New genera and species of the climbing perch and cyprinine fish were discovered from the Oligocene strata in northern Tibet. On the other hand, all their extant close relatives live in the tropical regions of Asia and Africa. These discoveries not only are significant for the phylogeny and zoogeography of fishes, but also imply that the hinterland of the Tibet area was a warm and humid lowland at 26 Ma as suggested by the co-existing plant assemblage including palms and golden rain trees among others, indicating that the warm and humid air current of the Indian Ocean could flow deeply …

The westerlies and the Indian monsoon are the primary atmospheric circulations impacting climate and environmental changes on the Tibetan Plateau. Our results reveal that both the intensity and extent influenced by these two circulations display distinct spatial and temporal patterns. Based on both the in-situ oxygen stable isotope in precipitation and simulation from high resolution isotopic GCM models, three modes of interaction between the westerlies and the Indian monsoon (the westerlies model; the transitional model; and the monsoonal model) were founded on the Tibetan Plateau. Paleomagnetic and geochronological studies conducted in the North Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks indicate firstly, the North Qiangtang block was situated in the latitudinal band of 21.9°±4.7°S in southern hemisphere 297 Ma ago, ruling out the long-lasting working hypothesis on the North Qiangtang block of its Laurasian origin, and secondly, attest North Qiangtang's Gondwana origin much earlier and subsequently started its northward drifting journey after rifted from northern margin of the Gondwanaland. The southern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is located in a transitional zone between the plateau and the South Asia Sub-continent. It is also an intersectional region of the westerlies and the South Asia Summer Monsoon (SASM). This region is quite sensitive to the changes of global climate system and regional environment. Combined with satellite remote sensing and field observations, the inter-annual variability of natural and human geography conditions of the margin have been investigated.
