent meetings of the American Historical Association, on December 27, 1980. We think it is a bold approach to the issues of "mainstreaming" women's studies, and to the questions raised by advocates of and opponents to general education programs. It is also a plea for the importance of the humanities. We expect it will be controversial and plan to publish responses in subsequent issues.
During the past year, I happened to serve as Chair of Stanford University's Committee on Undergraduate Studies, and in that capacity I was charged with putting …

Everywoman's Guide To Colleges And Universities, The Feminist Press
Women's Studies Quarterly
We are printing the official QUESTIONNAIRE of the Everywoman's Guide project in this issue of the Women's Studies Quarterly in order to make its contents accessible to a large constituency interested in healthy educational environments for women. By the time you read this page, every college and university president in the U.S. will have received a copy of the questionnaire, and will have been alerted to the fact that it is also appearing in these pages. Because of the questionnaire's complexity, we have suggested to presidents that they may want to make use of Everywoman's Guide Committees to facilitate responses. …

Four Cheers for Elaine Reuben
When Elaine Reuben became National Coordinator of NWSA in 1978, there was no established National Office, there was no national profile of NWSA, the first Annual Convention had not been held, no NWSA projects or publications were in view, and no voice of NWSA was present in the Women's Studies Quarterly (then the Women's Studies Newsletter). We were about to become an institution, but we needed the builder, the person who could supply the vision, the bricks and mortar, and a bit of style as well.

"Strong Is What We Make Each Other": Unlearning Racism Within Women's Studies, Bettina Aptheker
Women's Studies Quarterly
In the fall of 1976 I was hired by the Women's Studies Program at San Jose State University to teach one course which I had outlined and proposed to that program's curriculum committee the previous spring. The course, entitled "Afro-American Women in History," began with "the legacy of slavery" as its theme and worked its way from the colonial era to modern times. The following year I taught the class again, this time under the auspices of the Afro-American Studies department. The first time I taught the class the students were overwhelmingly white. The second time they were overwhelmingly Black. …
