Perceived Maternal Stress, Coping Strategies, And Suggested Interventions In Caring For Children With Both Medical Complexities And Developmental Delays, Lisa Poff

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This qualitative study highlights caretaker stress and coping in mothers of children with complex medical needs in addition to developmental delays. Areas of stress were complex, affecting emotional health, careers, and even vacations. Burnout theory was utilized to address the increased stress levels in these mothers. However, this theory was supplemented with Stress and Coping theory after qualitative data analysis as there were other factors that allowed these mothers to persevere—in particular, a type of coping identified as “meaning-based coping,” where situations are positively re-appraised and ordinary events are imbued with positive meaning. The mothers expressed their desire for more …

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Reviews of the literature have confirmed that Social StoriesTM can be an effective intervention for individuals with ASD. Recently, researchers have begun to investigate the presentation of Social StoriesTM using technology, with results suggesting that Social StoriesTM presented through technology are a promising avenue for practice and research. In this study, a multiple baseline across participants design was used with four male 7-9 year old students with ASD to determine whether an iPad- based Social StoryTM would decrease the number of teacher redirects required by the participants in order to attend to a group lesson. Effect sizes were calculated using …

Three middle-school-aged students with intellectual disability as well as three peers without disabilities participated in this investigation. The intervention consisted of two 15-step task analyses: one for sending an email, and the second for replying to an email, least to most prompting, and constant time delay. Results showed students’ improved ability to send and reply to emails on an iPad with the support of picture-based task analyses. Implications for practice and future research …

Scaffolding Middle And High School Students’ Engineering Design Experiences: Quality Problem-Scopeing Promoting Successful Solutions, Andrew Hughes, Cameron Denson Jan 2021

Scaffolding Middle And High School Students’ Engineering Design Experiences: Quality Problem-Scopeing Promoting Successful Solutions, Andrew Hughes, Cameron Denson

Educational Leadership & Technology Faculty Publications

Highly proficient expert engineers begin the iterative process of design by thoroughly investigating the design problem. Engineering students are often distracted by surface details, leading to a faulty conception of the problem and inappropriate solution strategies. Adequate problem-scoping is arguably the most important step in the design process. To address this issue, the researchers developed an instructional framework to help teachers scaffold students’ cognitive and metacognitive processes during the problem-scoping phase of a design challenge. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate the impact that scaffolded instruction related to the SCOPE process had on students’ solution success during …
