Reshaping The Event Horizon‑ Marketing Utopia At Music Festivals, Justin D. Joffe Dec 2015

Reshaping The Event Horizon‑ Marketing Utopia At Music Festivals, Justin D. Joffe

Capstones

Imagine a world where every leisure activity is tracked, recorded, and then analyzed as market research according to your age and gender demographic. Imagine the next phase after smartphone payments, when a chip linking your finances isn’t in your phone, but on your wrist. Imagine a vast field of fellow fun-‐seekers, eating, drinking and dancing in hedonistic, chemically enhanced utopia. Such a scene certainly requires some open-‐ mindedness and improvisation, sure, a willingness to submit oneself to a vulnerable environment of whimsy. Now imagine being subtly exposed to advertisements in such a mindset. It’s no Orwellian controlled dystopia, really. You’ve …

Modernism Contested: Gego's Grids And The Aesthetics Of Temporality, Victoria L. Fedrigotti Dec 2015

Modernism Contested: Gego's Grids And The Aesthetics Of Temporality, Victoria L. Fedrigotti

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces Gego’s contestation of art historical modernism through examining her relationship to the modernist grid and to her modernist genealogy of Constructivism, Geometric Abstraction, and Kineticism. These two nonlinear developments subvert the teleological conception of progress presumed by Greenbergian modernism, and bring forth Gego’s own aesthetic conception of temporality.

Impact Of Executive Order 13211 On Environmental Regulation: An Empirical Study, Elizabeth Ann Glass Geltman Dec 2015

Impact Of Executive Order 13211 On Environmental Regulation: An Empirical Study, Elizabeth Ann Glass Geltman

Publications and Research

A great deal has been written about the Energy Policy Act of 2005 exempting oil and gas operations using hydraulic fracturing from the purview of certain federal environmental laws. Far less attention has been paid to George W. Bush’s Executive Order 13211 (EO 13211), entitled “Actions Concerning Regulations that Significantly Affect Energy Supply, Distribution or Use.” The executive order requires federal agencies to evaluate the impact of federal regulations on “supply, distribution and use of energy.” This study examined the impact of EO 13211 on United States environmental and conservation regulations proposed and promulgated by federal agencies. The study found …

The result is a culmination of influences that situate the work and give the reader an intimate understanding of the final art exhibition. With this map, the viewer can navigate the processes and contexts of the artwork.

Subjunctive Desires: Becoming Animal In Green Porno And Seduce Me, Cynthia Chris Dec 2015

Subjunctive Desires: Becoming Animal In Green Porno And Seduce Me, Cynthia Chris

Publications and Research

In the series of short films known as Green Porno and Seduce Me, the director and actor Isabella Rossellini becomes animal — insect, sea creature, bird, or mammal — to act the mating behaviors of non-human animals. Both educational and playful, each video begins which Rossellini imagining, "If I were ..." But not all becomings are knowingly desired. This essay explores Deleuze and Guattari's concept of becoming animal through Rossellini's series and Franz Kafka's iconic novella The Metamorphosis.

Egf As A New Therapeutic Target For Medulloblastoma Metastasis, Jennifer Rico-Varela, Tanya Singh, Sean Mccutcheon, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

Medulloblastoma (MB) is a malignant pediatric brain tumor known for its aggressive metastatic potential. Despite the well-documented migration of MB cells to other parts of the brain and spinal column, MB chemotaxis is poorly understood. Herein, we examined the in vitro migratory and cellular responses of MB-derived cells to external signaling of Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB), and the stromal cellderived factors 1-alpha (SDF-1). Experiments utilized transwell assays and immunocytochemistry to identify receptor activation in MB migration, and used a microfluidic platform to examine directionality, trajectory, and gradient-dependence of motile cells. Data illustrates …

This study explored using no-reward markers (NRMs). Dogs were taught a novel trick. In the IG group dogs’ errors were ignored; in the NRM group they elicited a tone. Performance and stress were evaluated. IG dogs reached higher levels of performance, with no difference in the frequency of stress behaviors.

Digital Preservation, Stephen Klein Dec 2015

Digital Preservation, Stephen Klein

Publications and Research

Despite the ease of creation, the web is ephemeral. The fleeting nature of websites present a challenge to repositories when a record needs to be preserved. The Graduate Center Library was recently presented with this challenge with the increase of submissions of online components to dissertations. This presentation focused on the need to capture a snapshot, the limitations of current normative practices and some alternative approaches.

Portraits Of Children Of Alcoholics: Stories That Add Hope To Hope, Meagan Lacy Dec 2015

Portraits Of Children Of Alcoholics: Stories That Add Hope To Hope, Meagan Lacy

Publications and Research

This literary analysis examines the emergence of children of alcoholics narratives and their growth from "resource" texts to literary subgenre. While early texts offer useful information about parental alcoholism, they are also limited. Namely, they do not adequately mirror the diversity of children, families, and problems associated with parental alcoholism nor do they offer alternatives for children whose parents do not, or cannot, seek treatment for their addiction. Literature, on the other hand, in inviting what philosopher Martha Nussbaum refers to as "narrative play," can help children learn to understand and empathize with others, nourish their inner curiosity, and, most …

If God Didn’T Satisfice, We Could Still Exist, Rick Repetti Dec 2015

If God Didn’T Satisfice, We Could Still Exist, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

Theodicies of satisficing – defenses of God’s goodness that justify creating minimally satisfactory beings/worlds – originate with Robert Merrihew Adams (1972, 1979). Adams (1972) argued that in creating imperfect beings God was graceful in giving the undeserved gift of life. There have been many objections to Adams’s argument; e.g., Jerome A. Weinstock (1975) objected that God still would have been graceful in granting undeserved life to superior beings, and, among others, E. Wielenberg (2004) objected that grace doesn’t erase the imperfection of creating imperfection. However, Adams’s theodicy arguably maintains two points: (a) non-existing superior beings cannot be harmed by not …

The Effect Of Ultralow-Dose Antibiotics Exposure On Soil Nitrate And N2o Flux, Stephanie L. Devries, Madeline Loving, Xiqing Li, Pengfei Zhang Nov 2015

The Effect Of Ultralow-Dose Antibiotics Exposure On Soil Nitrate And N2o Flux, Stephanie L. Devries, Madeline Loving, Xiqing Li, Pengfei Zhang

Publications and Research

Exposure to sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics has been shown to alter the metabolic activity of micro-organisms, but the impact on soil denitrification and N2O production has rarely been reported. In this study, incubation and column transport experiments were conducted on soils exposed to as many as four antibiotics in the ng·kg−1 range (several orders of magnitude below typical exposure rates) to evaluate the impact of ultralow dose exposure on net nitrate losses and soil N2O flux over time. Under anaerobic incubation conditions, three antibiotics produced statistically significant dose response curves in which denitrification was stimulated at some doses and inhibited …

Increases In Perspective Embedding Increase Reading Time Even With Typical Text Presentation: Implications For The Reading Of Literature, D. H. Whalen, Lisa Zunshine, Michael Holquist Nov 2015

Increases In Perspective Embedding Increase Reading Time Even With Typical Text Presentation: Implications For The Reading Of Literature, D. H. Whalen, Lisa Zunshine, Michael Holquist

Publications and Research

Reading fiction is a major component of intellectual life, yet it has proven difficult to study experimentally. One aspect of literature that has recently come to light is perspective embedding (“she thought I left” embedding her perspective on “I left”), which seems to be a defining feature of fiction. Previous work (Whalen et al., 2012) has shown that increasing levels of embedment affects the time that it takes readers to read and understand short vignettes in a moving window paradigm. With increasing levels of embedment from 1 to 5, reading times in a moving window paradigm rose almost linearly. However, …

Word-Length Correlations And Memory In Large Texts: A Visibility Network Analysis, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Daniel Aguilar-Velázquez, Ricardo Hernández-Pérez, Larry S. Liebovitch Nov 2015

Word-Length Correlations And Memory In Large Texts: A Visibility Network Analysis, Lev Guzmán-Vargas, Bibiana Obregón-Quintana, Daniel Aguilar-Velázquez, Ricardo Hernández-Pérez, Larry S. Liebovitch

Publications and Research

We study the correlation properties of word lengths in large texts from 30 ebooks in the English language from the Gutenberg Project (www.gutenberg.org) using the natural visibility graph method (NVG). NVG converts a time series into a graph and then analyzes its graph properties. First, the original sequence of words is transformed into a sequence of values containing the length of each word, and then, it is integrated. Next, we apply the NVG to the integrated word-length series and construct the network. We show that the degree distribution of that network follows a power law, P(k)∼k−γP(k)∼k-γ, with two regimes, which …

In Vitro And In Vivo Evaluation Of Water-Soluble Iminophosphorane Ruthenium(Ii) Compounds. A Potential Chemotherapeutic Agent For Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Malgorzata Frik, Alberto Martínez, Benelita T. Elie, Oscar Gonzalo, Daniel Ramírez De Mingo, Mercedes Sanaú, Roberto Sánchez-Delgado, Tanmoy Sadhukha, Swayam Prabha, Joe W. Ramos, Isabel Marzo, María Contel

Publications and Research

A series of organometallic ruthenium(II) complexes containing iminophosphorane ligands have been synthesized and characterized. Cationic compounds with chloride as counterion are soluble in water (70–100 mg/mL). Most compounds (especially highly water-soluble 2) are more cytotoxic to a number of human cancer cell lines than cisplatin. Initial mechanistic studies indicate that the cell death type for these compounds is mainly through canonical or caspase-dependent apoptosis, nondependent on p53, and that the compounds do not interact with DNA or inhibit protease cathepsin B. In vivo experiments of 2 on MDA-MB-231 xenografts in NOD.CB17-Prkdc SCID/J mice showed an impressive tumor reduction (shrinkage) of …

Environmental Enrichment Increases Glucocorticoid Receptors And Decreases Glua2 And Protein Kinase M Zeta (Pkmζ) Trafficking During Chronic Stress: A Protective Mechanism?, Roseanna M. Zanca, Stephen H. Braren, Brigid Maloney, Lisa M. Schrott, Victoria N. Luine, Peter A. Serrano Nov 2015

Environmental Enrichment Increases Glucocorticoid Receptors And Decreases Glua2 And Protein Kinase M Zeta (Pkmζ) Trafficking During Chronic Stress: A Protective Mechanism?, Roseanna M. Zanca, Stephen H. Braren, Brigid Maloney, Lisa M. Schrott, Victoria N. Luine, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

Environmental enrichment (EE) housing paradigms have long been shown beneficial for brain function involving neural growth and activity, learning and memory capacity, and for developing stress resiliency. The expression of the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA2, which is important for synaptic plasticity and memory, is increased with corticosterone (CORT), undermining synaptic plasticity and memory. Thus, we determined the effect of EE and stress on modulating GluA2 expression in Sprague-Dawley male rats. Several markers were evaluated which include: plasma CORT, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), GluA2, and the atypical protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ). For 1 week standard-(ST) or EE-housed animals …

Adaptive Evolution Of Eel Fluorescent Proteins From Fatty Acid Binding Proteins Produces Bright Fluorescence In The Marine Environment, David F. Gruber, Jean P. Gaffney, Shaadi Mehr, Rob Desalle, John S. Sparks, Jelena Platisa, Vincent A. Pieribone

Publications and Research

We report the identification and characterization of two new members of a family of bilirubin-inducible fluorescent proteins (FPs) from marine chlopsid eels and demonstrate a key region of the sequence that serves as an evolutionary switch from non-fluorescent to fluorescent fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs). Using transcriptomic analysis of two species of brightly fluorescent Kaupichthys eels (Kaupichthys hyoproroides and Kaupichthys n. sp.), two new FPs were identified, cloned and characterized (Chlopsid FP I and Chlopsid FP II). We then performed phylogenetic analysis on 210 FABPs, spanning 16 vertebrate orders, and including 163 vertebrate taxa. We show that the fluorescent FPs diverged …

Anthology And Absence: The Post-9/11 Anthologizing Impulse, Anne Lovering Rounds Nov 2015

Anthology And Absence: The Post-9/11 Anthologizing Impulse, Anne Lovering Rounds

Publications and Research

The decade after the attacks of 9/11 and the fall of the World Trade Center saw a proliferation of New York-themed literary anthologies from a wide range of publishers. With titles like Poetry After 9/11, Manhattan Sonnet, Poems of New York, Writing New York, and I Speak of the City, these texts variously reflect upon their own post-9/11 plurivocality as preservative, regenerative, and reconstructive. However, the work of such anthologies is more complex than filling with plurivocality the physical and emotional hole of Ground Zero. These regional collections operate on the dilemma of all anthologies: that between collecting and editing. …

Organometallic Titanocene–Gold Compounds As Potential Chemotherapeutics In Renal Cancer. Study Of Their Protein Kinase Inhibitory Properties, Jacob Fernández-Gallardo, Benelita T. Elie, Florian J. Sulzmaier, Mercedes Sanaú, Joe W. Ramos, María Contel Oct 2015

Organometallic Titanocene–Gold Compounds As Potential Chemotherapeutics In Renal Cancer. Study Of Their Protein Kinase Inhibitory Properties, Jacob Fernández-Gallardo, Benelita T. Elie, Florian J. Sulzmaier, Mercedes Sanaú, Joe W. Ramos, María Contel

Publications and Research

Early–late transition metal TiAu2 compounds [(η-C5H5)2Ti{OC(O)CH2PPh2AuCl}2] (3) and new [(η-C5H5)2Ti{OC(O)-4-C6H4PPh2AuCl}2] (5) were evaluated as potential anticancer agents in vitro against renal and prostate cancer cell lines. The compounds were significantly more effective than monometallic titanocene dichloride and gold(I) [{HOC(O)RPPh2}AuCl] (R = −CH2– 6, −4-C6H4– 7) derivatives in renal cancer cell lines, indicating a synergistic effect of the resulting heterometallic species. The activity on renal cancer cell lines (for 5 in the nanomolar range) was considerably higher than that of cisplatin and highly active titanocene Y. Initial mechanistic studies in Caki-1 cells in vitro coupled with studies of their inhibitory properties …

In Vitro Mutational And Bioinformatics Analysis Of The M71 Odorant Receptor And Its Superfamily, Jaclyn Bubnell, Sophie Jamet, Delia Tomoiaga, Charlotte D’Hulst, Konstantinos Krampis, Paul Feinstein Oct 2015

In Vitro Mutational And Bioinformatics Analysis Of The M71 Odorant Receptor And Its Superfamily, Jaclyn Bubnell, Sophie Jamet, Delia Tomoiaga, Charlotte D’Hulst, Konstantinos Krampis, Paul Feinstein

Publications and Research

We performed an extensive mutational analysis of the canonical mouse odorant receptor (OR) M71 to determine the properties of ORs that inhibit plasma membrane trafficking in heterologous expression systems. We employed the use of the M71::GFP fusion protein to directly assess plasma membrane localization and functionality of M71 in heterologous cells in vitro or in olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in vivo. OSN expression of M71::GFP show only small differences in activity compared to untagged M71. However, M71::GFP could not traffic to the plasma membrane even in the presence of proposed accessory proteins RTP1S or mβ2AR. To ask if ORs contain …

Reinforcing Endothelial Junctions Prevents Microvessel Permeability Increase And Tumor Cell Adhesion In Microvessels In Vivo, Bingmei M. Fu, Jinlin Yang, Bin Cai, Jie Fan, Lin Zhang, Min Zeng Oct 2015

Reinforcing Endothelial Junctions Prevents Microvessel Permeability Increase And Tumor Cell Adhesion In Microvessels In Vivo, Bingmei M. Fu, Jinlin Yang, Bin Cai, Jie Fan, Lin Zhang, Min Zeng

Publications and Research

Tumor cell adhesion to the microvessel wall is a critical step during tumor metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a secretion of tumor cells, can increase microvessel permeability and tumor cell adhesion in the microvessel. To test the hypothesis that inhibiting permeability increase can reduce tumor cell adhesion, we used in vivo fluorescence microscopy to measure both microvessel permeability and adhesion rates of human mammary carcinoma MDA-MB-231 cells in post-capillary venules of rat mesentery under the treatment of VEGF and a cAMP analog, 8-bromo-cAMP, which can decrease microvessel permeability. By immunostaining adherens junction proteins between endothelial cells forming the microvessel …

Factors Influencing The Choice Of A Safe Haven For Offloading Illegally Caught Fish: A Comparative Analysis Of Developed And Developing Economies, Nerea Marteache, Julie S. Viollaz, Gohar A. Petrossian Oct 2015

Factors Influencing The Choice Of A Safe Haven For Offloading Illegally Caught Fish: A Comparative Analysis Of Developed And Developing Economies, Nerea Marteache, Julie S. Viollaz, Gohar A. Petrossian

Publications and Research

Using data from 72 countries, this study focuses on factors that affect illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing vessels’ choice of country to offload their catch, with a specific emphasis on the differences between developed and developing economies. The concept of choice-structuring properties is applied to analyze whether the following factors influence the selection of a country: concealability of vessels and illegally caught fish; convenience of the ports; strength of fisheries monitoring, control, and surveillance measures; effectiveness of country governance; and commitment to wildlife protection regulations. Results indicate that, rather than a country’s level of development, situational factors play a …

Size Does Matter: Crocodile Mothers React More To The Voice Of Smaller Offspring, T. Chabert, A. Colin, T. Aubin, V. Shacks, S. L. Bourquin, R. M. Elsey, J. G. Acosta, N. Mathevon

Publications and Research

Parental care is widespread in Archosaurs (birds, crocodilians, dinosaurs and pterosaurs), and this group provides a useful model for the evolution of parent-offspring interactions. While offspring signalling has been well-studied in birds, the modulation of parental care in crocodilians remains an open question. Here we show that acoustic communication has a key role in the dynamics of crocodilian’ mother-offspring relationships. We found embedded information about the emitter’s size in juvenile calls of several species, and experimentally demonstrated that Nile crocodile mothers breeding in the wild are less receptive to the calls of larger juveniles. Using synthetized sounds, we further showed …
