Cultural Risk Factors For Teen Pregnancy In Hispanic/Latina Women: A Qualitative Study, Nia Saldana
Cultural Risk Factors For Teen Pregnancy In Hispanic/Latina Women: A Qualitative Study, Nia Saldana
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Teen pregnancy remains a significant social issue in the United States, disproportionately affecting Hispanic/Latina adolescents. Research is highly needed to understand the factors contributing to high rates of teen pregnancy among Hispanics/Latinas. In 2020, Latina teen birth rates (25.3 per 1,000 females) exceeded that of White teens (11.4 per 1,000 teens) by a large margin (CDC, 2020). The purpose of this study is to explore the cultural factors, particularly religion and familial influences, on the high rates of teen pregnancy among Hispanics/Latinas. Qualitative data was collected using in-depth interviews with seven adult Hispanic/Latina women who have experienced teen pregnancy. …
Student Mental Health And Student Engagement In Higher Education: Identifying The Mechanisms, Sailesh Maharjan
Student Mental Health And Student Engagement In Higher Education: Identifying The Mechanisms, Sailesh Maharjan
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Students’ mental health is critical for their personal and educational engagement, particularly among First Generation College Students (FGCSs). There is a growing need in higher education to openly discuss mental health challenges, emphasizing the importance of understanding available resources and campus culture in influencing student well-being. Adopting a salutogenic perspective, this study highlights the necessity of viewing student mental health as an ongoing process rather than a one-time task. In this context, the study examines the relationship between student mental health and overall engagement in higher education, specifically focusing on the roles of a sense of belonging, psychological flexibility, and …

The opioid epidemic has increased exponentially in severity across the United States in the last decade. This research project was conducted to understand the needs of a vulnerable population (opioid users) at the local level. The research sought to answer the following question: How do low-income individuals in Santa Cruz County cope with opioid use? The purpose is to identify the most common coping strategies used by this population, so that social workers and others in helping professions in Santa Cruz County will have a fuller picture of what this vulnerable demographic is facing. The data for this research was …
Odd Girls, Pulp Fiction And Lesbians, Natalie Aronson
Odd Girls, Pulp Fiction And Lesbians, Natalie Aronson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
1957’s Odd Girl Out, a novel written by Ann Bannon, reminds readers, past, present and future, of the ever-growing need for positive queer representation. This project’s main goal is to take a look at the genre of Pulp Fiction novels of the 1950s, and examine how queer representation – specifically lesbian representation – has been written. Paul Thompson’s Masculinity in Lesbian “Pulp” Fiction is a text I use throughout, as it not only examines the genre overall, but also delves into Bannon’s ever-growing impact, providing much-needed context for the novels. While the genre of Pulp Fiction novels, queer or not, …

Shattered Campuses: School Shootings And Identity Formation, Daniel Alarcon
Shattered Campuses: School Shootings And Identity Formation, Daniel Alarcon
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
School shootings have become a pervasive issue in the U.S., impacting both students and educators. Since the Columbine tragedy, an estimated 187,000 students have experienced campus shootings, reflecting the tragic and often overwhelming nature of this phenomenon (Cox & Rich, 2018). Educators are tasked with devising structured responses to these incidents, facing the challenge of balancing safety with educational goals. While quantitative research on school safety is abundant, limited qualitative insight exists into how school leaders interpret data to design effective safety protocols tailored to their unique environments. This study aims to explore how individual schools perceive their vulnerability, prepare …

Urban-Rural Dynamics And Dui Fatalities In The Inland Empire: A Neural Network Analysis Of Traffic Safety Disparities, Armando Ceja-Lua
Urban-Rural Dynamics And Dui Fatalities In The Inland Empire: A Neural Network Analysis Of Traffic Safety Disparities, Armando Ceja-Lua
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study examines the disproportionately high traffic fatality rates in California's Inland Empire region through neural network analysis of over 500,000 accidents (2013-2022). We argue that the Inland Empire's unique hybrid urban-rural landscape creates a multiplicative risk environment unlike other California regions. Our analysis reveals that San Bernardino County's fatality rate (1.920 per 100 million VMT) significantly exceeds neighboring regions, with alcohol-impaired driving fatalities (0.586) substantially higher than California's average (0.390). Neural network models (92% validation accuracy) identify pedestrian-involved collisions (correlation value 0.164) and alcohol involvement (0.075) as the strongest predictors of fatality in urban areas, while rural crash patterns …

The Effects Of Police Brutality Upon Marginalized Communities: An Exploratory Study, Tera S. Person
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background: A 2018 study revealed that members of the African American community and those from marginalized communities experience sadness, depression, anxiety and an overall decrease in mental health after the shooting or killing of an unarmed African American or Latino by a white police officer in their city or state (Bor et al., 2018). Experiencing, witnessing or hearing stories of others who have been victims of police brutality has contributed to increased levels of anxiety when anticipating an encounter with law enforcement or when needing assistance from law enforcement (Alang et al., 2017; Davis & Jackson, 2023). Voices From The Margins: Women Of Color On Diversity Policies And Workplace Culture, Aparna Kasturi
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Women of Color (WoC) in corporate leadership experience distinct problems that stem from the intersection of race, gender, and class. Despite the extensive implementation of diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) policies in companies, these initiatives often emphasize quantitative metrics over genuine lived experiences. Many of the DEIA policies seem cosmetic and do not tackle the fundamental challenges faced by WoC such as the "glass ceiling," "sticky floor," and exclusion from sponsorship networks; how the lack of an intersectional approach in policy development might overlook the subtle biases. By placing the voices and lived experiences of WoC at the center, …

ABSTRACT
This qualitative study explores the impact of looping on elementary educators, focusing on how teaching the same group of students for multiple years influences instructional practices, professional growth, and classroom dynamics. Using one-on-one interviews with seven experienced educators, this research identifies three overarching themes: (a) teachers’ feelings of autonomy, (b) the relationships established with students and families, and (c) familiarity with curriculum and expectations. Findings suggest that looping makes teachers more effective by fostering deeper relationships, increasing confidence in instructional strategies, and improving job satisfaction. Participants reported that continuity in teaching led to stronger classroom communities, improved student engagement, …
