An Application Of A Revised Morrissett's Curriculum Analysis System To A High School English Program, Eldon Richard Loewe
An Application Of A Revised Morrissett's Curriculum Analysis System To A High School English Program, Eldon Richard Loewe
All Master's Theses
The problem presented in this thesis is threefold. Taken together, these items present the bulk of work for any person attempting curriculum evaluation at the local level:
1. Meaningful evaluative information must be obtained. Instead of glib and generalized assumptions about what ought to be, one should achieve specific information relevant to the researcher as well as his departmental colleagues.
2. The information must relate to other studies so that a larger curriculum analysis will result. If the soundest method of national evaluation is to create concrete building blocks locally, these individual studies must mesh to provide something larger and …
A History Of The Events Leading To The Establishment Of The First State Normal School In America, Harold E. Ring
A History Of The Events Leading To The Establishment Of The First State Normal School In America, Harold E. Ring
All Master's Theses
During the decades of the 1820's and 1830's, educators in this country studied the European schools where the principles of Johann H. Pestalozzi (1746-1827), Friedrick Froebel (1782-1852), and Emanuel Fellenberg (1771-1844) had been put into practice with favorable results. The Prussian normal schools established by Frederick the Great were some of the best in the world. American educators came back with glowing reports of the progress Europeans were making in this direction. By 1838, due to the efforts of James Carter (1795-1849) and Horace Mann (179 6-1859), and because of the generosity of a Boston merchant, the Massachusetts legislature was …

A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders
All Master's Theses
Children come to school speaking the language of their speech community. For some children, the language in their speech community is a variety of English that differs from standard English or what may be called "school English." These children may experience great difficulties in speaking standard English. This problem is one of social class dialect rather than regional language variation. The purpose of this study is to describe certain characteristics in which the language of a class of third grade Negro children differs from standard English.

Sex Differences In The Sixth Grade: An In-Depth Study Of A Neglected Learning Factor In Reading, Gail Purvis Johnson
All Master's Theses
Concern for the differences between the sexes in the reading area has prompted the following questions:
1. If there is an obvious difference between the sexes in the area of reading achievement, why is it that sex differences are not considered a pertinent learning factor?
2. What factors might be involved in causation and therefore, worth investigating?
3. More specifically, how do boys differ from girls in their response to the situation called ''learning to read?" Is there a relevant developmental or related neurological difference?
4. What factors within the school situation might be significant? Do reading programs accommodate possible …

Brainstorm: A Highly Competitive Game And Its Effect On Fifth Grade Science And Social Studies Achievement, John William Meyers
All Master's Theses
In recent years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the effectiveness of games. Some educators believe games have many intrinsic values to facilitate learning and achievement. Others believe the competition involved from participating in games is detrimental to some student's emotional status. No sound research has been conducted in relation of games to achievement. The purpose of this study is to determine whether a highly competitive game called Brainstorm will serve as a media toward motivation and will improve achievement in science and social studies at the fifth grade level.

Past And Possible Future Preferences For 8-Mm And 16-Mm Projectors: First-Class School Districts Washington State, Milton E. Ruth
All Master's Theses
Educators recognize the contributions motion picture films make in the classroom learning situation. However, the problem of determining budget expenditures necessitates a continual evaluation of the utility of specific equipment. This study was an attempt to ascertain the past and future preferences for eight millimeter and sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors. For purposes of this investigation, the following null hypothesis was used: Given a hypothetical grant, there would be no significant difference in preference for purchasing eight millimeter motion picture projectors over sixteen millimeter motion picture projectors by first-class school districts in the state of Washington.

Advertising Media As A Source For Painting Iconography, Betty Thompkins
All Master's Theses
One of the phenomena of twentieth century America is the enormous growth in size and influence of the advertising industry. It is impossible to avoid the visual and aural images of sultry women and sophisticated men (and various portions of their anatomy), who order, persuade and cajole the public through the media of television, newspapers and magazines. It was the purpose of this thesis (1) to use these advertisements as a source of visual imagery for a series of drawings and paintings; (2) to utilize the resulting ambiguity of the image when taken out of a commercial context and put …

Education In The Marshall Islands Under United Nations Trusteeship Administered By The United States, Vernell C. Pinson
All Master's Theses
The lack of a handbook in the schools of the Marshalls District has resulted in valuable information and history being lost in each successive turnover of personnel in the Trust Territory. Every year brings a group of new recruits into the educational system. This particular handbook contains valuable information on the past history and specific terminology required of one who will teach in this area. Special emphasis was given to the educational system in the Marshall Islands.
