Social-Ecological Resilience In The Viking-Age To Early-Medieval Faroe Islands, Seth Brewington Sep 2015

Social-Ecological Resilience In The Viking-Age To Early-Medieval Faroe Islands, Seth Brewington

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation aims to evaluate the development and maintenance of social-ecological resilience during the settlement-period (ca. 9th through 11th centuries CE) in the Faroe Islands. In particular, the core objectives include the identification of the key social and natural variables involved, the examination of how these variables contributed to overall resilience, and the investigation of the initiation of the Faroese domestic economy.

This research focuses primarily on an analysis of the 9th through 13th century archaeofaunal assemblage from the site of Undir Junkarinsfløtti, located on the island of Sandoy. This analysis represents the first detailed study of the Faroese settlement-period …

The Role Of Perineuronal Nets In Regulating Barrel Cortex Physiology, Philip Chu Sep 2015

The Role Of Perineuronal Nets In Regulating Barrel Cortex Physiology, Philip Chu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The ability of the brain to adapt to changing environmental conditions is regulated by genetic and environmental factors. One component of the brain extracellular matrix, a scaffold of proteins and proteoglycans, tightly ensheaths the soma and proximal processes of neurons. These Perineuronal nets (PNNs) play protective and structural roles in the brain, but also regulate plasticity and behavior. Their developmental expression is highly attenuated following sensory deprivation, or pharmacological silencing of neuronal activity. Thus, PNNs contribute to the activity dependent regulation of plasticity in the brain. Although PNNs are relatively ubiquitous in the neocortex, little is known about the degree …

/N/:/R/ Correspondences In Albanian Dialects: Understanding The N>R Sound Change, Katie Albany Sep 2015

/N/:/R/ Correspondences In Albanian Dialects: Understanding The N>R Sound Change, Katie Albany

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Albanian language is an Indo-European language that constitutes a separate branch in the Indo-European language family. There are two major dialects, Geg and Tosk, spoken in present day Albania that are mutually intelligible. There are morpho-syntactic differences between the two dialects and shared words provide evidence for a number of sound changes applying in certain contexts in Tosk. The focus of this paper is n > r sound change in Tosk applying to the nasal /n/ in an intervocalic position followed by an unstressed vowel. The lenition rule has been prolific diachronically, but stopped applying some time between the 13 …

Intimate Relationships: Reality And Normativity, Jason V. Altilio Sep 2015

Intimate Relationships: Reality And Normativity, Jason V. Altilio

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Close interpersonal relationships are a part of everyone's life at some point. For most people these relationships are actually prominent parts of their everyday lives. As such, it is important to figure out whether and how they fit into different normative theories of ethics. Relationships like those that exist as romantic couples, close friendships, and parent-child relationships share certain features with other close interpersonal relationships that I define as 'intimate relationships' in this dissertation. Intimate relationships are those that exist between people when they wish one another well, act for one another, do so mutually, treat one another as ends …

Assessing Theory Of Mind In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Children With Typical Development, Sarita Austin Sep 2015

Assessing Theory Of Mind In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Children With Typical Development, Sarita Austin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Theory of mind (ToM) is the cognitive mechanism that allows a person to make inferences about other person's beliefs/knowledge. To date, a sizable portion of the research in ToM skills has involved assessment using false-belief tasks (FBT). FBT tasks are designed to examine people's actions in order to determine whether their beliefs/knowledge take into account other person's beliefs/knowledge. The current study used an alternative behavioral task to FBT with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and young typically developing (TD) children. To date, a simple ToM task that has minimal linguistic and memory requirements has not been used with young …

The Role Of Dependence In Alcohol Reinforcement: Neurobehavioral Mechanisms, Michal Atzram Sep 2015

The Role Of Dependence In Alcohol Reinforcement: Neurobehavioral Mechanisms, Michal Atzram

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The motivation to consume alcohol is complex, though physiological dependence has long been implicated in alcohol reinforcement and alcoholism. The research presented here was conducted to examine the role of alcohol dependence on voluntary alcohol consumption and preference, the validity of the Lieber-DeCarli (LD) liquid diet as a procedure to induce dependence, and the effect of alcohol administration on dopamine and endocannabinoids. While the LD diet has been used extensively to induce alcohol toxicity and teratogenic effects, there has not been research that has examined its use in the development of dependence and alcohol reinforcement. This research utilized varying periods …

Basic Cable: A Reluctant American Perspective On The Arab Spring Through Revolutionary Art, Philip Ayoub Sep 2015

Basic Cable: A Reluctant American Perspective On The Arab Spring Through Revolutionary Art, Philip Ayoub

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Supported by a critical component that traces back the Egyptian revolution of 2011 to its roots in the post-Nasser era when the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces assumed nearly complete political and economic control over the country, this novella, based in New York City, looks at the crisis through an American lens. As the story progresses the protagonist learns that the conditions which precipitated the events in Egypt can be viewed at once as both a product of American capitalism and Egyptian complicity, as well as act as a mirror, albeit on a magnified scale, of the changing socio-economic …

Developmental Coordination Disorder: The Relationship Between Gait And Attention With Possible Implications For Early Identification And Intervention, Yocheved Bensinger-Brody Sep 2015

Developmental Coordination Disorder: The Relationship Between Gait And Attention With Possible Implications For Early Identification And Intervention, Yocheved Bensinger-Brody

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The aim of this research was to evaluate how increased levels of challenge to attentional capacity would affect the motor planning and coordination in the gait of children at risk of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) across developmental ages. The study incorporated a dual task paradigm requiring both motor and attention performance, with the primary hypothesis that children who are at risk of DCD across different ages (3- to 8 yrs.-of-age) would demonstrate an alteration in their motor strategies if they were simultaneously engaging in an attention task. A secondary hypothesis of this study was that there is an underlying deficit …

Effects Of Reproductive Experiences On Age-Related Neural And Behavioral Changes In Female Rats, Saranna Belgrave Sep 2015

Effects Of Reproductive Experiences On Age-Related Neural And Behavioral Changes In Female Rats, Saranna Belgrave

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The experiences of motherhood, pregnancy, birth and postnatal care, are associated with neural and behavioral changes. Female rats undergoing multiple bouts of motherhood (multiparous) have been shown in some, but not all studies, to have a dampened HPA axis stress response, changes in some hormone levels and better performance on spatial memory tasks compared to age matched females who have not given birth (nulliparous). Moreover, some of these changes extend into old age, approximately 24 months old. Thus, parous rats provide a unique, physiological model in which to investigate neural and hormonal factors that may contribute to cognitive decline and …

Reconsidering Organicism In Milton Babbitt's Music And Thought, Zachary Bernstein Sep 2015

Reconsidering Organicism In Milton Babbitt's Music And Thought, Zachary Bernstein

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation makes two related but distinct claims. The first explores the influence of organicism, particularly in the hierarchical formulation developed by Heinrich Schenker, on Milton Babbitt's thought. This influence is shown to inform Babbitt's writings on a range of issues, guiding his analyses, his view of music cognition, and his understanding of the tonal and twelve-tone systems, including his own compositional twelve-tone techniques. Analysis of Babbitt's compositions, however, reveals several complications with the organicist model: there are a number of pieces and situations that conflict with the expectations of hierarchical organicism. As a result, this dissertation advocates for a …

Knowledge Discovery And Prediction Modeling Of Protein-Drug Binding Kinetic By Integrating Machine Learning, Normal Mode Analysis And Molecular Dynamics Simulation, See Hong Chiu Sep 2015

Knowledge Discovery And Prediction Modeling Of Protein-Drug Binding Kinetic By Integrating Machine Learning, Normal Mode Analysis And Molecular Dynamics Simulation, See Hong Chiu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

One of the unaddressed challenges in drug discovery is that drug potency measured by protein-ligand binding affinity, such as IC50 and Kd in vitro, is not correlated with drug activity in vivo. Computational modeling is playing an increasing role in designing efficient therapeutics. However, existing computational methods for the high-throughput study of protein-ligand interactions (PLI) mainly focus on the prediction of the binding affinity. This is the combined effect of association (kon) and dissociation (koff) rate constants. Few works have been produced to predict koff or its reciprocal, residence time, which is a key …

Wh-Question Processing In Children With Cochlear Implants, Zarabeth Waldman Deluca Sep 2015

Wh-Question Processing In Children With Cochlear Implants, Zarabeth Waldman Deluca

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Children with cochlear implants (CIs) have exhibited difficulty accurately answering and producing wh-questions. The syntactic construction of wh-questions include syntactic movement, whereby the wh-question phrase that replaces the subject or object noun is fronted to the beginning of the sentence. This leaves a syntactic gap at the subject or object's original location, to be filled by the listener during immediate language processing. One view is that this syntactic gap is resolved by retaining that filler concept in working memory (WM), until it can be reintegrated into the wh-question. However, the CI population is also notable for WM deficits, which may …

Zirconium-89: Radiochemistry And Ligand Development Toward Improved Pet Applications, Melissa Ann Deri Sep 2015

Zirconium-89: Radiochemistry And Ligand Development Toward Improved Pet Applications, Melissa Ann Deri

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Antibodies are attractive targeting vectors for positron emission tomography (PET) based imaging agents due to their high affinity and selectivity to a variety of biological targets. Creating such imaging agents requires a radionuclide with suitable decay characteristics. This role has been filled by zirconium-89 which has a 78.41 h half-life that ideally matches the multi-day biological half-life of IgG antibodies.

However, the use of a radiometal necessitates the use of a bifunctional chelator to bind the metal and conjugate to the antibody. For 89Zr this has been the purview of various derivatives of desferrioxamine B (DFO); however, the observed …

Diversity And Phylogeography Of Anurans Of The Highlands Of Ethiopia, Xenia Freilich Sep 2015

Diversity And Phylogeography Of Anurans Of The Highlands Of Ethiopia, Xenia Freilich

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Located in Eastern Africa, Ethiopia is a country of unique geological features, among them the largest continuous Afro-alpine zone in Africa and the Great Rift Valley (GRV). The GRV formation began ~20 mya; it is a fault system that splits the central Ethiopian dome in two separate highland systems (Baker et al., 1972, Chorowicz, 2005). In spite of the general assumption that the GRV has played a major role in shaping the biodiversity of the country, its influence has not been fully investigated, as only a handful of studies have addressed its impact on the phylogeographic and evolutionary history of …

Three Potential Mediators Of The Effects Of Child Abuse And Neglect On Smoking In Middle Adulthood, Miriam Ghirmay Sep 2015

Three Potential Mediators Of The Effects Of Child Abuse And Neglect On Smoking In Middle Adulthood, Miriam Ghirmay

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The purpose of the current study was fourfold: (1) to determine whether individuals with histories of child abuse and neglect have higher rates of current cigarette smoking in middle adulthood compared with matched controls; (2) to examine whether individuals with histories of abuse and/or neglect are at increased risk for higher rates of current psychopathology (anxiety or depression), negative coping, and past year traumas and victimization experiences in adulthood compared with matched controls; (3) to determine whether current psychopathology, negative coping, and past year traumas and victimization experiences mediate the relationship between child maltreatment and current smoking; and (4) to …

A Man To Preserve Or Reform The Nation: Masculinity As Political Rhetoric In English Novels During The Revolution Controversy, Janne Burger Gillespie Sep 2015

A Man To Preserve Or Reform The Nation: Masculinity As Political Rhetoric In English Novels During The Revolution Controversy, Janne Burger Gillespie

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The English literary responses to the French Revolution have been given thorough critical attention as has the Revolution's impact on women writers and femininity. However, the Revolution's impact on and engagement with standards of manliness have been left relatively unexplored. This dissertation examines how a critique of masculinity is positioned in the space of contemporary political considerations in the quarter-century following the French Revolution. Thus, this dissertation argues that there is a dialectical engagement between masculinity and political views in late eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century English novels such as Maria Edgeworth's Belinda and Leonora, Charlotte Smith's Emmeline and Desmond …

Eye Tracking And Performance Evaluation: Automatic Detection Of User Outcomes, Allen V.R. Harper Sep 2015

Eye Tracking And Performance Evaluation: Automatic Detection Of User Outcomes, Allen V.R. Harper

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

While evaluating user task performance with eye tracking has been examined within the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), previous research has generally utilized eye tracking to understand how users perform a task. This dissertation defines a new paradigm by which eye-tracking research can be used in HCI: to predict whether users will be successful at a task, using a pattern classification model trained on their eye-tracking data.

This dissertation describes the experimental framework and it demonstrates (through laboratory experiments and machine-learning modeling) the feasibility and limits of predicting user outcomes based solely on eye movement patterns. Utilizing an online learning …

Expanding The Structural Biologist's Tool Chest By Chemical And Biocompatible Modification Of Peptides: From Characterizing Marine Snail Toxins To Outphoxing Tryptophan, Alexander Grigoryan Sep 2015

Expanding The Structural Biologist's Tool Chest By Chemical And Biocompatible Modification Of Peptides: From Characterizing Marine Snail Toxins To Outphoxing Tryptophan, Alexander Grigoryan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation focuses on expanding chemical derivatization methodologies of peptides with the ultimate goal of studying proteins that are not amenable to traditional high-resolution structural techniques. The first project, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Mandë Holford, uses improved synthetic and chemical derivatization methods to access and characterize peptidic natural products from venomous marine snails belonging to the family Terebridae. Closely related to Conus snails, the Terebridae also produce disulfide-rich peptide toxins (teretoxins) that are potent and specific agonists of ion channels and receptors of the central nervous system. Teretoxins are underexplored relative to Conus toxins, and represent a …

Population Genomics Of White-Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus) In New York City, Stephen Edward Harris Sep 2015

Population Genomics Of White-Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus) In New York City, Stephen Edward Harris

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Urbanization significantly alters natural ecosystems. New York City (NYC) is one of the oldest and most urbanized cities in North America, but still maintains substantial populations of some native wildlife. The white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, is a common resident of NYC's forest fragments, and isolated populations may adapt in response to novel urban ecosystems. Using pooled transcriptome-wide RNAseq data, individually barcoded transcriptome-wide RNAseq data, and genome-wide RADseq data, I found genetic differentiation between urban and rural P. leucopus populations and evidence suggestive of local adaptation. I compared genome and transcriptome-wide SNP data in P. leucopus from relatively large urban …

Is Cue-Based Memory Retrieval 'Good-Enough'?: Agreement, Comprehension, And Implicit Prosody In Native And Bilingual Speakers Of English, Elizabeth Pratt Sep 2015

Is Cue-Based Memory Retrieval 'Good-Enough'?: Agreement, Comprehension, And Implicit Prosody In Native And Bilingual Speakers Of English, Elizabeth Pratt

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation focuses on structural and prosodic effects during reading, examining their influence on agreement processing and comprehension in native English (L1) and Spanish-English bilingual (L2) speakers. I consolidate research from three distinct areas of inquiry'cognitive processing models, development of reading fluency, and L1/L2 processing strategies'and outline a cohesive and comprehensive processing model that can be applied to speakers regardless of language profile. This model is characterized by three critical components: a cognitive model of memory retrieval, a processing paradigm that outlines how resources may be deployed online, and the role of factors such as prosody in parsing decisions.

The …

Learning Functional Prepositions, John Stewart Sep 2015

Learning Functional Prepositions, John Stewart

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In first language acquisition, what does it mean for a grammatical category to have been acquired, and what are the mechanisms by which children learn functional categories in general? In the context of prepositions (Ps), if the lexical/functional divide cuts through the P category, as has been suggested in the theoretical literature, then constructivist accounts of language acquisition would predict that children develop adult-like competence with the more abstract units, functional Ps, at a slower rate compared to their acquisition of lexical Ps. Nativists instead assume that the features of functional P are made available by Universal Grammar (UG), and …

Persons As Self-Consciously Concerned Beings, Benjamin Abelson Sep 2015

Persons As Self-Consciously Concerned Beings, Benjamin Abelson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is an analysis of the concept of a person. According to this analysis, persons are beings capable of being responsible for their actions, which requires possession of the capacities for self-consciousness, in the sense of critical awareness of one's first-order desires and beliefs and concern, meaning emotional investment in the satisfaction of one's desires and truth of one's beliefs. The persistence of a person over time requires uninterrupted maintenance of those capacities. This view is in conflict with the more popular account of persistence in terms of the continuity of distinctive psychological states. Furthermore, this account of personhood …

Incipient Speciation In Freshwater Fish Species From Two Isolated Watersheds, Paula Gore Miller Sep 2015

Incipient Speciation In Freshwater Fish Species From Two Isolated Watersheds, Paula Gore Miller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The process of speciation occurs as a result of restricted gene flow between segments of an interbreeding population occupying different geographic areas. This separation may result in isolated populations which undergo genetic and phenotypic changes. The Wisconsin glacial period, which ended approximately 17,500 years ago, dramatically altered the geography of North America. The glacier covered almost the entire North America as it advanced. Areas that were not covered with ice provided suitable habitats (refugia) for relict species that were previously widespread in the northern section of the continent. As the ice sheet retreated, animals and plants were able to return …

The Insulin/Igf Signaling Regulator Cytohesin/Grp-1 Modulates Sensitivity To Excitotoxicity In C. Elegans, Nazila Tehrani Sep 2015

The Insulin/Igf Signaling Regulator Cytohesin/Grp-1 Modulates Sensitivity To Excitotoxicity In C. Elegans, Nazila Tehrani

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Excitotoxicity is a form of neurodegeneration that serves as the main underlying cause of brain damage in stroke/brain ischemia, and a contributing factor in a range of neurological diseases such as Epilepsy, ALS, Alzheimer, and Huntington's disease. In excitotoxicity, over-activation of glutamate receptors causes necrotic neuronal cell death. In spite of intense study of excitotoxicity, the molecular mechanisms that lead from glutamate receptor activation to necrotic death remain a mystery. Aging neurons are known to be more vulnerable to excitotoxicity and less likely to recover, but the underlying reasons for the increased cellular vulnerability are unknown. To gain insight into …

Variability, Stability, And Flexibility In The Speech Kinematics And Acoustics Of Adults Who Do And Do Not Stutter, Eric S. Jackson Sep 2015

Variability, Stability, And Flexibility In The Speech Kinematics And Acoustics Of Adults Who Do And Do Not Stutter, Eric S. Jackson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

It is well known that people who do and do not stutter produce speech differently, at least some of the time, even when perceived as fluent. One way that investigators have assessed these differences is by measuring variability, or the inconsistency of repeated speech movements. Variability in speech has typically been quantified using linear analysis techniques (e.g., measures of central tendency), and results have indicated that people who stutter produce speech that is (sometimes) characterized by increased variability. However, variability is a complex phenomenon, one that cannot be assessed by linear methods alone. This dissertation employs linear and nonlinear analysis …

The Ecology Of Winter Flounder From An Otolith Perspective, George William Jackman Sep 2015

The Ecology Of Winter Flounder From An Otolith Perspective, George William Jackman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation, sagittal otoliths were used as a lens to examine latent life history patterns in winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) and also as a means of interpreting the species' relationship to their abiotic and biotic environment. Otoliths provide a unique and powerful perspective into the lives of the telost fishes, because they permanently record the spatial and temporal histories through sequential growth patterns from conception to capture. The patterns of growth and dormancy in the otolith are regulated by endogenous and exogenous rhythms, and as the otolith grows, trace elements are absorbed from the ambient environment and …

Musical Regularity And Rhythmic Patterns: A Quantitative Analysis Of Birdsong Structure, Eathan Ezra Janney Sep 2015

Musical Regularity And Rhythmic Patterns: A Quantitative Analysis Of Birdsong Structure, Eathan Ezra Janney

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Birdsong is a complex, learned behavior that, like music, has meaningful units at multiple timescales. Birds perform by constructing extended presentations of their phrase repertoire. Each bird's repertoire is built from small units, such as syllables, or groups of syllables with characteristic pitch, rhythm, and timbre. Like a musician each bird has its unique structure of performance that communicates its individual identity. Also contained within a bird's performance, is information about its group identity and species identity. Like a musician's performance, a bird's singing affects the behavioral state of listeners'birds perform to attract mates and defend territory.

Subjectively, many can …

Cultural Evolution In Natural Populations: A Quantitative Bioacoustic Analysis, Chenghui Ju Sep 2015

Cultural Evolution In Natural Populations: A Quantitative Bioacoustic Analysis, Chenghui Ju

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Bird song is a powerful model system in behavioral biology, especially for learning and cultural evolution. Understanding the origins and maintenance of vocal diversity in nature is fundamentally important to acoustic biology. Here, we propose a large-scale, integrative population analysis of nearly 2000 songs of the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) (190 individuals) collected in western Long Island of New York during an interval of 37 years (between 1975 and 2012) to explore cultural change of bird songs. Generally, I have three aims in this study. In the chapter 1, to facilitate acoustic analysis for field recordings with ambient noise, of …

Whistles Of Sympatric Species Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) And Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis) In The Bahamas: Acoustic Characteristics And Contextual Use, Jennifer Daisy Kaplan Sep 2015

Whistles Of Sympatric Species Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) And Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Frontalis) In The Bahamas: Acoustic Characteristics And Contextual Use, Jennifer Daisy Kaplan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Bottlenose and spotted dolphins in the Bahamas frequently interact in social, socio-sexual, and aggressive encounters, and whistles are thought to play a key role in their communication. Concurrent vocal and behavioral recordings of wild sympatric species of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were collected from three Bahamas populations, and the acoustic parameters, structure, and contextual use of their whistles were analyzed. The mean acoustic parameters of spotted dolphins in the Bimini and White Sand Ridge Bahamas populations were higher in frequency than those of bottlenose dolphins, but bottlenose dolphins produced whistles that had higher …

Olfaction As The Paradigm For Perceptual Philosophy, Andreas Keller Sep 2015

Olfaction As The Paradigm For Perceptual Philosophy, Andreas Keller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Plato wrote that smell is of a "half-formed nature" and that not much can be said about it, and Kant identified smell as the "most ungrateful" and "most dispensable" of the senses. Because contemporary philosophers share this distaste for smell perception, olfaction is often dismissed or ignored in philosophical accounts of perception. Instead, contemporary philosophy of perception is based almost exclusively on visual perception. The goal of this dissertation is to show that this focus on a single modality distorts our understanding of what perception is.

I am not the first to realize the potential of opening up perceptual philosophy …
