The Mutamathil Type Style: Towards Free, Technology-Friendly, Arabetic Types, Saad D. Abulhab Jan 2004

The Mutamathil Type Style: Towards Free, Technology-Friendly, Arabetic Types, Saad D. Abulhab

Publications and Research

Efforts to adapt various Arabetic scripts to the machine are as old as the field of typography. But most of these efforts concentrated primarily on forcing the machine to duplicate the Arabetic handwritten forms. Others have practically advocated divorce from the calligraphic tradition rather than enrichment and reform. One reason why the few modern attempts to typographically solve the technology-induced Arabetic script problems had failed is that many typeforms (or many times just theoretical calligraphy style) was presented as replacement for the traditional ones rather than as optional working types. New “controversial” types should be made widely available for users …

Anarchism And The Politics Of Homosexuality, Terence S. Kissack Jan 2004

Anarchism And The Politics Of Homosexuality, Terence S. Kissack

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

From the mid-1890s through the 1920s activists in the American, English-language anarchist movement carried on a spirited debate on the ethical, social, and cultural status of same-sex desire. Among Americans they were alone in doing so; no other political movement or notable public figure of the period dealt with this issue. By making same-sex desire a topic of political discourse the anarchist sex radicals helped shift the sexual, cultural, and political landscape within which all Americans operated. While the contemporary homosexual rights movement is not the lineal descendant of the turn-of-the-century anarchist movement, the activists examined in this dissertation addressed …

Risk Premiums On Government Bonds: A Cointegration Approach And Error Correction Model, Onisiforos Iordanou Jan 2004

Risk Premiums On Government Bonds: A Cointegration Approach And Error Correction Model, Onisiforos Iordanou

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this thesis we investigated the long-run relationships among risk premiums for long-run government bonds of seventeen countries from four regions (East Europe, East Asia, Africa and Latin America). To do this I applied the cointegration test determining the long-run dynamics among the risk premiums, while also employing a vector error correction model that abstracts simultaneously the short-run and long-run information about the relationships. Causality tests were also performed to determine the influence of each risk premium on others.

The results indicated that there is a strong long-run relationship among the risk premiums for each region. In other words, the …

Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos Jan 2004

Visual Enhancing Of Tactile Perception In The Posterior Parietal Cortex, Tony Ro, Ruth Wallace, Judith Hagedorn, Alessandro Farnè, Elizabeth Pienkos

Publications and Research

The visual modality typically dominates over our other senses. Here we show that after inducing an extreme conflict in the left hand between vision of touch (present) and the feeling of touch (absent), sensitivity to touch increases for several minutes after the conflict. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex after this conflict not only eliminated the enduring visual enhancement of touch, but also impaired normal tactile perception. This latter finding demonstrates a direct role of the parietal lobe in modulating tactile perception as a result of the conflict between these senses. These results provide evidence for visual-to-tactile perceptual …

"Real Men" Curriculum, Jessie Daniels, Ronald Shuler, Nina Aledort, Nicholas Freudenberg

Open Educational Resources

This is the curriculum for a program known as "REAL MEN," an acronym for "Returning Educated African American and Latino Men to Enriched Neighborhoods." A collaborative effort, the REAL MEN program was a public health intervention based at Rikers Island and at a community-based organization, Friends of Island Academy, for young men, ages 15-19, who were leaving jail and returning to their home communities. The curriculum for this program was designed to reduce drug use, HIV risk, and rearrest by helping participants examine alternative paths to manhood and consider racial/ethnic pride as a source of strength.

Would Brown Make It To New York City? The First Phase Of The Battle For School Integration, 1954-1957, Kristopher B. Burrell

Publications and Research

This conference paper looks at the struggle to desegregate New York's City's public schools in the immediate aftermath of the Brown v Board of Education decision in 1954. For the first three years following the Supreme Court decision, the New York City Board of Education make public overtures toward fulfilling the letter and spirit of Brown in New York, but in practice the Board of Education engaged in stalling and half-measures that succeeded in effectively stopping widespread school desegregation in the city.

Thoughts On Reading "The Personal": Toward A Discursive Ethics Of Professional Critical Literacy, Jane Hindman Sep 2003

Thoughts On Reading "The Personal": Toward A Discursive Ethics Of Professional Critical Literacy, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

Notes this special issue of College English that author has edited focuses primarily on embodied personal writing. Identifies and argues for a powerful alternative to masculinist discourse by incorporating an "embodied rhetoric" into professional discursive practices. Considers how embodied rhetoric requires gestures to the material practices of the professional group and to the quotidian circumstances of the individual writer.

Writing Intensive Courses In Theatre, Alisa Roost Sep 2003

Writing Intensive Courses In Theatre, Alisa Roost

Publications and Research

Most professors believe writing matters. Through writing our students are better able to synthesize ideas, communicate those ideas, and make connections across fields. While it can take significant time to grade all the assignments, it can threaten coverage of material, and our students rarely appreciate it, writing assignments can be crafted to reduce grading, add depth to coverage, and spark interest. What follows is an overview of how I incorporate writing into my theatre courses and some ways of crafting engaging writing-intensive courses.

Uncertainties In Precipitation And Their Impacts On Runoff Estimates, Balazs M. Fekete, Charles J. Vörösmarty, John O. Roads, Cort J. Willmott Jul 2003

Uncertainties In Precipitation And Their Impacts On Runoff Estimates, Balazs M. Fekete, Charles J. Vörösmarty, John O. Roads, Cort J. Willmott

Advanced Science Research Center

Water balance calculations are becoming increasingly important for earth-system studies. Precipitation is one of the most critical input variables for such calculations because it is the immediate source of water for the land surface hydrological budget. Numerous precipitation datasets have been developed in the last two decades, but these datasets often show marked differences in their spatial and temporal distribution of this key hydrological variable. This paper compares six monthly precipitation datasets—Climate Research Unit of University of East Anglia (CRU), Willmott–Matsuura (WM), Global Precipitation Climate Center (GPCC), Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), and NCEP–Department of …

The Race For Globalization: Modernity, Resistance And The Unspeakable In Three African Francophone Texts, Francesca Sautman May 2003

The Race For Globalization: Modernity, Resistance And The Unspeakable In Three African Francophone Texts, Francesca Sautman

Publications and Research

The "global village" that media pundits and politicians evoke as general currency might well be visualized, in this onset of the twenty-first century, as a village beset by fires, riot, and rampage, where hunger reigns unopposed. The paradox of the term poorly conceals the untold violence that the violence of rhetoric seeks to erase. Yet, contemporary African Francophone texts have been tearing off this mask for decades, locating themselves less often in idyllic villages, and more frequently, on the cable lines of suffering between dying villages and indigent cities. In the literature of the 1980s, the focus of this essay, …
