Raising Awareness Of Empathy And Its Role In Teacher-Student Relationships, Jessica Coles-Black
Raising Awareness Of Empathy And Its Role In Teacher-Student Relationships, Jessica Coles-Black
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study navigates through the theory of emotional intelligence, which is premised on self-regulation, emotion regulation, and drilling down to the core skills of empathy. These constructs significantly impact teacher-student relationships, which, in turn, influences academics, socio-emotional learning, behavior and the educational trajectory . This mixed methods study examined the importance of teacher awareness of the subconstructs of empathy and how this influences their relationships with students. Investigating the impact of the subconstructs of empathy as outlined by Decety and Jackson (2016) and their correlation to the subconstructs of teacher-student relationships (Pianta, 1992), the study demonstrated important findings for cultivating …

Examining The Impact Of Transformational Leadership On Employee Development And Performance: The Role Of Inspiration And Trust, Kayla Pham
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Transformational leaders are known to encourage, motivate, and engage followers in ways that enhance organizational outcomes. Researchers like Bernard Bass expanded on transformational leadership after James V. Downton introduced the idea. Bernard Bass was critical since he found ways to measure the success of transformational leadership (Givens, 2008). The four major principles of the transformational leadership theory are idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration (Bass, 1985). This study aims to determine whether transformational leaders increase employee development and performance through their ability to inspire and trust in their followers. Variables such as performance, employee development, inspiration, and …

First-Year Experiences Of Lgbtq+ Students: Belongingness, Resilience, And Utilization Of Resources On Campus, Sarina Sauceda
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Entering college brings independence; however, it also presents new challenges. Navigating young adulthood, with academic/social pressures, makes the first-year increasingly difficult (Alessi et al., 2017). LGBTQ+ students are at heightened risk of negative mental health outcomes (e.g., increased depression/anxiety levels; Alessi et al., 2017; Thacker Darrow et al., 2022). For LGBTQ+ students, the first-year of college poses additional issues, such as discrimination or lack of belonging (Thacker Darrow et al., 2022; Hood et al., 2018). Overall, there is little research of this population, and less is known about specifically the first-year. It is important to understand those experiences, so that …

Development Of A Cookbook To Increase Calcium Intake In Black Women, Janai Yvonne-Aubrey Johnson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Background:
Black women face considerable challenges in maintaining adequate calcium intake due to limited access to nutrition education and calcium-rich foods. This issue is compounded by the global prevalence of lactose intolerance, affecting 75% of the population (Isoa & Sarkar, 2022). Given the significance of calcium for overall health, it is imperative to ascertain the optimal daily intake for adults and assess the shortfall in consumption compared to recommended guidelines. Additionally, it underscores the importance of investigating current calcium consumption levels among diverse populations to identify deficiencies and potential health implications. By addressing these gaps in knowledge, policymakers, healthcare professionals, …

The Cultural Mismatch Between Latinas' Interdependent Self-Concept And The Independent Culture Of Stem, Maria Guadalupe Velasco
The Cultural Mismatch Between Latinas' Interdependent Self-Concept And The Independent Culture Of Stem, Maria Guadalupe Velasco
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
I assessed the role of self-concept fit, as outlined in the SAFE model (Schmader & Sedikides, 2018), in Latina college students’ feelings toward pursuing a STEM course. Research on the underrepresentation of certain social groups in STEM has mainly focused on the role of goal fit. More specifically, researchers have found that portraying STEM environments as affording communal goals promotes goal fit, which is related to positive outcomes like interest, belonging, and favorable ratings for STEM courses, careers, and lab positions (Belanger et al., 2017; Belanger et al., 2020; Diekman et al., 2011). Because Latinas are socialized within an interdependent …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by a subset of symptoms known as restricted repetitive behaviors (RRBs). RRBs are categorized into both lower order and higher order RRBs, where the latter can be described as behavioral inflexibility. The BTBR T+ tf/J (BTBR) mouse strain has been an extensively used animal model that demonstrate the behavioral symptoms of these individuals, including inflexible behavior. Currently, there are few effective treatments for individuals with ASD that express RRBs. Past research has investigated treatments that target serotonin due its historic involvement in ASD. 8-OH-DPAT (8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamine) tetralin) is a research …

Examining Construal Level Priming As A Potentional Intervention For Misinformation Sharing, Xiangyu Cui
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Misinformation has become increasingly difficult to combat in the digital age. The current study tested a model exploring the relationships between self-regulation, habitual social media use, construal level, and propagation of misinformation. Drawing from previous research, I hypothesized that individuals with higher self-regulation would exhibit lower susceptibility to misinformation sharing. I also hypothesized that habitual social media use mediates the relationship between self-regulation and misinformation sharing. In addition, I introduced construal level priming as an experimental intervention, where individuals primed with abstract construal levels may demonstrate more discerning information processing, thereby reducing the likelihood of misinformation sharing. Results from data …

Beyond Initial Engagement: Investigating Factors That Contribute To Continued Participation In Social Movements, Alejandro Garcia
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Historically, social movements have been important in addressing social issues and driving social change, particularly in challenging both systemic racism and structural inequalities faced by minority groups. However, these movements require sustained participation to be effective. While it is important to understand the psychological factors as to how and why one engages in social movements, few empirical studies have evaluated the psychological factors that influence ongoing participation in social movements. This study examines predictors of continued engagement in social movements among individuals who have participated in two or more in-person demonstrations. A sample of 305 participants involved in four different …

ABSTRACT
There is a critical issue of special education teacher shortages in the United States. Student populations, many of whom are multilingual and have disabilities, continue to grow while there is a decrease in the teaching workforce. One policy initiative developed to combat the teacher shortage is the Assistant to Teacher Program. The Assistant to Teacher Program is a school district policy that aims to fill high-need teacher vacancies by supporting paraprofessionals to become certified teachers in a career advancement cohort. This qualitative study examines the working experiences of multilingual paraprofessionals in special education and their perceptions of the Assistant …

“We Take Crises And We Make Them Work”: Platicas And Testimonios Of Undocumented Latina/O/X College Students To Engage In Critical Race Feminista Praxis, Fernando Villalpando
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Undocumented Latinx college students have experienced and continue to experience challenges to earn their American dream (Pentón, Herrera & Obregón, 2018). Their aspirations and resiliency are facing one of the biggest challenges yet with the rhetoric and actions of the Trump Administration. These actions may have major implications on their journey through higher education and society. In California alone there are approximately 38,000 undocumented college students who could be in jeopardy of their future, and the implications of the current presidency’s actions could have enormous impacts on their lives (Gonzáles, 2009). By wanting to rescind Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals …

Composing From The Margins: The Breaking Of Writing Barriers, Empowering Voices & Broadening The Work Of Feminist Composition Studies, Jasmin Salgado
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The concept of identity politics within Composition Studies acknowledge how a writer’s social identity (race, gender, sexuality, disabilities, etc.) influences their writing style and shapes their language. Understanding the relationship between social identity and writing practices means recognizing the diverse perspectives writers bring to the writing classroom. In alignment with this perspective, feminist composition studies emphasize the importance of centering marginalized voices and creating inclusive learning environments where students can safely express their identities through writing. However, research reveals that diverse perspectives haven’t always been welcomed in academic spaces. Feminist compositionists unveil how discourse around writing conventions and language norms …
