A Family Budget Simulation For Use In Secondary Level Consumer Economics Class, Robert James Barrett

A family budget simulation was designed and field-tested using pretest and posttest comparisons of fifty-six students and posttest only comparisons of one hundred sixty-three students to measure student achievement. The results showed substantial pretest to posttest gains but no significant differences in posttest only averages between students using the simulation and those not using the simulation. Recommendations for improving the design and application of the simulation are discussed.

Simulations For Teaching Concepts On Washington State, Cynthia Louise Buettgenbach

Simulation lessons and materials were developed to teach concepts on Washington State to a classroom of fourth grade students. The activities in which the students participated were the following:

1) planned trips to the five geographic regions of Washington State;

2) became part of an Indian tribe and held a meeting with other tribes at Sacajawea Park;

3) played a board game, traveling with Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Ocean;

4) held mock state elections and one legislative session.

Students showed an increased interest in social studies through the simulations.

Encouraging Academic Interests Outside School, Randall David Hauff

The intention of this project is to develop a middle school extracurricular program which encourages academic excellence. Providing an enrichment program was the stated goal of a community- staff meeting on district priorities. A questionnaire sent to area schools and a thorough review of available literature revealed no existing program to use as a role model . The Corps of Discovery program attempts to meet the need for encouraging and rewarding academic excellence.

A Teacher’S Guide To Improve Vocabulary Development Through Strategies Using Pictures And Specific Written Practice Lessons, Diane Marie Danklefsen

A vocabulary enrichment program of one hundred and twenty words for use at the third grade level was developed. The program included thirty weekly sets of formal written lessons to provide the opportunity for students to practice the meaning or multiple meanings of each word. A picture was used to represent the meaning or multiple meanings of each word.

Study To Determine The Effect Of Graduation Requirement Changes On Student Performance, Attitudes, And Retention In School, David R. Betzing

On July 31, 1979, the Yakima School Board of School District 7, Yakima, Washington, approved a graduation policy change increasing the total number of credits required from forty-eight to sixty-six. This change required that eighteen credits be transferred from grade nine of the junior high school setting. This study attempts to assess the impact of the change upon the performance and attitudes of ninth grade students. Indications are that students accepted the changes positively, felt they were working harder, and, in two schools showed a decrease in the failure rate. This project presents the development of a parent and student handbook for Sunnyside Christian School. The handbook was designed to clearly define the philosophy, basis, admissions policy, rules, regulations, procedures, and general information important to the parents and students. This is the first comprehensive handbook in the thirty-three year history of the school. The handbook was developed with input from faculty, Board, parents, and supporting groups within the school community. Handbooks from other schools, private and public, were used to aid the development of the project. The need for and delivery of programs in our public schools to educate elementary students K-3 about Exceptional children was studied. An Instructional packet of ideas, resources, and activities was presented that could be used in an elementary classroom K-3, to help children overcome negative attitudes toward the handicapped and to recognize the rights of the handicapped individual to pursue a normal life.

A Simulation Games Approach To Suppliment The Teaching Of Basic Economics Concepts In Elementary School, David L. Spies

A year-long simulation game was created to facilitate the teaching of basic economics in a sixth and seventh grade middle school. The game could be adapted to implementation at lower grade levels. The students built two, table-top cities. They established a money system and were paid for positive behavior and effort. With their earned income and with loans from a bank, they purchased land, built homes, invested in business franchises, engaged in trade, and worked collectively to finance and build government projects and services. This paper presents a study of certain attitudes and opinions held by a selected group of High School students. The information thus gained has been used to determine how the students see themselves in their school, home and community environment. From this data, inferences are drawn concerning concepts that influence career or educational choices, The values of High School students are remarkably homogeneous, considering the variety of their backgrounds and their relatively unrestricted opportunities for freedom of thought and personal development, or lack of it.
