Forget-Me-Not: American Consumerism And Its Impact On Philadelphia Gravestones, 1800-1930, Melissa A. Elgendy
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the relationship between the growing consumer ideology brought about by the American Industrial Revolution and changing gravestone characteristics in Philadelphia, PA between 1800-1930. Examining their connection uncovers how consumerism impacted individual’s sense of self and viewed their place in society, which are then reflected in material culture.
A Charitable Scheme: William Smith, Michael Schlatter, And The German Free Schools, Daniel M. Crown
A Charitable Scheme: William Smith, Michael Schlatter, And The German Free Schools, Daniel M. Crown
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes William Smith’s development of “German Free Schools” in Pennsylvania between 1753-1755. It argues that these schools, ostensibly meant to acclimatize German immigrants to a British colony, were in fact intended to increase pro-Proprietary sympathy, isolate sectarian preachers, and end Quaker dominance over the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

African Wild Dog, Lycaon Pictus, Coloration Patterns And Social Aggregation, Ayong J. Kim
Theses and Dissertations
Packs of African wild dogs, Lycaon pictus, were analyzed for coloration patterns and social aggregation tendencies. Mapped locations determined if the coat patterns followed a geographic distribution that corresponded to Southern or Eastern phenotypic forms. Social aggregation tendencies were observed to determine grouping behavior presumably related to individuals’ roles.
Reward Preferences In Domestic Horses (Equus Caballus), Elizabeth E. Jaeger
Reward Preferences In Domestic Horses (Equus Caballus), Elizabeth E. Jaeger
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined stress response in domestic horses (Equus caballus) to determine if horses show preference for either traditional or natural horsemanship training methods to test the hypothesis that natural horsemanship would induce less stress. Our results show that natural horsemanship rewards elicited lower stress response in horses.

Publications and Research
Background: Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). Functional studies of mitochondrial bioenergetics have focused mostly on superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) mutants, and showed that mutant human SOD1 impairs mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, calcium homeostasis, and dynamics. However, recent reports have indicated that alterations in transactivation response element DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) can also lead to defects of mitochondrial morphology and dynamics. Furthermore, it was proposed that TDP-43 mutations cause oxidative phosphorylation impairment associated with respiratory chain defects and that these effects were caused by mitochondrial localization of the mutant …
Zika Virus-Like Particle (Vlp) Based Vaccine, Héléne Boigard, Alexandra Alimova, George R. Martin, Al Katz, Paul Gottlieb, Jose M. Galarza
Zika Virus-Like Particle (Vlp) Based Vaccine, Héléne Boigard, Alexandra Alimova, George R. Martin, Al Katz, Paul Gottlieb, Jose M. Galarza
Publications and Research
The newly emerged mosquito-borne Zika virus poses a major public challenge due to its ability to cause significant birth defects and neurological disorders. The impact of sexual transmission is unclear but raises further concerns about virus dissemination. No specific treatment or vaccine is currently available, thus the development of a safe and effective vaccine is paramount. Here we describe a novel strategy to assemble Zika virus-like particles (VLPs) by co-expressing the structural (CprME) and non-structural (NS2B/NS3) proteins, and demonstrate their effectiveness as vaccines. VLPs are produced in a suspension culture of mammalian cells and self-assembled into particles closely resembling Zika …
Redefining Virtue In Shakespeare's Merry Wives Of Windsor, Melissa Rose Piccinonno
Redefining Virtue In Shakespeare's Merry Wives Of Windsor, Melissa Rose Piccinonno
Theses and Dissertations
Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor is a play of social justice. It is a staging of the type of power that women can harness in spaces of extreme limitation and violation. The female characters in this play, specifically Mistress Page and Mistress Ford, are able to use tools of oppression meant to keep them subordinate to men to achieve their personal objectives.

Assessing Preference For Contrafreeloading And Other Feeding Strategies In Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis), Jacinthe Sasson-Yenor
Theses and Dissertations
Giraffe were provided with a choice between easy and difficult food sources containing varying proportions of grain. Individual giraffe showed fixed preferences for contrafreeloading (working for food), eating at the easy source, or following the food distribution. Introduction of the contrafreeloading opportunity also led to a decrease in displacements.

From Sexless To Sexy: Why It Is Time For Human Genetics To Consider And Report Analyses Of Sex, Matthew S. Powers, Phillip H. Smith, Sherry A. Mckee, Marissa A. Ehringer
Publications and Research
Science has come a long way with regard to the consideration of sex differences in clinical and preclinical research, but one field remains behind the curve: human statistical genetics. The goal of this commentary is to raise awareness and discussion about how to best consider and evaluate possible sex effects in the context of large-scale human genetic studies. Over the course of this commentary, we reinforce the importance of interpreting genetic results in the context of biological sex, establish evidence that sex differences are not being considered in human statistical genetics, and discuss how best to conduct and report such …

"La Belle Dame In Bobby Socks":Keatsian Echoes In Lolita, Heajin-Hailie Kim
"La Belle Dame In Bobby Socks":Keatsian Echoes In Lolita, Heajin-Hailie Kim
Theses and Dissertations
This project will explore the various Romantic influences that Nabokov simultaneously draws and draws away from in Lolita. By analyzing the novel in relation to Keats's narrative poems, I will show the ways Nabokov veered from traditional Romantic structures in the trope of courtly love and in images of consumption and consumerism and how he linked the two different notions of consumption in the novel.

The Everyday Food Practices Of Community-Dwelling Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Older Adults, Nevin Cohen, Kristen Cribbs
Publications and Research
Malnutrition during old age is a significant public health issue. Prevailing behavioral and structural senior malnutrition interventions have had marginal success, largely failing to reflect the realities of people's daily lives. This novel study employed Social Practice Theory (SPT) to explore the food practices of an under-researched, yet highly vulnerable, segment of the older adult population—Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) seniors. Four focus groups were conducted with 31 older adult clients and volunteers at a national LGBT social service and advocacy organization. Findings revealed that food practices—far from being mere expressions of individuals' choices or immutable habits—are entities composed …

Older Adults And Mobile Technology: Factors That Enhance And Inhibit Utilization In The Context Of Behavioral Health, Alexis Kuerbis, Adina Mulliken, Frederick Muench, Alison A. Moore, Daniel Gardner
Publications and Research
While numbers and proportions of older adults with behavioral health issues are expected to substantially increase, there is also a widening gap in available services for older adults. Mobile health interventions (mhealth) are a way to address existing barriers to treatment, provide frontline assessment and increase access to services for older adults. Due to perpetuated stereotypes, many assume that older adults do not utilize mobile technology nor will they accept a mHealth intervention. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize contemporary literature from information technology and healthcare regarding: (1) current mobile technology utilization by older adults, particularly in regards …

Study: Students Often Perceived Differently By Race., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

In past columns, I have reported on more than one study that shows that expectations for “brilliance” for women in higher education were much higher than that for males. For example, when a research paper is co-authored by a male and a female the assumption by many is that the male did “the real work.”
Now comes a study showing that there is a similar bias when it comes to students – only this time the differences are based on race.

We present a dataset combining electrophysiology and eye tracking intended as a resource for the investigation of information processing in the developing brain. The dataset includes high-density taskbased and task-free EEG, eye tracking, and cognitive and behavioral data collected from 126 individuals (ages: 6–44). The task battery spans both the simple/complex and passive/active dimensions to cover a range of approaches prevalent in modern cognitive neuroscience. The active task paradigms facilitate principled deconstruction of core components of task performance in the developing brain, whereas the passive paradigms permit the examination of intrinsic functional network activity during varying amounts of external stimulation. …

Although the olfactory sense has always been considered with less interest than the visual, auditive or somatic senses, it does plays a major role in our ordinary life, with important implication in dangerous situations or in social and emotional behaviors. Traditional Diffusion Tensor signal model and related tractography have been used in the past years to reconstruct the cranial nerves, including the olfactory nerve (ON). However, no supplementary information with regard to the pathways of the olfactory network have been provided. Here, by using the more advanced Constrained Spherical Deconvolution (CSD) diffusion model, we show for the first time in …
Toward The Eco-Narrative: Rethinking The Role Of Conflict In Storytelling, Corinne Donly
Toward The Eco-Narrative: Rethinking The Role Of Conflict In Storytelling, Corinne Donly
Publications and Research
Offered as a response to the increasingly popular call within the eco-humanities for stories that will help humankind adapt to catastrophic planetary conditions, this article proposes “the eco-narrative”—an approach to storytelling that strives to compose with, not for, its nonhuman characters. An extension of eco-critical projects that analyze stories for their depictions of nonhumanity, the theoretical research herein brings ecological analysis of narrative to the level of structure. In particular, it problematizes the dominant plot model of conflict/climax/resolution, suggesting that stories motivated by conflict reinforce dualistic and anthropocentric habits for approaching the animal other. Evaluating two narratives concerning the human …

Microglial Location, Morphology, And Cognitive Performance In Mold-Exposed Mice, Karen Marmon
Theses and Dissertations
We examined changes in brain microglia and cognitive performance following mold exposure and doxycycline administration. Neither mold nor doxycycline caused significant changes in microglial location or morphology. While greater numbers of microglia in control-treated mice were linked with improved performance, greater numbers in mold-treated mice were linked to memory impairments.
