How Foucault’S Panopticon Governs Special Education In California, Gail Angus, John M. Winslade
How Foucault’S Panopticon Governs Special Education In California, Gail Angus, John M. Winslade
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
Special education laws in California function to create compliance by creating an environment of constant surveillance and monitoring from a range of perspectives. Even those who do the monitoring are themselves subject to this surveillance. This process is explained with reference to Bentham’s design of the panopticon and analyzed in relation to Foucault’s concept of governmentality. The intent here is to show how professionals’ and laypersons’ actions are governed by seeking to avoid being seen to behave incorrectly or getting caught behaving inappropriately. The governing of people’s lives is thus dispersed through professional decision-making and reporting. The intent of this …
Why Wisdom?, Dr. Richard Ashcroft
Why Wisdom?, Dr. Richard Ashcroft
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
To be wise I think it is important for educators to at least have some conceptualization of the roles both gnosis and episteme have played in human history and further consider a wisdom context broad enough to contain both. Current definitions of wisdom range from advanced practical “know how” (Sternberg, 1990) to “cosmic enlightenment” (Alexander & Langer, 1990). I suggest that to have a deep understanding of “wisdom” (or for that matter, any field of study) it is “wise” to define the “space” bracketed by its contrastingly extreme positions. This dialectic process could establish a context within which wisdom might …

Testimonios On The Role Of Mentorship Of Mexican Immigrants’ Higher Academic Attainment: Vengo Con Ganas, Solo Échame Una Mano!, Jessica Grisel Mendoza Servin
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to highlight the importance of having academic mentors of similar heritage to facilitate higher academic attainment of first generation Mexican immigrants. The researcher assures to demonstrate how constructs such as mentorship, self-efficacy, self-regulated learning, social and cultural capital, and similar heritage due to cultural values can positively influence and contribute to the success of English Language learners in academia.
Through the mentorship relationship, students, particularly minority groups, can tap into social and cultural capital that would otherwise be limited due to their immigration to a foreign country. Immigration typically limits individuals’ ability to communicate …

California Student Counselors Reflect On A Study Abroad Experience In New Zealand, John M. Winslade, Lorraine Hedtke, Amy Douglass, Korina Echeverria, Dorry Lillard, Joanna Garcia, Stefany Zacarias, Samantha Stephens, Krystal Howard
Special Education, Rehabilitation & Counseling Faculty Publications
Seven counseling and guidance students from California participated in a study abroad program in which they were placed in a high school in Auckland, New Zealand, for one month. Their comments on the experience in response to researchers’ questions form the basis of this paper. They suggest that the participants benefited from being immersed in a culturally different context where they had to consider differences in school organization, counseling priorities, and students’ cultural mores. This immersion required them to think about their own professional values and to engage in high level learning, appropriate to masters level field experience work. They …

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between age of onset of drug use and later drug dependence, and that of age of onset of drug use and current offense type/severity. In addition, it investigates the relationship between mental disorders, drug dependence, and current offense type/severity. Data from years 2007 to 2010 of the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program II (ADAM II) were used. The analyses included cross tabulation and chi square. The results indicated that early onset marijuana users (those who began using at age fourteen or younger) were more likely to develop drug dependence than late onset users of marijuana. …

The National Health Information Network And The Future Of Medical Information Privacy, Edward J. Szewczak
The National Health Information Network And The Future Of Medical Information Privacy, Edward J. Szewczak
Communications of the IIMA
Medical information has a special status among the various items of personal information. The introduction of information technology (IT) has changed the handling of medical information in ways that are both promising for improving health care as well as threatening to the individual patient's medical information privacy. The challenge to business practitioners is to manage medical information intelligently and to avoid the negative consequences of mismanaging this information, which may include customer backlash in the forms of boycotts, lawsuits, and loss of company reputation. This challenge is particularly important in the context of the U.S. National Health Information Network initiative, …

Evaluation Of User Acceptance For Web-Based Aptitude Tests, Michael Amberg, Sonja Fischer, Manuela Schroder
Communications of the IIMA
Web-based aptitude tests, which are a special category of aptitude tests, can be used for rather standardized test methods and for a large amount of users. The characteristics of web-based aptitude tests can have an impact on the test results and the user acceptance. The aim of our research is to develop a method for the evaluation of the user acceptance for web-based aptitude tests. Therefore, we used the DART-approach with the dimension (Perceived) Usefulness, (Perceived) Ease of Use, (Perceived) Network Effects and (Perceived) Costs as the theoretical basis, identified important acceptance indicators, developed a questionnaire and conducted a survey. …
It Transformation Decision Processes: A Conceptual Framework For Efficiency/Effectiveness Optimization, Jurgen Reiner, Volker Stix
It Transformation Decision Processes: A Conceptual Framework For Efficiency/Effectiveness Optimization, Jurgen Reiner, Volker Stix
Communications of the IIMA
Decision processes are complex managerial challenges for long-term information technology (IT) initiatives with an organization-wide scope (in short: IT transformations). Costs, benefits, and risks of such IT investments are hard to capture, and the dozens ofprescriptive methods proposed for IT project evaluation have proved to contribute little to solve the dilemma in practice. Thus, as opposed to continue the search for another prescriptive evaluation methodology, this paper follows a new approach: it targets the development of a conceptual framework that allows for the improved management of holistic IT decision processes - as opposed to cook-book approaches that attempt optimizing the …

Understanding The Adoption Behavior Of Indian Consumers: The Key To Enhance The Diffusion Of Personal Computers, Chitra Krishnaswamy
Communications of the IIMA
The market for personal computers, particularly in the household segment, is burgeoning on account of the liberalization, privatization and globalization measures initiated by Government of India. Consequently competition to win over the PC market has intensified. This scenario has enhanced the need for understanding the adoption behavior of the personal computer which would enable marketers to arrive at strategies corresponding to the target markets socio, economic, political, cultural and competitive setting at the macro level and adopter-centered approach at the micro level. This study is based on the collection of primary data from 335 adopters of personal computers and 165 …

In this paper, an attempt is made to conceptually unite three different application areas for semantic technologies, namely personal Knowledge Management, social networking, and Peer-to-Peer information-sharing. Until now, semantic technology has been applied to each of these application areas separately or in binary combinations only. By functionally combining all three areas in a single application, it is hoped to sketch a compelling Semantic Web system that will help increase the spread and acceptance of the Semantic Web vision. A concrete usage scenario of a community of researchers is used to demonstrate the approach.
Understanding Cyberspace Addictive Behavior With The Critical Social Theory, Ook Lee
Understanding Cyberspace Addictive Behavior With The Critical Social Theory, Ook Lee
Communications of the IIMA
This paper presents an application of the Critical Social Theory (GST) in understanding cyberspace behavior. CST can be used as one of qualitative methodologies in IS research. However most prior IS research utilized a very narrowly drawn insight from CST without historical and social context considered. This study tries to apply a general concept of CST for the purpose of providing plausible explanation for cyberspace behavior. CST identifies unjust conditions and tries to find the cause through critical reflection, which eventually might lead to emancipation of people. In this paper, a cyberspace behavior case of a relatively developed country where …

Leaders And Leadership: A Corpus-Based Approach For Evaluating The Evolution Of Leadership, William S. Lightfoot, Mounir Kehal
Communications of the IIMA
Much has been written about leaders and leadership, managers and management. The terms are often used interchangeably, (see http://thesaurus.reference.com). With rapid changes in technology, and the spread of capitalism, networks which use English as the common language are flourishing. Many authors have written about the affects this has had on management and leadership and the differences between the two. This paper reviews common definitions of leadership, explores some of the key concepts associated with the transition from the industrial to the information age, and the evolution of the terminology of leadership, and then reviews the results of a preliminary research …

Lying About Private Information: An Ethical Justification, Sabah S. Al-Fedaghi
Lying About Private Information: An Ethical Justification, Sabah S. Al-Fedaghi
Communications of the IIMA
Lying motivated by a fear of misusing private information is a key issue in ethics with many important applications in law, business, politics, and psychology. In this paper, lying is separated according to two types of assertions: lying about non-private information and lying about private information. This distinction is applied to the case of the 'known murderer' in the context of Kant's categorical imperative. The main result of the paper is narrowing the ethical dilemma to a choice between 'a zero private information society' and 'an alTlying-about-private-information society'. We claim that privacy as a universal requirement supports lying about private …

Web-Based Aptitude Tests At Universities In German-Speaking Countries, Michael Amberg, Sonja Fischer, Manuela Schroder
Communications of the IIMA
Universities can select their students more and more independently. In order to support the selection process, web-based aptitude tests are a possibility to balance benefits und efforts of this task. Within this paper, we will point out how current web-based aptitude tests are designed, what competences are covered, and which methods for development are used. For this purpose, we developed a classification how web-based aptitude tests are implemented. Furthermore, competences as the basis of web-based aptitude tests are appraised. Four competence categories (professional, methodological, personal, and social competences) are selected as the most appropriate pattern. Thereafter, we analyse methods for …
