This study examines the religious and spiritual activities that held the most value for older males and females, gender differences in these salient activities, and how elders rank church related activities with the idea of acquiring an understanding of the effects these activities had for the elderly. This study employed an in-person survey that used qualitative and quantitative methods to explore religiosity and spirituality. Participants were representative of the Christian religious and spiritual church congregations of the Inland Empire area, San Bernardino County.

The purpose of this research study was to examine the well-being of elders who are 65 years old and above. This study used a post-positivism paradigm and conducted face-to-face interviews with both elders and social workers who provide services to elders. The site for this research project was at West End Family Counseling Services (WEFCS), located in San Bernardino County along with an informal gathering of elders and social workers.

The study focus was ageism and assertiveness in aging women of color. The study examined a relationship between ageism occurring with these women and their response to it, if any. There were 41 participants in this study. They were all women of color 60-years of age and older. The participants were members of a church located in Los Angeles County.

The purpose of this study is to assess provider awareness and perception of service needs, and of the grief and loss issues that children with incarcerated parents face. These issues include the behavioral and emotional state of the child, the attribution of behaviors and emotions to grief, types of referrals, support and services offered for these children, placement disruptions, and keeping maternal contact.

The purpose of this study was to understand medical social workers' and licensed registered nurses' decision-making process for recognizing late-life depression. The study participants involved in this research project included 10 medical social workers and 9 licensed registered nurses from Redlands Community Hospital. Data was gathered qualitatively through interviews with seventeen older adults living in independent living apartments of a continuing care retirement community. Access to medical coverage has been a topic of constant disussion for many years, in particular accessibility for Mexican-American elderly women to have their medical needs met. Consequently, many elderly women use alternative forms of medicine such as 'remedios caseros' (herbal medicine) as a means to get their medical needs met. The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons elderly women continue to use alternative medicine even when they are elgible for health insurance such as Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurances.

This study tried to see if there is a correlation with the level of care an elderly person receives in a tri-level assisted living home and the quality of life they perceive and the level of depression they experience. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used. 18 participants were individually interviewed and were verbally administered the tests and questionnaire from a local tri-level assisted living facility in San Bernardino County which has 103 residents.

The purpose of this research is to conduct a secondary analysis of data from an Elderly Inpatient Mobility Program pilot tested in a 545 bed hospital. Mobility and ambulation are essential functions that help people maintain their health. They are especially important for the elderly whose functions may be compromised by age related changes of decreased muscle strength and elasticity, bone fragility, ligaments deterioration, decreased endurance, and acquired chronic conditions.

The purpose of this study is to find definitive changes within the dynamics of friendships and families in relation to the questions of information and communication technology (ICT) use and how it affects social capital of the elderly and their families and friends. What is now considered ordinary operations such as dialing, texting, photographing, gaming, email and voice mail, downloading, etc., is not viewed as ordinary forms of communication by some people and particularly, not by portions of the elderly population.

The purpose of this study was to contribute to bridging the gap between research and practice by investigating the particular usability and design issues that impact applicant perceptions when using unproctored testing, particularly the potentially unique reactions of older applicants. Age was also used as a variable to determine if it moderates applicant perceptions of procedural justice, organizational attraction and intentions toward the organization when taking an unproctored test.

Knowledge Of Master Of Social Work Students Regarding Parental Incarceration: An Exploratory Study, Shyra Lynn Harris

The purpose of this research study was to explore the level of knowledge among Master's of Social Work (MSW) students regarding the effects of parental incarceration on the children and families involved, and the special needs that result from this experience. This study utilized an online survey targeting MSW students at three Southern California Schools of Social Work to assess their overall knowledge of this topic, how this knowledge was attained, and level of competence and confidence that the respondents felt in meeting the psycho-social needs of the population. A total of 70 surveys were completed by the target respondents.

The purpose of this study is to explore whether social workers can recognize depression in the elderly. The elderly who are experiencing depression usually do not seek treatment from mental health professionals. Instead they go to primary care personnel in medical settings. Yet, social workers are employed in medical settings and are part of the primary care personnel. But, often the medical and/or mental health communities' lack of recognition of late life depression results from the attitude that old age is innately a downward spiral into limitations, weakness, helplessness, and burdensome existence.

This study looked at the Senior Peer Counseling Program to see what motivated these seniors to volunteer. Much research has been done on voluteering and the older adult population, much of it showing the benefits of volunteering on the health and well-being of the seniors that volunteer. The San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health's Agewise program has has a Senior Peer Counseling Program in effect since 1987 and increased it through MHSA (Mental Health Services Act) funding in 2007.

This study examines Black Americans' perceptions of social workers and of the role of the Black church and extended family in assisting individuals in the Black community. The study employed a survey design with self-administered questionnaires. Sixty respondents participated in the study and the study was conducted at two Black churches in the San Bernardino County.

Social workers are among the largest group of professionals in social services. They are trained specifically to meet the needs of their complex client populations. In order for their work to be more effective, social workers must establish rapport quickly and develop a therapeutic relationship with their clients based on understanding their background. Clients often feel more comfortable with a worker from a similar background or ethnic idenity. This study explores identifying the motives of new students entering the profession.
