World History, "What's It All About.", Harold E. Barto Feb 1935

World History, "What's It All About.", Harold E. Barto

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Opinion seems to be well divided as to the shortcomings of World History. Some believe that it is a mistake to attempt to cover so much history in the time allotted. Others contend that poor teaching is the greatest obstacle. Obviously, both views have some merit. However, there is another reason that is not generally given that may come nearer reaching the source of the trouble. It may be that the starting point in World History is too far removed from the student's interest.

Training Teachers For Emergency Nursery Schools In Washington, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The work on the emergency nursery school program in Washington started on January 6, 1934, in the State Department of Education. The purposes of the program as outlined by the state supervisor are pertinent here. (1) To serve the emergency needs of preschool children and their parents who are suffering from current social and economic difficulties. (2) To carry improved methods of child care and guidance into the home. (3) To employ needy qualified workers. ( 4) To carry on an educational and health program for children and their parents. Making A Teachers College Program Comprehensive, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The purpose of the undergraduate teachers college is to educate young men and women for teaching in the elementary and secondary schools. Curriculum makers should arrange the courses of instruction and activities so that the student will be directed to do those things which he will be called upon to do in his profession and in his life after school. The curriculum of the teachers college is the fountainhead from which new ideas and materials for the public schools should flow. A heavy responsibility has been delegated to it.

Arrowhead Making In The Ginkgo Petrified Forest, George F. Beck

In a sense we must give the Indians credit for being the original discoverers of these fossil forests of Central Washington. Not that I have been able to run down any legends or traditions regarding fossil logs or any certainty that the Indians recognized them as trees in stone. My opinion is that they could not have failed to recognize them as trees. Be that as it may, they long ago took recognition of the fact that certain logs were to be prized as the source of flint for their arrow-heads.

Art And The New Leisure, Pauline Johnson Nov 1934

Art And The New Leisure, Pauline Johnson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The new order into which society has been placed during recent months produces problems which were unthought of before that time, and perhaps the greatest of these problems is the one which has to do with the creation of surplus time for the worker. Rightly controlled this will add to the happiness and welfare not only of the person concerned but to civilization as a whole. This need will be met in many ways--through sports, amusements, self-development, etc., but I wonder how many have realized the place that fine arts can be made to fill at this time.

Qualities Of Leadership Essential To The Presidency Of A Teachers College, Robert E. Mcconnell Nov 1934

Qualities Of Leadership Essential To The Presidency Of A Teachers College, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

The president of the modern American teachers college is charged with the ultimate responsibility for the outcome of all of the activities of the institution over which he has jurisdiction. The selection of a president is the greatest single duty of the board of trustees. To him they look for the successful carrying out of all policies and for the conception and formulation of a great majority of them. To him they look for most of the leadership in their deliberations as well as for the subsequent execution of institutional affairs. He is the pivot around which revolve the activities …

Where Are We Going? — An Impartial Review Of Nra, Robert E. Mcconnell

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Few if any matters have received the attention of more speakers and writers than the National Recovery Act. Virtually each has gone into the subject from a different angle and each wound up at a different place. No exception to this rule was displayed when Dr. Robert E. McConnell, president Washington State Normal School, Ellensburg, said the following at the annual meeting...
