Cultural Changes Since Đổi Mới - From Guidelines To Reality, Dung Nguyen-Manh
Cultural Changes Since Đổi Mới - From Guidelines To Reality, Dung Nguyen-Manh
Journal of Urban Culture Research
In Vietnam a couple years before the reform termed Đổi Mới, was a grey picture with serious crises. That is a vital premise, a life and death situation for the Communist Party of Vietnam in the VIth Party Congress in 1986. On the eve of Đổi Mới, Vietnamese culture in general, was in a narrow, dogmatic and ideologically subsidized environment. Yet, since Đổi Mới, the Vietnamese culture and the cultural development, although resulted in achievements, faces a huge challenge: restrictions, not yet suitable for its national conditions, socialist-oriented market economy and international integration. This article provides personal experiences and perspectives …

Selected Piano Works By Klaus Pringsheim’S Students At The Tokyo University Of The Arts : Analysis, Interpretation And Performance Techniques, Panjai Chulapan
Journal of Urban Culture Research
This research article discusses selected piano works by Thai and Japanese composers who studied with Klaus Pringsheim (1883-1972) at the Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan around 1931-37. Pringsheim established the conventional Romantic musical language among his students. A few students, including Prasidh Silapabanleng and Komei Abe, also furthered the idea of integrating vernacular musical language in their compositions. Silapabanleng incorporated Thai traditional melodies in many compositions. Abe also interlaced a koto playing technique in his Piano Sonatina No.3 in C minor which required specific musical knowledge and interpretation in order to convey the performance perfectly. This article focuses …

Language policy functions as a critical instrument in Singapore’s nation building since its independence in the 1960s. This paper intends to examine some major literature in the past fifty years concerning Singapore’s well-known Speak Mandarin Campaign, in order to reveal the chronological development in scholarship. The content of the literature foregrounds paradigm shifts from viewing Mandarin as an identity marker to valuing it as linguistic capital, and from treating identity as a bounded concept to acknowledging its fluidity in the context of globalisation. The evident historical changes in the writing of the studies also reflect shifts in terms of the …
The Same Old Story : The Collapse Of The Semi-Democracy Regime In 1930s Japan And 2006 Thailand, Chai Skulchokchai
The Same Old Story : The Collapse Of The Semi-Democracy Regime In 1930s Japan And 2006 Thailand, Chai Skulchokchai
Asian Review
Both Thailand and Japan have experienced turbulent democratic processes. In addition, both countries are considered as semi-democratic according to Dahl’s framework. It is undeniable that both countries have failed in democratization itself, at one stage, despite being almost 100 years apart, and Lipset’s prerequisite having been met. There were three main factors that led to such occurrences, these being too many offices, which have considerable authority over the electoral force, politicians who side with the non-democratic side for their gain, and the belief that there existed a better alternative form of government. These have been accompanied by six circumstantial similarities …

Asian Review
Asia is a problematic concept. What is Asia, other than a way of setting apart a group of non-Western cultures from the West? It is, historically, culturally, and politically, a diverse region that is artificially constructed through a rather generalized perspective. As a result, we often miss some important details in the development of a national state in Asia that has contributed to Asia’s diverse forms of sociopolitical existences and challenges. Articles appearing in this issue of the Asian Review bring to light some of these missing details and provide readers with clearer insights to Asia’s diversity.

Spatialisation Of Text Worlds: Contrastive Interpretations In P.L. Travers’S Mary Poppins, Kriangkrai Vathanalaoha
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Fictional situations recounted by a narrator instantaneously trigger a mental representation of a text world (Gavins 2007) which aims to explicate how meaning is achieved by readers based on salient theories of stylistics. This study examines how text world creation is established while reading Mary Poppins (Travers 2014). Crucial excerpts are explored to explain how readers perceive events that constitute the narrative. As the author recounts all events through an omniscient perspective, a discourse world is established through schematic data of all participants in the discourse based on common ground information. Deictic shift (Segal 1995) is employed to demonstrate how …

“Bad Luck For The Chinese” : France And The Transit Of War Materiel To China During The Sino-Japanese War (1937–1939), Alexandre Barthel
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
The attitude of France towards the Sino-Japanese War that started in 1937 has given rise to various judgments. Officially neutral, France is often presented as having taken, at least morally, a favorable attitude toward China. Yet the French government had officially prohibited the transit of war materiel en route to China across the Indochinese border. This issue became increasingly important as the Japanese blockade of China progressed and conditioned the capacity of Chiang Kai-shek’s government to continue the fight. The diplomatic archives of the United States, greatly concerned by the situation in China, shed more light on France’s policy in …

Influences Of Béla Bartók’S Piano Compositions On Alberto Ginastera’S Piano Music, Karn Gularnupong, Ampai Buranaprapuk
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This study seeks to reveal the musical relationship between Bartók’s and Ginastera’s piano compositions, showing stylistic conceptualizations of twentieth-century Western art music which held many interesting musical aspects, specifically in the classical piano repertoire. This musicological research employs stylistic analysis and theoretical analysis to shed some light on Bartók’s and Ginastera’s piano music vocabulary. Following this methodology, it is revealed that Ginastera’s compositional language was very much influenced by the highly unique characteristics of Bartók’s. Such characteristics include the axial system, Bulgarian peasant rhythmic dance, bi-modality, intervallic cell (Z-cell, 0167), hexachordal sets of octatonic collections, the symmetrical old Hungarian pentatonic …
On A Path Towards Forgiveness : Garden-Practices And Aesthetics Of Engagement In Tan Twan Eng’S, Darin Pradittatsanee
On A Path Towards Forgiveness : Garden-Practices And Aesthetics Of Engagement In Tan Twan Eng’S, Darin Pradittatsanee
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This paper examines the human-nature relationship in the art of Japanese gardening in Tan Twan Eng’s The Garden of Evening Mists (2012). Drawing upon the aesthetics of Japanese gardening and theories of garden art, it argues that the novel advocates the complementarity of nature and human artifice in gardening. Japanese gardening which is related to the Taoist concept of yinyang and the Buddhist notion of impermanence, together with its principle of shakkei (borrowed landscape), suggests a combination of anthropocentric and ecocentric relationships with nature. Moreover, since Japanese aesthetics is interwoven with ways of living, the paper examines how the female …

Auto-Part Terms In Thai : A Cognitive Semantic Analysis, Unchalee Singnoi Wongwattana
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
This article presents an investigation of Thai auto-part terms in Cognitive Semantics. With at least 1,000 auto-part terms in our data analysis, we argue that the conceptual naming strategy is linguistically effective in understanding auto parts in the Thai culture. Metaphorically, the resemblance operation enhances the degree of lexical richness by enabling the auto-part conceptualization with four source domains: surrounding object, animal, human, and plant. Metonymically, source domains such as shape, function, part, material, position, involved organ, motion, sound and space function in the source-in-target operation, and the category machine/ device appears as a source domain in the target-in-source operation. …
