Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
The creative writing project being presented is my novel-in-progress, Epiphany. Epiphany is comprised of a collage of creative writing forms including sonnets, villanelles, sestinas, vignettes, pantoums, and fiction pieces. Inspired by Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street, my novel-in-progress focuses on the evolution of the main character self-identity as she and her peers grow up in Tacoma Washington. This evolution takes place Through Iman, a young Afro-Caribbean American, coping with anxiety while trying to understand her dysfunctional yet unbreakable family; Tiffany, a young African- American portraying the consequence of daughters who are left orphans, growing up in the urban …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)
Gardner and Gardner (1989) cross-fostered the chimpanzees, Tatu, Dar, Moja, and Washoe, as deaf human children immersed in American Sign Language. Opportunities to look through picture books, magazines, and photos have been a part of the chimpanzees’ daily routine since early on in their lives. The items chimpanzees choose to communicate about may indicate preferences or show flexible use of signs. This study performed a content analysis on the pictorial items the chimpanzees are signing about. Sign logs, an archival database, contain records of the chimpanzees’ use of signs. We selected all instances of chimpanzee signed interactions with magazines, pictures, …

Online Instructor's Use Of Audio Feedback To Increase Social Presence And Student Satisfaction, Laura Portolese, Robert Trumpy
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
This study investigates the impact of written group feedback, versus audio feedback, based upon four student satisfaction measures in the online classroom environment. Undergraduate students in the control group were provided both individual written feedback and group written feedback, while undergraduate students in the experimental treatment group were provided both individual written feedback and audio group feedback. Using a one-tailed t-test, the four student satisfaction measures were analyzed and one was found to be significant for students’ perception that the instructor seemed genuinely concerned with whether students learned. The authors believe the study, when combined with their previous research, has …

Connecting With Families Of Poverty Handbook, Rebecca Christine Oren
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project is to create a handbook describing services available in the Sumner School District and researched based practices for elementary administrators and teachers to use when working with students and families of poverty. The McKinney-Vento Act in the United States protects families to ensure that all students have immediate access to school-linked services, including free breakfast and lunch, as well as transportation needs for getting to and from school. This handbook includes descriptions and contact information for local support organizations that administrators and teachers can additionally partner with to create supportive learning environments within their school …

Understanding Ultimate Use Data And Its Implication For Digital Library Management: A Case Study, Michele Reilly, Santi Thompson
Understanding Ultimate Use Data And Its Implication For Digital Library Management: A Case Study, Michele Reilly, Santi Thompson
Library Scholarship
Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for over two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. Most articles written on digital library use focus on users’ search retrieval needs and behavior. Few mention how digital library patrons use the images they request. Like many digital libraries, archives, and special collections, the University of Houston Digital Library makes high resolution images available to their patrons. Image delivery is achieved by an automated system, titled the Digital Cart Service. An unexpected benefit of the Digital Cart …

Continued interest in the chemistry of Dalea spp. led to investigation of Dalea searlsiae, a plant native to areas of the western United States. Methanol extractions of D. searlsiae roots and subsequent chromatographic fractionation afforded the new prenylated and geranylated flavanones malheurans A–D (1–4) and known flavanones (5 and 6). Known rotenoids (7 and 8) and isoflavones (9 and 10) were isolated from aerial portions. Structure determination of pure compounds was accomplished primarily by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopy. The absolute configurations of compounds 1–5, 7 …
