Facilitating Interprofessional Collaboration To Support Aac Users: A Feasibility And Impact Study, Matthew L. Love, Marcella Cardoza Mccollum, Wendy Quach

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

This study explores the efficacy and challenges of interprofessional learning opportunities for preservice special education teachers and speech-language pathologists through a novel Interprofessional Summit. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research examined how interdisciplinary collaboration impacts the preparation of these professionals for working with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) communicators in inclusive settings. Data were collected from a small convenience sample of participants at a single university, focusing on the process rather than outcomes of interprofessional engagement. Through content and thematic analysis of summit facilitation guides, participant artifacts, and post-summit surveys, findings revealed high levels of engagement and fidelity to the …

Tangible Worth In Virtual Worlds: Leveraging Video Games For Play, Empowerment, And Community, Louise M. Yoho

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

Video games have become a mainstream form of entertainment that are played regularly by many around the world, including a large number of youth with disabilities (YwD). Video games’ popular presence in our society has created exciting new opportunities for student learning that educators who work with YwD can leverage for both skill acquisition and increased social interactions. This is especially true given that screens have become one of the most consistent and accessible ways of maintaining human contact, despite physical distances, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the isolation that accompanied it. This paper is specifically focused …

Is Ai Bias In Journalism Inherently Bad? Relationship Between Bias, Objectivity, And Meaning In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Gregory Gondwe

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism has led to debates about the impact of AI bias, with critics arguing that AI systems perpetuate societal stereotypes and inequalities. Critics argue that AI systems, influenced by historical data and human biases, may exacerbate stereotypes, marginalize underrepresented voices, and skew news coverage, thereby reinforcing societal inequalities. However, this article contends that bias, while often considered detrimental, is an inherent aspect of journalism that has shaped news production for centuries. Drawing on a historical perspective, the article explores the relationship between bias and journalistic storytelling, arguing that bias can, if managed ethically, …

Think Leader, Think Man? The Role Of Implicit Bias, Status-Legitimizing Beliefs, And Gender In Hospitality Leadership Discrimination, Michelle Russen, Mary Dawson, Juan M. Madera

Marketing Faculty Publications

System justification and cognitive dissonance theories were integrated to investigate how social norms influence perceptions of women in leadership by examining perceptions of reverse discrimination and gender hierarchies. To continue the progress of gender equity in hospitality leadership, it is crucial to understand the underlying conditions under which high-status groups may perceive reverse discrimination, leading to animosity in the hiring and promotion processes. Hospitality managers (n = 203) were surveyed to test a double moderator interaction between hotel managers' gender, implicit bias, and status-legitimizing beliefs. Results indicated implicit bias increased perceptions of reverse discrimination. Status-legitimizing beliefs strengthened the relationship between …

The Role Of Masculine And Feminine Gender Enactment In Hospitality Leadership, Michelle Russen, Mary Dawson, Tiffany Legendre

Marketing Faculty Publications

Purpose: The stereotypical assumptions of what it means to be hegemonically masculine and to be a leader are aligned in current society, potentially creating role incongruity for anyone who does not fit into this definition. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether masculine and feminine leadership traits of men and women hospitality managers affect employees’ intention to trust leaders and organizational attractiveness.

Design/Methods/Approach: Explanatory mixed methods were employed. First, two experiments (study 1 = woman manager, n = 137; study 2 = man manager, n = 117) were conducted with current hospitality employees to test the interaction of …

Comparing Funders' Altruism Versus Self-Interest: Leveraging The Context Of Crisis, Dan Liu, Guangzhi Shang, Cynthia Fan Yang

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

While reward-based crowdfunding has widespread popularity, the motivations driving funders, balancing self-interest and altruism, have remained puzzling. Prior research has been constrained by examination methods and produced mixed findings regarding the weight of altruism versus self-interest among funders. Our study takes a fresh perspective, delving into funder behavior amid a major crisis—the tumultuous backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings reveal that funders not only display an increased willingness to contribute but also significantly amplify their contributions, particularly to projects in crisis-affected regions, irrespective of external incentives like rewards. This underscores the prevalence of altruistic motives among funders in challenging …

A Conceptual View Of Data For Decision-Oriented Databases: A Knowledge-Driven Approach, Sung-Kwan Kim, Wenjun Wang, Seunghyun Kim

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Typical database design goes through three levels of data modeling: conceptual modeling, logical modeling, and physical modeling. In particular, conceptual modeling is important since it captures and documents user data requirements. Conceptual modeling serves as a blueprint for designing a database by defining information content to be included in a database. Presently, decision-oriented databases have no well-accepted conceptual modeling approach to apply. While some use conceptual modeling approaches for transaction-oriented databases such as the ER (Entity-Relationship) model, they are not well-suited for decision-oriented databases. It is hard to map from the ER Model to decision-oriented data models. Others attempt to …
