Intellectual Property Theft And Its Impact On The Us-China Relationship, Amy Holmes Apr 2019

Intellectual Property Theft And Its Impact On The Us-China Relationship, Amy Holmes

Paideia

Growing in frequency in recent years, theft of United States intellectual property by China has become a serious concern for the US government. This theft impacts many areas of US life including increased cost of goods, difficulty participating in international trade, and increased national security concerns. This paper looks at three areas of intellectual property theft: patent theft, copyright theft, and trade secret theft, using specific examples of each. In examining each of these examples, we discuss the implications of this theft for US citizens as well as the relationship between the United States and Chinese governments. This paper concludes …

Tilt-Up Concrete Wall Anchorage Design: A Trial And Error Process, John W. Lawson, David L. Mccormick Apr 2019

Tilt-Up Concrete Wall Anchorage Design: A Trial And Error Process, John W. Lawson, David L. Mccormick

Architectural Engineering

Concrete tilt-up buildings are a common subset of a class of building referred to as rigid-wall-flexible-diaphragm (RWFD) structures. Common diaphragm types are plywood, oriented strand board, or metal deck. Masonry wall buildings with flexible diaphragms are also examples of RWFD buildings. Tilt-ups have performed poorly in past earthquakes, with the primary weakness being the anchorage between walls and roof. In the seismically active western United States, design was governed primarily by the Uniform Building Code (UBC) until the advent of the International Building Code (IBC). Before the 1973 UBC, it was common practice by design engineers to use the nailing …

The Timber Buckling Restrained Brace Frame, Jessica Resta Apr 2019

The Timber Buckling Restrained Brace Frame, Jessica Resta

Architectural Engineering

With the increasing awareness on the topic of earthquake resistance, efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solutions in the structural field are on the rise. The purpose of this report is to investigate the Timber Buckling Restrained Brace (TBRB), a new lateral-resisting element made of steel and lumber, applicable in residential and small commercial units. In addition to the TBRBs’ materials being readily available, the braces are easy to manufacture, reducing overall costs of production and transportation. The brace, made partly of wood, has also a low environmental impact when compared to other lateral force resisting elements like concrete shearwalls or …

The United States' Pursuit Of Regime Change In Venezuela, Robin Sawka Apr 2019

The United States' Pursuit Of Regime Change In Venezuela, Robin Sawka

Paideia

Since its first mass protest in 2016, Venezuela has been in a state of crisis, facing public protest, inflation rates, and diminishing access to basic necessities. Many of these issues can be tied to the decline of Venezuela’s once successful oil industry, which had created an economic-bubble until recent years. This paper uncovers the historical context of the issues faced by Venezuela’s oil industry and analyzes the role the United States has played in promoting its own influence within it. Furthermore, this paper examines the specific methods the United States has used to assert this influence and the motives and …

Investigating The Talbot Effect In Arrays Of Optical Dipole Traps For Neutral Atom Quantum Computing, Sergio Aguayo Apr 2019

Investigating The Talbot Effect In Arrays Of Optical Dipole Traps For Neutral Atom Quantum Computing, Sergio Aguayo

Physics

Quantum computers are devices that are able to perform calculations not achievable for classical computers. Although there are many methods for creating a quantum computer, using neutral atoms offers the advantage of being stable when compared to other methods. The purpose of this investigation is to explore possible optical dipole trap configurations that would be useful for implementing a quantum computer with neutral atoms. Specifically, we computationally investigate arrays of pinholes, the diffraction pattern generated by them, and the onset of the Talbot effect in these traps. We manipulate the radius of the pinholes, the number of pinholes in the …
