Scalable Quantum Compilation Approaches For Reliable Quantum Computing, Vedika Saravanan Jan 2023

Scalable Quantum Compilation Approaches For Reliable Quantum Computing, Vedika Saravanan

Dissertations and Theses

Quantum computing has the potential to revolutionize various industries, from pharmaceuticals to finance and transportation. Unlike classical computers, quantum computers are based on the principles of quantum mechanics and can perform specific calculations exponentially faster than classical computers. However, quantum computing is still in its early stages of development. It faces several challenges, including the high rate of errors and the limited number of qubits in quantum hardware. Therefore, more efficient and scalable methods are needed to translate quantum algorithms into executable forms on a quantum computer. To overcome these challenges, several research efforts are underway to develop scalable noise-aware …

Urban Freight Transportation: The Interaction Of Home Deliveries In Cities, Carla A. Tejada Jan 2023

Urban Freight Transportation: The Interaction Of Home Deliveries In Cities, Carla A. Tejada

Dissertations and Theses

The movement of freight in urban areas is a key factor in the sustainable development of cities. If managed correctly, it can potentiate economic growth and support urban lifestyles. Nevertheless, the movement of goods in cities is usually in conflict with other urban flows and is generally perceived as having more negative externalities, above all for environmental and social sustainability. While the first focuses on measuring the impact on the environment, the latter focuses on measuring the impacts of business decisions on people. The main goal of this dissertation is to study the relationship that urban goods movements, mainly residential …

Classifying Sidewalk Materials Using Multi-Modal Data, Jiawei Liu Jan 2023

Classifying Sidewalk Materials Using Multi-Modal Data, Jiawei Liu

Dissertations and Theses

Navigating safely and independently presents considerable challenges for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV), as it requires a comprehensive understanding of their neighborhood environment. Our user study reveals that materials and objects on sidewalks play a crucial role in navigation tasks. Unfortunately, current methods for assessing sidewalk materials are suboptimal, often relying on labor-intensive and expensive manual assessments that fail to capture the full range of sidewalk features critical to individuals with BLV.

In response to this problem, this master’s thesis investigates deep learning approaches specifically designed for the classification of multi-modal sidewalk materials. The proposed framework …

Tdcs Effects On Synaptic Plasticity And Motor Skill Learning, Forouzan Vasheghani Farahani Jan 2023

Tdcs Effects On Synaptic Plasticity And Motor Skill Learning, Forouzan Vasheghani Farahani

Dissertations and Theses

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves the application of low-intensity constant current to the brain through electrodes placed on the scalp. Its potential to enhance brain function and treat brain-related disorders has led to its increasing popularity due to its safety, simplicity, and affordability. However, its effectiveness remains a topic of debate.

Machine Learning Approach To Predict Tdcs-Induced Electric Current In The Human Brain, Chikako Olsen Jan 2023

Machine Learning Approach To Predict Tdcs-Induced Electric Current In The Human Brain, Chikako Olsen

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising non-invasive method for treating neurological and psychiatric disorders and enhancing cognitive function. However, the underlying mechanisms of tDCS are not fully understood, and there is no ground truth for determining, non-invasively, where in the brain tDCS electrical currents flow. At the same time, effective neuronal engagement from tDCS requires accurate localization of the induced currents to specific brain target regions. Machine Learning (ML) has the potential to significantly improve the accuracy and precision of tDCS current prediction. This study aims to develop a novel approach using ML to predict the location …

Analysis Of Chemical Elements In Basalts Using Mislabeled Data, A Machine Learning Approach, Jenifer Vivar Jan 2023

Analysis Of Chemical Elements In Basalts Using Mislabeled Data, A Machine Learning Approach, Jenifer Vivar

Dissertations and Theses

Scientists use basalt chemistry to discriminate among different tectonic settings. There are well-known chemical elements used to classify tectonic settings. An exploration of new features is done using Logistic Regression and Random Forest to discover any new elements of interest. The models were used with other tools, such as recursive feature elimination and permutations, to increase reliability. Among the scarcely explored chemical elements are Terbium (Tb), Holmium (Ho), Samarium (Sm), and Erbium (Er). The data used for the exploration contained many outliers. Therefore, an ensemble model was created to explore the location and composition of such outliers. The ensemble was …

Exploring Information Leakage In Historical Stock Market Data, Edison Hua Jan 2023

Exploring Information Leakage In Historical Stock Market Data, Edison Hua

Dissertations and Theses

Information leakage is a major concern for traders who want to execute large orders without affecting the market price. In this paper, we explore the sources and effects of information leakage in historical stock market data using various methods and metrics. We first define information leakage as a pattern caused by a trader that would otherwise not occur without the trader’s activity. Using historical data, the direct impact of a potential large trade cannot be measured, but we consider a minimal impact large trade to be one that minimizes changes to the established trading data. We then analyze how information …

Lidar Remote Sensing Of Aerosol And Ozone Profiles And Application To Air Quality Studies In New York City Area, Dingdong Li Jan 2023

Lidar Remote Sensing Of Aerosol And Ozone Profiles And Application To Air Quality Studies In New York City Area, Dingdong Li

Dissertations and Theses

Ozone (O3) and PM2.5 (Particulate Matter with a diameter less than 2.5 μm) are the main pollutants in New York City (NYC) due to high levels of anthropogenic emissions, complex urban meteorology, and regional transport. However, vertical distribution observations are still lacking. This thesis utilizes lidar remote sensing techniques to retrieve the vertical distribution of O3 and aerosols and study air pollution episodes in the NYC metropolitan area.

The thesis includes three parts. The first part analyzes continuous ceilometer observations of aerosols and atmospheric mixed-layer height (ML). We investigate the vertical, diurnal, and seasonal characteristics of the …

Mechanically Driven In Vivo Osteocyte Ca2+ Signaling: Aging And Pharmacologic Effects, James Padgett Jan 2023

Mechanically Driven In Vivo Osteocyte Ca2+ Signaling: Aging And Pharmacologic Effects, James Padgett

Dissertations and Theses

Bone’s ability to respond and adapt to mechanical loading declines significantly with age which is a major contributor to bone fragility. It is widely accepted that osteocytes are the key cells responsible for orchestrating the development of the “ideal” skeleton. This ability is attributed to osteocyte’s role as the primary mechanosensing cell that is responsible for maintaining the skeleton’s integrity throughout life. Recent work from our laboratory has shed light into how osteocytes respond to mechanical loading in vivo. The breakthrough approaches that enabled these discoveries were development of: (1) the first ever reporter mouse model with a genetically encoded …

Ultra-High Field Mri Methods For Precise Anatomical And Spectroscopic Measurements In The Brain And Application To Neurological And Neuropsychiatric Diseases, Judy Alper

Dissertations and Theses

Neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases and disorders are a major burden on society, impairing the health and functioning of millions of people every year. There is a need to define the biological bases of these diseases and identify potential biomarkers to improve diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment efficacy across multiple diseases.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging technique which facilitates detection of brain lesions and visualization of the brain overall. However, limitations in contrast and resolution at clinical field strengths may hinder investigation of the underlying biological mechanisms of these diseases. Ultra-high field MRI scanners, such as those at 7-Tesla, …

The Limits Of Community: Wendell Berry, Books Bans, And Intellectual Freedom As An Individual Right, Michael Kirby Jan 2023

The Limits Of Community: Wendell Berry, Books Bans, And Intellectual Freedom As An Individual Right, Michael Kirby

Publications and Research

Beginning with a broad overview of community-oriented arguments for or against intellectual freedom (exemplified, in one case, by the writer and activist Wendell Berry), this chapter defines two forms of community: one active, the other passive. But do appeals to community make sense in environments increasingly hostile to intellectual freedom? In what ways have both of these forms already been weaponized by right-wing actors? It can certainly be argued that intellectual freedom benefits communities, but what if a community rejects intellectual freedom altogether? After detailing a recent case involving Nikole Hannah-Jones’s The 1619 Project as well as subsequent efforts to …

Time As A “Built-In Headwind”: The Disparate Impact Of Portfolio Cross-Assessment On Black Tyc Students, Annie M. Del Principe Jan 2023

Time As A “Built-In Headwind”: The Disparate Impact Of Portfolio Cross-Assessment On Black Tyc Students, Annie M. Del Principe

Publications and Research

This study of a departmental portfolio cross-assessment practice sheds light on factors that appear to influence assessment outcomes for Black students and helps to tease out some of the reasons why this assessment ecosystem has a disparate impact on these students. The findings, drawn from student outcomes data and student survey data, suggest that it isn’t only, or even primarily, Black students’ linguistic variety that leads to higher failure rates. The writing qualities most commonly flagged on Black students’ failing portfolios are likely related to the very different material conditions in which they write their papers. These conditions challenge the …

Publications and Research

Impact melt rocks formed during hypervelocity impact events are ideal for studying impact structures. Here, we describe impact melt rock samples collected proximal to the 31 km wide 58 Ma Hiawatha impact structure, northwest Greenland, which is completely covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet. The melt rocks contain diagnostic shock indicators (e.g., planar deformation features [PDF] in quartz and shocked zircon) and form three groups based on melt textures and chemistry: (i) hypocrystalline, (ii) glassy, and (iii) carbonate-based melt rocks. The exposed foreland directly in front of the structure consists of metasedimentary successions and igneous plutons; however, the carbonate-based impactites …

Design/methodology/approach – A survey of 213 police officers from a large, urban police department in the Northeast United States of America is used to evaluate the relationship between officer perceptions of the EAP and the officers’ willingness to use and recommend the EAP to peers. Generalized linear regression models are used to evaluate the moderating effect of perceived organizational support (POS) …

The Role Of Suspect Development Practices In Eyewitness Identification Accuracy And Racial Disparities In Wrongful Conviction, Margaret Bull Kovera Jan 2023

The Role Of Suspect Development Practices In Eyewitness Identification Accuracy And Racial Disparities In Wrongful Conviction, Margaret Bull Kovera

Publications and Research

This article reviews the three previously studied categories of variables that are related to eyewitness identification accuracy: estimator (characteristics of the witnessing conditions), system (characteristics of the identification procedure that are under the control of the criminal legal system), and reflector (variables that reflect the likely accuracy of a witness). Although eyewitness scholars frequently turn to these variables and models of memory to explain why eyewitnesses make mistakes, none of these variables provides a reasonable explanation for the large racial disparities in wrongful convictions based on mistaken identifications, yet problematic policing practices might. The policies and practices guiding police efforts …

Potential Causes Of Racial Disparities In Wrongful Convictions Based On Mistaken Identifications: Own-Race Bias And Differences In Evidence-Based Suspicion., Jacqueline Katzman, Margaret Bull Kovera Jan 2023

Potential Causes Of Racial Disparities In Wrongful Convictions Based On Mistaken Identifications: Own-Race Bias And Differences In Evidence-Based Suspicion., Jacqueline Katzman, Margaret Bull Kovera

Publications and Research

Objective: We explored whether racial disparities in evidence-based suspicion (i.e., evidence of guilt prior to placement in a lineup) provide a better explanation of racial disparities in exonerations based on eyewitness misidentification than the own-race bias in eyewitness identifications. Hypotheses: We predicted that the own-race bias in identification accuracy would be insufficiently large to fully explain the racial disparities in wrongful convictions in cases with mistaken identification. We also predicted that possible racial disparities in the prior probability of suspect guilt before subjecting suspects to the risk of misidentification might better explain racial disparities in wrongful convictions. Method …

Ritual, Spectacle, And Theatre In Late Medieval Seville (Chapter 1), Christopher B. Swift Jan 2023

Ritual, Spectacle, And Theatre In Late Medieval Seville (Chapter 1), Christopher B. Swift

Publications and Research

From the fall of Islamic Išbīliya in 1248 to the conquest of the New World, Seville was a nexus of economic and religious power where interconfessional living among Christians, Jews, and Muslims was negotiated on public stages. From out of seemingly irreconcilable ideologies of faith, hybrid performance culture emerged in spectacles of miraculous transformation, disciplinary processionals, and representations of religious identity. Ritual, Spectacle, and Theatre in Late Medieval Seville reinvigorates the study of medieval Iberian theater by revealing the ways in which public expressions of devotion, penance, and power fostered cultural reciprocity, rehearsed religious difference, and ultimately helped establish Seville …

Room-Temperature Crystallography Reveals Altered Binding Of Small-Molecule Fragments To Ptp1b, Tamar Skaist Mehlman, Justin T. Biel, Syeda Maryam Azeem, Elliot R. Nelson, Sakib Hossain, Louise Dunnett, Neil G. Paterson, Alice Douangamath, Romain Talon, Danny Axford, Helen Orins, Frank Von Delft, Daniel A. Keedy

Advanced Science Research Center

Much of our current understanding of how small-molecule ligands interact with proteins stems from X-ray crystal structures determined at cryogenic (cryo) temperature. For proteins alone, room-temperature (RT) crystallography can reveal previously hidden, biologically relevant alternate conformations. However, less is understood about how RT crystallography may impact the conformational landscapes of protein-ligand complexes. Previously, we showed that small-molecule fragments cluster in putative allosteric sites using a cryo crystallographic screen of the therapeutic target PTP1B (Keedy et al., 2018). Here, we have performed two RT crystallographic screens of PTP1B using many of the same fragments, representing the largest RT crystallographic screens of …

Lear’S Daughters? Unenumerated Fundamental Rights And The Constitution, Thomas Halper Jan 2023

Lear’S Daughters? Unenumerated Fundamental Rights And The Constitution, Thomas Halper

Publications and Research

How to determine whether fundamental unenumerated constitutional rights exist, and if so, what they are? The questions are of obvious enormous importance—witness the current controversy over abortion—and yet courts have generally been content to address the issues superficially, sometimes, cavalierly. Their treatment of the most common rationale, an historical/traditional consensus, exemplifies this shallow approach. The underdeveloped character of the argumentation on this topic stubbornly remains one of the most glaring shortfalls of modern constitutional law.

Futures On Dry Ground: Anthropology And Coastal Planning, Theodore Hilton, Sheehan Moore Jan 2023

Futures On Dry Ground: Anthropology And Coastal Planning, Theodore Hilton, Sheehan Moore

Publications and Research

Around the world, governments, industry, and other actors are creating plans to save coasts from environmental crisis. Louisiana is one prominent example: levees and other measures protect oil and gas infrastructure from inundation as the wetlands buffer rapidly erodes—in large part due to that same industry. The state’s primary answer to land loss is a $50 billion Coastal Master Plan. To illuminate such responses in Louisiana and globally, this article reviews emerging literature and frames an anthropology of coastal planning around three themes: (1) novel orientations toward time and space, (2) the reproduction of power and capital in the name …

Publications and Research

Study of the timing and location for mRNA translation across model systems has begun to shed light on molecular events fundamental to such processes as intercellular communication, morphogenesis, and body pattern formation. In D. melanogaster, the posterior mRNA determinant, oskar, is transcribed maternally but translated only when properly localized at the oocyte’s posterior cortex. Two effector proteins, Bruno1 and Cup, mediate steps of oskar mRNA regulation. The current model in the field identifies Bruno1 as necessary for Cup’s recruitment to oskar mRNA and indispensable for oskar’s translational repression. We now report that this Bruno1-Cup interaction leads …

Potential Anti-Alzheimer Properties Of Mogrosides In Vitamin B12-Deficient Caenorhabditis Elegans, Denia Cai Shi, Chunlin Long, Ella Vardeman, Edward J. Kennelly, Michael A. Lawton, Rong Di Jan 2023

Potential Anti-Alzheimer Properties Of Mogrosides In Vitamin B12-Deficient Caenorhabditis Elegans, Denia Cai Shi, Chunlin Long, Ella Vardeman, Edward J. Kennelly, Michael A. Lawton, Rong Di

Publications and Research

Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to oxidative stress, which is known to be involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Mogrosides are plant-derived triterpene glycosides that exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity in animal cell lines and mouse models. Since amyloid-β toxicity is known to cause oxidative stress and damage to brain cells, we hypothesized that mogrosides may have a protective effect against AD. In this study, we investigated the potential anti-AD effect of mogrosides in vitamin B12-deficient wild-type N2 and in transgenic CL2355 Caenorhabditis elegans expressing amyloid-β peptide. Our data indicated that mogrosides have a beneficial effect on …

Adaptive Single Low-Light Image Enhancement By Fractional Stretching In Logarithmic Domain, Thaweesak Trongtirakul, Sos S. Agaian, Shiqian Wu Jan 2023

Adaptive Single Low-Light Image Enhancement By Fractional Stretching In Logarithmic Domain, Thaweesak Trongtirakul, Sos S. Agaian, Shiqian Wu

Publications and Research

Low-light image enhancement is a challenging task that aims to improve the visibility and quality of images captured in dark environments. However, existing methods often introduce undesirable artifacts such as color distortion, halo effects, blocking artifacts, and noise amplification. In this paper, we propose a novel method that overcomes these limitations by using the logarithmic domain fractional stretching approach to estimate the reflectance component of the image based on the improved Retinex theory. Moreover, we apply a simple adaptive gamma correction algorithm to the Lab color-space to adjust the brightness and saturation of the image. Our method effectively reduces the …

People Are Curious About Immoral And Morally Ambiguous Others, Jordan Wylie, Ana Gantman Jan 2023

People Are Curious About Immoral And Morally Ambiguous Others, Jordan Wylie, Ana Gantman

Publications and Research

Looking to the popularity of superheroes, true crime stories, and anti-heroic characters like Tony Soprano, we investigated whether moral extremity, especially moral badness, piques curiosity. Across five experiments (N = 2429), we examine moral curiosity, testing under what conditions the moral minds of others spark explanation-seeking behavior. In Experiment 1, we find that among the most widely watched Netflix shows in the US over a five-month period, the more immoral the protagonist, the more hours people spent watching. In Experiments 2a and 2b, we find that when given a choice to learn more about morally good, bad, ambiguous, or …

Publications and Research

Previous studies show increased sensitivity of older mice (28–29 months) compared with young adult mice (3 months, possessing a mature immune system) to radiation-induced GI lethality. Age-dependent lethality was associated with higher levels of apoptotic stem cells in small intestinal crypts that correlated with sphingomyelinase activity, a source of pro-apoptotic ceramide. The objective of this study is to determine whether the cycling crypt base columnar cells (CBCs) in aging animals are specifically more sensitive to radiation effects than the CBCs in young adult mice, and to identify factors that contribute to increased radiosensitivity. Mortality induced by subtotal body radiation was …

Logic As Applied Mathematics — With Particular Application To The Notion Of Logical Form, Graham Priest Jan 2023

Logic As Applied Mathematics — With Particular Application To The Notion Of Logical Form, Graham Priest

Publications and Research

The word ‘logic’ has many senses. Here we will understand it as meaning an account of what follows from what and why. With contemporary methodology, logic in this sense – though it may not always have been thought of in this way – is a branch of applied mathematics. This has various implications for how one understands a number of issues concerning validity. In this paper I will explain this perspective of logic, and explore some of its consequences with respect to the notion of logical form.

Inclusive Random Sampling In Graphs And Networks, Yitzchak Novick, Amotz Bar-Noy

Publications and Research

It is often of interest to sample vertices from a graph with a bias towards higher-degree vertices. One well-known method, which we call random neighbor or RN, involves taking a vertex at random and exchanging it for one of its neighbors. Loosely inspired by the friendship paradox, the method is predicated on the fact that the expected degree of the neighbor is greater than or equal to the expected degree of the initial vertex. Another method that is actually perfectly analogous to the friendship paradox is random edge, or RE, where an edge is sampled at random, and then one …
