There are four major dialects of Thai : Northern (Kam Mueng, Yuan), Northeastern (Isan, Lao), Central (Siamese), and Southern (Pak Tai). Standard Thai, the official language of instruction, is based on a prestigious social class dialect of Siamese. In addition to Thai, a great number of other languages are spoken by indigenous peoples, of whom some individuals are literate in their native languages. Foreign languages used in Thailand consist of classical (Pali, Sanskrit, Arabic) and modern (English, Chinese, French, Japanese, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic). English is the most widely used foreign language.

The students who attend the second year EAP course for Commerce and Accountancy at Chulalongkorn University need to acquire and to be able to use many academic skills. Emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills. As part of this course the students have to read academic texts drawn from textbooks, journals and magazines, and they have to write a paragraph (or paragraphs) on various assigned topics. They will have to develop the skills which are learned in their later English courses.

เมืองประชุมพลในประวัติศาสตร์สงครามไทย-พม่า สมัยอยุธยา (พ.ศ. 2106-พ.ศ. 2129) ศึกษากรณีเมืองนครสวรรค์, สุเนตร ชุตินธรานนท์

สงครามไทย-พม่าที่อุบัติขึ้นในช่วงต้นของพุทธศตวรรษที่ 22 นับเป็นเหตุการณ์ครั้งสำคัญใน ประวัติศาสตร์เอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ภาคพื้นทวีป กล่าวได้ว่าลักษณะสงครามที่เป็นสงครามข้ามภูมิภาค ระหว่างสองอาณาจักรที่เป็นใหญ่อยู่คนละฟากของเทือกเขาตะนาวศรีทำให้สงคราม ไทย-พม่า มีขนาดและรูปแบบที่ต่างไปจากสงครามครั้งอื่น ๆ โดยเฉพาะในด้านประสบการณ์สงครามที่ผู้นำอยุธยาเคยเผชิญมาแล้ว อาทิ สงครามแย่งชิงความเป็นใหญ่ระหว่างราชวงศ์อู่ทองและสุพรรณบุรี หรือ สงครามระหว่างอยุธยากับพระนครหลวง และสงครามระหว่างอยุธยากับลานนาประเทศ กล่าวได้ว่าสงครามไทย-พม่าไม่เพียงอาศัยไพร่พลและ อาวุธยุทโธปกรณ์เป็นจำนวนมหาศาล แต่ยังเป็นสงครามยืดเยื้อที่แผ่ปริมณฑลออกไปอย่างกว้างขวางกว่า สงครามครั้งใดๆ ภายใต้เงื่อนไขดังกล่าวเป็นเหตุให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ส่งผลกระทบในวงกว้างต่อฐานะและ ความสำคัญของเมืองในขอบขัณฑสีมาของอยุธยาที่ปริมณฑลของสงครามขยายตัวไปถึง ทำให้เมืองที่ครั้งหนึ่ง เคยเป็นเมืองศูนย์กลางในทางการค้าและวัฒนธรรมได้กลายสภาพเป็นเมืองทางยุทธศาสตร์ โดยฉับพลัน รวมถึงกรุงศรีอยุธยาเองด้วย แต่ในที่นี้จะขอศึกษาเฉพาะกรณีเมืองนครสวรรค์ซึ่งมีหลักฐานระบุอย่างเด่นชัด ว่าเป็นเมืองยุทธศาสตร์ที่สำคัญเมืองหนึ่งในช่วงสงครามไทย-พม่าในฐานะ "เมืองชุมพล" หรือ "ประชุมพล"

ถ้าจะมีคำถามว่าภายในช่วง 3-4 ทศวรรษที่ผ่านมานี้ แบบการ (model) ที่อธิบายเหตุการณ์ แบบใดเป็นที่นิยมมากที่สุด คำตอบที่ได้ก็คงจะเป็นแบบที่คาร์ล พอพเพอร์ (Karl Popper) ได้เสนอขึ้นมา และคาร์ล เฮมเพล (Carl Hempel) ได้พัฒนาต่อมาในภายหลัง แบบการนี้อาจเรียกว่า deductive-nomological model ก็ได้ (deductive หมายถึงการสรุปแบบนิรนัย ส่วน nomological หมายถึงการ อธิบายแบบที่ใช้กฎสากลประจักษ์ (universal empirical law) เป็นข้ออ้าง) หรือเรียกว่า covering law model ก็ได้ (หมายความว่าจะอธิบายเหตุการณ์โดยทำให้เราสามารถเห็นว่า เหตุการณ์นั้น ๆ อยู่ภายใต้ กฎสากลประจักษ์ที่แบบการนี้ใช้เป็นข้ออ้าง) แบบการนี้นักปรัชญาเริ่มใช้เป็นครั้งแรกตามแบบนักวิทยาศาสตร์ ที่อธิบายเหตุการณ์ธรรมชาติ โดยการอธิบายที่เรียกว่า deductive nomological และนักปรัชญาที่สนใจใน ประวัติศาสตร์และสังคมศาสตร์ เห็นว่าควรใช้การอธิบายแบบนี้กับงานของตนด้วยเช่นกัน

ความเข้าใจผิดของนักตรรกวิทยาวิภาษ เกี่ยวกับตรรกวิทยาแบบแผน, ปรีชา ช้างขวัญยืน

ข้อโต้แย้งประการหนึ่งที่นักปรัชญาฝ่ายมาร์กซิสม์พยายามเสนอก็คือ การแย้งตรรกวิทยาแบบแผน (formal logic) และการเสนอตรรกวิทยาวิภาษ (Dialectic Logic) ผู้เขียนได้เคยพูดเรื่องนี้ไว้ครั้งหนึ่ง แล้วในการสัมมนาปรัชญาที่จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัยในปี 2525 แต่เป็นที่น่าเสียดายที่การวิจารณ์บทความครั้ง นั้นมิได้นำไปสู่การอภิปรายในตัวประเด็นและเนื้อหาที่แท้จริงของบทความ เมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้ผู้เขียนได้อ่านบท ความของ A.S. Bogomolor ซึ่งตีพิมพ์ใน Philosophy in the USSR : Problems of Dialectical Materialism เรื่อง Dialectical Contradiction and its solution concerning the central problem of Dialectical Logic. บทความนี้เขียนเรื่อง Dialectic Logic ลึกซึ้งกว่า นังสือที่ผู้เขียนนำมาวิเคราะห์ในบทความสัมมนาคราวที่แล้ว แต่ก็มีความคิดพื้นฐานเดียวกัน ผู้เขียนเห็นว่า ตรรกวิทยาเป็นรากฐานสำคัญประการหนึ่งในระบบการหาความรู้ของมนุษย์ จึงนำข้อโต้แย้งในบทความนั้นมา วิเคราะห์ โดยมีความคิดพื้นฐานว่าตรรกวิทยาวิภาษตามที่บทความนั้นเสนอไม่อาจแย้งตรรกวิทยาแบบแผนได้ โดยเฉพาะในประเด็นเรื่อง contradiction และ negation ซึ่งมีพื้นฐานความคิดมาจากตรรกวิทยาของ อริสโตเติล ในการวิจารณ์จะพูดในประเด็นสําคัญสอดคล้องโดยลําดับกับบทความของ A.S. Bogomolov.

ระยะเวลาหลังจากที่ไทยทำสนธิสัญญาเบาริงกับอังกฤษ ใน พ.ศ. 2398 สมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 เป็นต้นมาจนถึงสิ้นรัชกาลที่ 5 ใน พ.ศ. 2453 นั้น เป็นช่วงเวลาที่มีชาวจีนและชาวตะวันตกเดินทางเข้ามากรุงเทพฯ มากขึ้นกว่าเดิมอย่างเห็นได้ชัด สำหรับชาวจีนในเวลานั้น เมืองจีนกำลังเกิดภัยพิบัติจากการสู้รบ แย่งชิงอำนาจทางการเมือง ตลอดจนเกิดทุกขภัยทางธรรมชาติต่าง ๆ อันนำมาซึ่งความอดอยากยากจน ด้วยเหตุนี้ชาวจีนเป็นจำนวนไม่น้อย จึงต้องเดินทางออกไปแสวงหาที่ทำกินแห่งใหม่นอกประเทศ ส่วนชาวตะวันตกนั้นเมื่อบ้านเมืองของตนได้เข้าสู่สภาวะความสงบภายหลังการสิ้นสุดสงครามนโปเลียนแล้ว ก็ได้มีการ เดินทางออกนอกยุโรป เพื่อแสวงหาอำนาจในดินแดนอื่นอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ทั้งนี้ เป็นผลมาจากความต้องการแหล่ง วัตถุดิบ และแหล่งระบายสินค้าที่กำลังทวีมากขึ้นภายหลังการปฏิวัติอุตสาหกรรม รวมทั้งแนวความคิดจักรวรรดินิยมที่กำลังมีบทบาทสำคัญในเวลานั้น ขณะเดียวกันทางเมืองไทยได้เป็นช่วงระยะเวลาที่เปิดความ สัมพันธ์ทางการทูตและการค้ากับต่างประเทศมากขึ้น อีกทั้งมีการปรับปรุงประเทศให้ทันสมัยในด้านต่าง ๆ ในการนี้จำเป็นต้องอาศัยวิทยาการ เทคโนโลยี ผู้ประกอบการ และแรงงานจากภายนอกประเทศด้วย สภาพ การณ์เช่นนี้จึงทำให้ชาวจีนและชาวตะวันตกที่เดินทางออกนอกประเทศของตนได้เข้ามาในกรุงเทพฯ ซึ่งเป็น ศูนย์กลางการปกครอง เศรษฐกิจ และสังคม ในเวลานั้นเป็นจำนวนมาก กรุงเทพฯ จึงประกอบด้วยกลุ่มชน ที่มีบทบาทและฐานะที่แตกต่างกันเป็น 3 กลุ่มสําคัญ คือ ชาวไทย ชาวจีน และชาวตะวันตก ซึ่งได้มีที่ ตั้งชุมชนของตนอยู่ในส่วนต่าง ๆ ของเมืองกรุงเทพฯ
