One of the most critical challenges in managing complex diseases like COVID-19 is to establish an intelligent triage system that can optimize the clinical decision-making at the time of a global pandemic. The clinical presentation and patients’ characteristics are usually utilized to identify those patients who need more critical care. However, the clinical evidence shows an unmet need to determine more accurate and optimal clinical biomarkers to triage patients under a condition like the COVID-19 crisis. Here we have presented a machine learning approach to find a group of clinical indicators from the blood tests of a set of COVID-19 …

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used aiming to boost exercise performance and inconsistent findings have been reported. One possible explanation is related to the limitations of the so-called “conventional” tDCS, which uses large rectangular electrodes, resulting in a diffuse electric field. A new tDCS technique called high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) has been recently developed. HD-tDCS uses small ring electrodes and produces improved focality and greater magnitude of its aftereffects. This study tested whether HD-tDCS would improve exercise performance to a greater extent than conventional tDCS. Twelve endurance athletes (29.4 ± 7.3 years; 60.15 ± 5.09 ml kg− 1 min− …

Fingerprinting The Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary Impact With Zn Isotopes, Ryan Mathur, Brandon Mahan, Marissa Spencer, Linda Godfrey, Neil Landman, Matthew Garb, D. Graham Pearson, Sheng-Ao Liu, Francisca E. Oboh-Ikuenobe Jul 2021

Fingerprinting The Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary Impact With Zn Isotopes, Ryan Mathur, Brandon Mahan, Marissa Spencer, Linda Godfrey, Neil Landman, Matthew Garb, D. Graham Pearson, Sheng-Ao Liu, Francisca E. Oboh-Ikuenobe

Publications and Research

Numerous geochemical anomalies exist at the K-Pg boundary that indicate the addition of extraterrestrial materials; however, none fingerprint volatilization, a key process that occurs during large bolide impacts. Stable Zn isotopes are an exceptional indicator of volatilityrelated processes, where partial vaporization of Zn leaves the residuum enriched in its heavy isotopes. Here, we present Zn isotope data for sedimentary rock layers of the K-Pg boundary, which display heavier Zn isotope compositions and lower Zn concentrations relative to surrounding sedimentary rocks, the carbonate platform at the impact site, and most carbonaceous chondrites. Neither volcanic events nor secondary alteration during weathering and …

Distribución De Las Funciones Retóricas De Las Citas En Los Apartados Del Trabajo Fin De Máster Escrito En Español Y En Inglés, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

This study correlates with a research study published in the journal Pragmalingüística, in which the contrastive use of the rhetorical functions of citations in master’s theses in Spanish and English was studied. The main objective pursued by this new research is to determine which rhetorical functions are used most frequently in the different parts of a master’s thesis and what these can accomplish in each part of the text. Following Petrić (2007), a computerized textual analysis of the rhetorical function of citation was used to study this phenomenon in a corpus of sixteen (16) theses of which eight (8) were …

Trans Adults Deserve A Right To Sue For Gender-Affirming Care Denied At Youth, Eliza Chung Jul 2021

Trans Adults Deserve A Right To Sue For Gender-Affirming Care Denied At Youth, Eliza Chung

City University of New York Law Review

This comment advocates that the statute of limitations be extended to permit adult transgender plaintiffs to bring civil claims against medical care providers in response to being denied gender-affirming care when they were children. The justifications surrounding the passage of the Child Victims Act of 2019 serve as a parallel to this issue. Like adult victims of child sex abuse, potential plaintiffs in this class are often emotionally unready to bring timely claims due to the traumas of being closeted and of being forced to endure an undesired puberty. The tort of negligent malpractice is a potential cause of action …

Reviving The Civic Body: Campaign For Suffrage Inside Prisons, Felony Enfranchisement In D.C., And Lawyering For Abolition, Uruj Sheikh Jul 2021

Reviving The Civic Body: Campaign For Suffrage Inside Prisons, Felony Enfranchisement In D.C., And Lawyering For Abolition, Uruj Sheikh

City University of New York Law Review

In July 2020, in the midst of a global uprising proclaiming Black Lives Matter, Washington D.C. became the first incorporated jurisdiction of the United States to abolish felony disenfranchisement by restoring voting rights for individuals in prison. The vision, strategy, and analysis behind voter restoration in D.C. is a case study on legal advocacy in tandem with movements for structural change. The abolition of felony disenfranchisement in D.C. is best understood through a vision of abolition of a different kind—the abolition of carceral state violence, of prisons, of punitive measures under the guise of justice. By orienting voter enfranchisement on …

Dynamic Parameter Estimation From Partial Observations Of The Lorenz System, Eunice Ng

Theses and Dissertations

Recent numerical work of Carlson-Hudson-Larios leverages a nudging-based algorithm for data assimilation to asymptotically recover viscosity in the 2D Navier-Stokes equations as partial observations on the velocity are received continuously-in-time. This "on-the-fly" algorithm is studied both analytically and numerically for the Lorenz equations in this thesis.

Voting Rights Lawyering In Crisis, Emily Rong Zhang Jul 2021

Voting Rights Lawyering In Crisis, Emily Rong Zhang

City University of New York Law Review

“In crisis” can both mean during crisis or in a state of crisis. This Article is about voting rights lawyering in reference to both of those meanings: voting rights lawyering during the Covid-19 pandemic reveals voting rights lawyering in trouble. Even before the pandemic, legal commentators and experts have sounded the alarm about dwindling legal protections for voting rights in the United States. Suppressive voting laws have been repeatedly upheld; structural reform litigation of election administration has become virtually nonexistent. That even lawsuits brought to make the vote accessible during a historic pandemic were met with much resistance and little …

The Cost Of Being Black In Social Work Practicum, Nia Johnson, Paul Archibald, Anthony Estreet, Amanda Morgan

Publications and Research

The social work profession is not exempt from fueling institutional racism, which affects the provision of social work practicum education for Black social work students. This article highlights how the historical and current social cost of being Black in the United States presents itself within social work education’s signature pedagogy. Social workers who hold bachelor’s degrees in social work (BSW) are more likely to be Black than those holding master’s degrees in social work (MSW; Salsberg et al., 2017). It takes Black students longer to earn an MSW degree though they are more likely to hold a BSW while also …

Precoder Design For Communication-Efficient Distributed Mimo Receivers With Controlled Peak-Average Power Ratio, Vinay A. Vaishampayan Jul 2021

Precoder Design For Communication-Efficient Distributed Mimo Receivers With Controlled Peak-Average Power Ratio, Vinay A. Vaishampayan

Publications and Research

We consider the problem of communicating over a relay-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with additive noise, in which physically separated relays forward quantized information to a central decoder where the transmitted message is to be decoded. We assume that channel state information is available in the transmitter and show that the design of a rational-forcing precoder - a precoder which is matched to the quantizers used in the relays - is beneficial for reducing the symbol error probability. It turns out that for such rational-forcing precoder based systems, there is natural tradeoff between the peak to average power ratio in …

Protein Motifs For Proton Transfers That Build The Transmembrane Proton Gradient, Divya Kaur, Umesh Khaniya, Yingying Zhang, M. R. Gunner

Publications and Research

Biological membranes are barriers to polar molecules, so membrane embedded proteins control the transfers between cellular compartments. Protein controlled transport moves substrates and activates cellular signaling cascades. In addition, the electrochemical gradient across mitochondrial, bacterial and chloroplast membranes, is a key source of stored cellular energy. This is generated by electron, proton and ion transfers through proteins. The gradient is used to fuel ATP synthesis and to drive active transport. Here the mechanisms by which protons move into the buried active sites of Photosystem II (PSII), bacterial RCs (bRCs) and through the proton pumps, Bacteriorhodopsin (bR), Complex I and Cytochrome …

Defining The Basis Of Cyanine Phototruncation Enables A New Approach To Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, Siddharth S. Matikonda, Dominic A. Helmerich, Mara Meub, Gerti Beliu, Philip Kollmannsberger, Alexander Greer, Markus Sauer, Martin J. Schnermann

Publications and Research

The light-promoted conversion of extensively used cyanine dyes to blue-shifted emissive products has been observed in various contexts. However, both the underlying mechanism and the species involved in this photoconversion reaction have remained elusive. Here we report that irradiation of heptamethine cyanines provides pentamethine cyanines, which, in turn, are photoconverted to trimethine cyanines. We detail an examination of the mechanism and substrate scope of this remarkable twocarbon phototruncation reaction. Supported by computational analysis, we propose that this reaction involves a singlet oxygeninitiated multistep sequence involving a key hydroperoxycyclobutanol intermediate. Building on this mechanistic framework, we identify conditions to improve the …

The Intersection Of Industry, Occupation, And Job Tasks With Hotel Room Cleaner Musculoskeletal Disorder Injuries: A Methods Approach To The Analysis Of California Workers’ Compensation Data, Pamela Vossenas Jun 2021

The Intersection Of Industry, Occupation, And Job Tasks With Hotel Room Cleaner Musculoskeletal Disorder Injuries: A Methods Approach To The Analysis Of California Workers’ Compensation Data, Pamela Vossenas

Dissertations and Theses

Abstract

Background

Hotel room cleaners are a high-risk occupation for musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) injuries among U.S. hotel workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes occupational injury rate data for Maids and Housekeeping Cleaners, the Standard Occupation Classification closest to the job of a hotel room cleaner, and for the hotel industry, yet the BLS does not cross reference injury rate data by occupation and industry. This lack of occupational injury surveillance data limits MSD injury prevention and intervention efforts targeting this high-risk occupation in the hotel industry. Workers’ compensation (WC) data is another source of administrative data with potential …

Transit Mobility And Premature Birth In New York City: A Population-Based Study, Ross B. Maddux Jun 2021

Transit Mobility And Premature Birth In New York City: A Population-Based Study, Ross B. Maddux

Theses and Dissertations

Transit mobility has been recognized as an essential element to economic attainment, environmental sustainability, and as a vital part of public health. Social and economic disparities paired with elusive and inefficient public transit present real barriers for the ability of efficient planning and use of time. Lengthier commutes and generally less efficient travel contribute to stress during a pregnancy and limit the ability to access work and prenatal care. In survey studies of women utilizing clinics as their prenatal care provider, nearly 25% listed transportation as a barrier to accessing care.

Prior research has not linked directly premature birth and …
