Two of each E. coli and Salmonella isolates exhibiting low halquinol MIC (8 and 16 µg/ml, respectively) and susceptible to antibiotics tested were selected for in vitro stepwisehalquinol exposure experiment. Another E. coli (n=19) and Salmonella (n=6) isolates with high halquinol MICs (16-64 and 32-64 µg/ml, respectively) containing plasmids were used for transferability testing of halquinol resistanceencoding gene(s) using filter mating method. In vitro exposure to subinhibitory concentrations of halquinol promoted neither resistance to …

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine parvovirus (PPV), and porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infections associated with fetal losses in 10 commercial swine herds in Thailand. Samples were collected from 100 sows and included 25 aborted fetuses, 35 mummified fetuses, and 40 stillborn piglets. The average parity number of the sows was 2.8 ± 2.4, ranging from 0 to 11. Fetal age was determined based on either the day of abortion or estimated using crown-rump length, and categorized as ≥70 days. Organs from each case were pooled, homogenized, and tested …

Pneumonia in calves is caused by a complex association between host, pathogen, and environmental factors, and it is challenging to detect the subclinical stages. Therefore, it is crucial to accurately and rapidly identify calves with pneumonia on farms to provide appropriate treatment in a timely manner. In the present study, we focused on the frequency components of lung sounds to distinguish calves with and without pneumonia, without the need for veterinary expertise. In addition, we evaluated the pathogenesis of pneumonia by clarifying the relationship between the frequency components of lung sounds and lung ultrasound findings in calves. Although further case …

Ofloxacin, a second-generation fluoroquinolone, is a relatively rare but documented cause of fixed drug eruption (FDE), a localized cutaneous hypersensitivity reaction marked by recurrent, well-demarcated erythematous patches or macules that may develop into blisters upon re-exposure to the offending agent. The underlying mechanism is immune-mediated, involving T-cell activation, cytokine release, and keratinocyte apoptosis. A 5-year-old boy weighing 15 kg was prescribed Ofloxacin syrup (7.5 ml twice daily) and Paracetamol suspension (5 ml twice daily) for suspected enteric fever. Within two days, he developed several annular erythematous lesions on his hands and back, associated with intense itching, raising suspicion of a …

Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte, Monocyte-To-Lymphocyte, And Platelet-To-Lymphocyte Ratio In Acute Hospitalized Patients With Schizophrenia, Apichan Dangrungroj, Mayteewat Chiddaycha
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Schizophrenia has been increasingly linked to inflammation. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have emerged as potential indicators of systemic inflammation.
Objectives: The objectives are to compare NLR, MLR, and PLR between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls, and to investigate the factors associated with NLR. Methods: This retrospective study included 102 sex- and age-matched patients hospitalized with schizophrenia and control subjects. NLR, MLR, and PLR were calculated from the Complete Blood Count (CBC) results and compared between groups. Sociodemographic data and clinical characteristics were analyzed using multiple linear regression to identify …

Background: Ketamine is a substance that is commonly abused, especially in young adults. Blood and urinary ketamine profiles are important for the interpretation of causes of death. Objective: To compare blood and urinary ketamine profiles between different causes of death in Thai postmortem cases.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 40 Thai postmortem cases whose urine samples tested positive for ketamine. Sex, age, cause of death, manner of death, blood alcohol concentration (BAC), and concomitant drugs found with ketamine in subjects were recorded for each case. Blood and urinary ketamine and its two metabolites (norketamine and dehydronorketamine …
