Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman Sep 2023

Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …

Pre-Clinical Evaluation Of A Potential Ruthenium-Based Chemotherapeutic Agent For The Treatment Of Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Nazia Nayeem

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer that represents roughly 15% of all diagnosed breast cancers. TNBC is defined by the absence of expression of progesterone, estrogen, and human epidermal growth factor 2 receptors, and has a higher incidence rate in pre-menopausal women and women of African and of Hispanic ancestry. Due to the inability to target a receptor, treatment is limited to nonspecific chemotherapy or immunotherapy. Only one FDA approved therapy is available specifically to treat TNBC, which is antibody drug conjugate Sacitzumab-govitecan, given to patients who have already gone through two rounds of …

Remedios Varo: Inspirations And Creative Strategies, Margaret Colbert Aug 2023

Remedios Varo: Inspirations And Creative Strategies, Margaret Colbert

Theses and Dissertations

Remedios Varo is best known for the narrative, if enigmatic and symbol-laden, paintings she produced while living in Mexico from 1941 to 1963. This thesis argues that Varo’s key creative strategy was to mine and mimic the subject matter and motifs of other artists—Hieronymus Bosch and Leonora Carrington – as well as the visual culture related to the occult and other esoteric practices that she found in published sources, specifically by Carl Jung and Kurt Seligmann.

The Antagonistic Anatomy Of Anti-Shippers: A Thematic Analysis, Adrian A. Stone

Student Theses

Within the transformative fandom community is an ideologically-affiliated group known as anti-shippers, whose rhetoric contends that fictional interests are an indication of those held in reality. Anti-shippers focus solely on fictional material perceived to be sexual in nature and make frequent references to pedophilia. This rhetoric is used to justify harassment against individuals who do not share in their beliefs. As this population primarily operates on social media, this study was designed to conduct an exploratory investigation into themes gleaned from posts authored by anti-shippers on Twitter. Utilizing latent content analysis, a total of 187 posts from 222 unique users …

The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad

Student Theses

Forensic entomology is the use and application of insect information in legal matters, particularly in death investigations as insects utilize decomposing remains as a food source to complete their life cycle. Dermestes maculatus (DeGeer), larder beetles belonging to the family Dermestidae, are of considerable forensic importance since their larvae are typically found on human corpses during the later stages of decomposition – the advanced and dry/skeletal stages. Dermestes maculatus can be useful in estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) of a cadaver with advanced decomposition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the colonization (egg-laying) behavior of D. maculatus; …

Leveraging Local Perturbations To Map Allosteric Networks Of Phosphatases, Tamar (Skaist) Mehlman Jun 2023

Leveraging Local Perturbations To Map Allosteric Networks Of Phosphatases, Tamar (Skaist) Mehlman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Allostery is central to regulation of protein function, but our mechanistic understanding remains incomplete. A deeper understanding of how redistributions of conformational states drive allostery in proteins could allow us to better grasp natural regulatory principles in cells and open new doors to therapeutic development. Conformationally dynamic human Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases (PTPs) exemplify the challenges and opportunities associated with allostery. The archetypal PTP, PTP1B, has been highly validated as a therapeutic target but no allosteric inhibitors have been approved for clinical use. This is largely because our understanding of the mechanisms underlying allostery in PTP1B remains limited, despite the discovery …

Statistical And Biological Analyses Of Acoustic Signals In Estrildid Finches, Moises Rivera Jun 2023

Statistical And Biological Analyses Of Acoustic Signals In Estrildid Finches, Moises Rivera

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Acoustic communication is a process that involves auditory perception and signal processing. Discrimination and recognition further require cognitive processes and supporting mechanisms in order to successfully identify and appropriately respond to signal senders. Although acoustic communication is common across birds, classical research has largely disregarded the perceptual abilities of perinatal altricial taxa. Chapter 1 reviews the literature of perinatal acoustic stimulation in birds, highlighting the disproportionate focus on precocial birds (e.g., chickens, ducks, quails). The long-held belief that altricial birds were incapable of acoustic perception in ovo was only recently overturned, as researchers began to find behavioral and physiological evidence …

The Persephone Series: Storytelling, Art, And Making Sense Of Myself, Katie M. Frank Jun 2023

The Persephone Series: Storytelling, Art, And Making Sense Of Myself, Katie M. Frank

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

What can I do with what I already have? How can I make of it something beautiful, or useful, or interesting? Over the past two and a half years, I have been creating wall sculptures and collages out of found objects that speak to the history of my family, the way the earth reclaims its space after being used by humans, and how our individual lives have impact beyond our recognition. The people we love, the things we have lost, the garbage and grief we try to bury: it doesn’t go away. It comes back to the surface in shapes …

This website offers information about bi invisibility, highlights obstacles faced by bisexuals, provides resources for bisexuals, and includes some fun topics for bisexual people. It also has a page of bisexual testimonies: real bi people with real bi stories. There is evidence of erasure and invisibility, especially in children’s books and the field of …

Mood: A Zine Exploring The Value Of Youth-Oriented Media, Patricia K. Paul Jun 2023

Mood: A Zine Exploring The Value Of Youth-Oriented Media, Patricia K. Paul

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Media is a constant, persistent force in human lives that informs and influences through published, broadcasted, and digitally mediated formats. Mass media industries produce and distribute content consumed by diverse audiences, though the facilitators represent only a fraction of the demographics they serve.

Youth denote one of the most frequently misrepresented groups, with very few practical opportunities for young people to make decisions about the texts available to them. A jarring absence of youth participation in media creation at all levels suggests cultural contributions through art exclude young people's authentic perspectives and desires. Moreover, media portrayals of youth cannot adequately …

Haunted Homelands: Mary Hunter Austin's Search For Belonging In California's Central Valley, Aimee M. Maddalena Jun 2023

Haunted Homelands: Mary Hunter Austin's Search For Belonging In California's Central Valley, Aimee M. Maddalena

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

From childhood, Mary Hunter Austin resisted the social conformity expected of a young girl in 1850’s Carlinville, Illinois. Instead, causing her mother to “shed tears of vexation,” she was outspoken, opinionated, and read the “wrong” books, which, according to her mother, “was what made you queer so that people didn’t like you.” Young Mary had a rich inner life and was drawn in a spiritual, mystical way to the minutiae of the natural world. Also, she questioned the strict social structure that caused her mother to be outcast as a widow, while, at the same time, young women were beginning …

Jus Soli And Jus Sanguinis: Politics, Race, Culture, And Citizenship In The Dominican Republic And Haiti, Guido A. Proano

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The promulgation of laws such as the Dominican Republic’s Constitutional Court’s Judgment TC-168-13 serves as a basis upon which to argue the major impediments presented by the Dominican government to deny Haitians and Dominicans of Haitians descent citizenship. The right to citizenship is based on legal principles of jus soli and jus sanguinis and is recognized in a series of international legal documents. Following a Marxist framework, this research demonstrates the uncounted possible relationships between modern social forces and politics that have been working closely following European productions of knowledge for decades against Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent in …

Multi-Target Ligand-Guided Selection (Ligs) Against B-Cell Specific Antigens Expressed In A Single Lymphoma Cell Population, Nicole B. Williams Jun 2023

Multi-Target Ligand-Guided Selection (Ligs) Against B-Cell Specific Antigens Expressed In A Single Lymphoma Cell Population, Nicole B. Williams

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Nucleic acid ligands called aptamers are single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules which fold into functional three-dimensional structures to facilitate their target binding with high affinity and specificity. The method used to generate aptamers is an in vitro process called Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential enrichment (SELEX). A variant of SELEX, cell-SELEX has been used to select aptamers against cell-surface proteins in their native state. We recently introduced a novel method called Ligand-Guided Selection (LIGS) to identify aptamers against cell-surface markers. Herein, we expanded LIGS method into a multiplexing platform to partition multiple aptamers against B-cell-specific antigens, CD19 and CD20, …

The Personal And The Planetal: Essaying The Ecological, Eric Dean Wilson Jun 2023

The Personal And The Planetal: Essaying The Ecological, Eric Dean Wilson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

“The Personal and the Planetal: Essaying the Ecological” investigates contemporary American personal essays in an environmental mode in order to illuminate the boundaries between “self” and “planet.” It does so with an eye toward ecological devastation—namely, the violent effects of global warming—because I sense that thinking about the essay can help us better understand the ethical problems of climate change. Part of our climate crisis is a failure to recognize the boundaries of the personal and what I call the “planetal” (in an attempt to defamiliarize it from the more common “planetary”). Using a method that I call “the ecological …

Metabolic Reprogramming In Kras-Driven Cancer Cells, Ahmet Hatipoglu Jun 2023

Metabolic Reprogramming In Kras-Driven Cancer Cells, Ahmet Hatipoglu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Cancer cells require nutrient uptake for anabolic reactions needed for cellular growth and proliferation. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a key regulator of cellular growth that links nutrient availability and growth factor signals. mTOR mediated signaling pathways are often dysregulated in a wide range of cancers. We previously reported that KRas-driven cancer cells sense exogenous lipids via de novo production of phosphatidic acid, which ultimately activates both mTOR complexes – mTORC1 and mTORC2. Activated mTORC2 phosphorylates the survival kinase Akt at Ser 473 which is required for full Akt activation. A direct substrate of Akt and a major …

Factors Associated With The Life Satisfaction Of Gay And Bisexual Men And Their Variation By Race, Robert G. Considine Jun 2023

Factors Associated With The Life Satisfaction Of Gay And Bisexual Men And Their Variation By Race, Robert G. Considine

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although the literature is replete with evidence showing that gay and bisexual men experience higher rates of negative outcomes than their heterosexual counterparts, the literature exploring the well-being of this population is limited. Life satisfaction is a key aspect of well-being. There has been little research on the factors influencing life satisfaction for gay and bisexual men. Additionally, how these factors may vary by race for this population remains understudied. This gap in our knowledge impedes the ability of social workers to support gay and bisexual men in increasing life satisfaction. In addition, knowledge of how these factors vary by …
