Flight Test Instrumentation For Drag Measurement Using Iot Devices, Bennett Diamond, Wyll Soll, William Busby, Danny Maas, Adam Waldemarson, William Bergman, Austin Conrad, Zachary Yamauchi

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

A wing drag measuring device known as a drag rake was conceived, built, and tested to support the flight test of the Nixus Sailplane project. This device improved upon existing drag rake designs by incorporating a self-contained microcontroller that logged drag rake data and broadcast that data wirelessly to a WiFi equipped smart device in real time. By being entirely wireless, the drag rake can be quickly mounted to any aircraft and does not have any wires that must run long distance to the cockpit affecting the aircraft’s aerodynamics. After the end date of the grant, the completed drag rakes …

Next Generation Diagnostic Devices: 3d-Printing On Paper, Aditya R. Jangid, E Brandon Strong, Oscar Mercado, Jonah Holbrook, Jacqueline Chuang

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

In an attempt to merge 3D-printing technology into the development of next generational diagnostic devices, specifically microfluidic paper based analytical devices (μPADs), we developed several hybrid 3D printed-paper devices capable of performing unique functions. We printed fluid reservoirs and pillars for larger fluid volumes, hemi and closed channels to selectively control fluid flow through the device, conductive wires for electronic quantitation, and more. Implementation of these features into traditional μPADs may allow for more robust, sensitive, and structural diagnostic devices.

Development Of A Lateral Flow Assay (Lfa) For The Rapid And Cost-Effective Diagnosis Of Cerebrospinal Fluid (Csf) Fistulae, Megan Mitchell, Brandon Strong, Emily Christensen Jan 2020

Development Of A Lateral Flow Assay (Lfa) For The Rapid And Cost-Effective Diagnosis Of Cerebrospinal Fluid (Csf) Fistulae, Megan Mitchell, Brandon Strong, Emily Christensen

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

A lateral-flow assay (LFA) for β-2-Transferrin (β2T) was developed (Figure 1). In the assay, the target protein binds to the capture antibodies at the test line producing a visible readout. All antibody deposition was completed by reagent applicator to maximize signal localization. We found a direct LFA β2T concentration of 0.16 mg/mL produced a visible positive line in an assay that involved the direct deposition of β-2-transferrin onto the nitrocellulose-based lateral flow device. This indicated the successful capture of antibody and colorimetric indicator. No control lines were utilized in preliminary devices. LFAs were initially designed for readout by antibody conjugation …

Understanding The Persistence Of Polymorphism In Girardinus Metallicus., Samantha West Jan 2020

Understanding The Persistence Of Polymorphism In Girardinus Metallicus., Samantha West

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Polymorphisms are a frequent and fascinating form of biodiversity. They occur when discrete types of individuals (“morphs”) persist in a population at frequencies above the mutation rate. Girardinus metallicus, a member of the live-bearing fish family Poeciliidae, exhibits a male-specific color polymorphism, in which males occur in multiple distinct morphs: a common “plain morph” with drab coloration, a rare “black morph” with black ventral coloration, and an extremely rare “yellow morph” with yellow ventral coloration. This polymorphism also extends to mating behavior, such that black morph males perform a display prior to copulation whereas plain and yellow morph males almost …

Impact Of Bi-Directional Loading On The Seismic Performance Of C-Shaped Piers Of Core Walls, Anahid A. Behrouzi, Andrew W. Mock, Dawn E. Lehman, Laura N. Lowes, Daniel A. Kuchma

Architectural Engineering

Reinforced concrete structural walls are commonly used as the primary lateral load resisting system in modern buildings constructed in high seismic regions. Most walls in high-rise buildings are C-shaped to accommodate elevators or other architectural features. C-shaped walls have complex loading and response including: (1) symmetric response in the direction of the web, (2) asymmetric response in the direction of the flange and (3) high compression and shear demands when used as a pier in a coupled-wall configuration. A research study was conducted on C-shaped walls tested under (1) uni-directional and (2) bi-directional loading of an isolated walls and (3) …

Evaluation Of A Bulge Reduction Technology For Corrugated Fiberboard Containers Under Static Compression, Daan Peleman, Jay Singh, Koushik Saha, Soma Roy

Industrial Technology and Packaging

This research examines the effect of top-to-bottom static compression load on the bulge of RSC containers. The study compares a control regular slotted container (RSC) constructed with corrugated fiberboard to tape-reinforced designs. The bulge reduction, achieved using various tape placements and conditioning environments, were measured. Currently, no research on the effect of reinforcement tape towards reduction in the out-of-plane displacement (bulging) of the corrugated fiberboard panels has been undertaken. Samples related to four different container designs, varying by presence, quantity and the position of the reinforcement tape on the vertical panels, were tested and analyzed. The study involved the use …

Influence Of Fiberboard Container Design On Compression Bulge Displacement, Koushik Saha, Shane Messner, John Dizon, Nirav Chhajed, Jay Singh Jan 2020

Influence Of Fiberboard Container Design On Compression Bulge Displacement, Koushik Saha, Shane Messner, John Dizon, Nirav Chhajed, Jay Singh

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Bulge effect is the out-of-plane displacement of a panel of a corrugated fiberboard box from its original position. This bulge effect often is the result of excessive weight being placed on a box that rests at the bottom of a palletized load. Panels that are out-of-plane reduce the stacking strength of the box and can result in damage to products inside the containers. This study was designed to find the influence of fiberboard container design on its bulging performance when under compression. The objective of the study was to determine if change in height of a regular slotted container will …

Intelligent Cinematic Camera Control For Real-Time Graphics Applications, Ian Harris Meeder Jan 2020

Intelligent Cinematic Camera Control For Real-Time Graphics Applications, Ian Harris Meeder

Master's Theses

E-sports is currently estimated to be a billion dollar industry which is only growing in size from year to year. However the cinematography of spectated games leaves much to be desired. In most cases, the spectator either gets to control their own freely-moving camera or they get to see the view that a specific player sees. This thesis presents a system for the generation of cinematically-pleasing views for spectating real-time graphics applications. A custom real-time engine has been built to demonstrate the effect of this system on several different game modes with varying visual cinematic constraints, such as the rule …

Human Path Prediction Using Auto Encoder Lstms And Single Temporal Encoders, Hayden Hudgins Jan 2020

Master's Theses

Due to automation, the world is changing at a rapid pace. Autonomous agents have become more common over the last several years and, as a result, have created a need for improved software to back them up. The most important aspect of this greater software is path prediction, as robots need to be able to decide where to move in the future. In order to accomplish this, a robot must know how to avoid humans, putting frame prediction at the core of many modern day solutions. A popular way to solve this complex problem of frame prediction is Auto Encoder …

Knee Joint Biomechanics In Transtibial Amputees In Gait, Cycling, And Elliptical Training, Greg Orekhov, A. Matt Robinson, Scott J. Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch Dec 2019

Knee Joint Biomechanics In Transtibial Amputees In Gait, Cycling, And Elliptical Training, Greg Orekhov, A. Matt Robinson, Scott J. Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch

Biomedical Engineering

Transtibial amputees may experience decreased quality of life due to increased risk of knee joint osteoarthritis (OA). No prior studies have compared knee joint biomechanics for the same group of transtibial amputees in gait, cycling, and elliptical training. Thus, the goal of this study was to identify preferred exercises for transtibial amputees in the context of reducing risk of knee OA. The hypotheses were: 1) knee biomechanics would differ due to participant status (amputee, control), exercise, and leg type (intact, residual) and 2) gait kinematic parameters would differ due to participant status and leg type. Ten unilateral transtibial amputee and …

The American Astronomical Society, Find Out More The Institute Of Physics, Find Out More Where Do Quasar Hosts Lie With Respect To The Size–Mass Relation Of Galaxies?, John D. Silverman, Tommaso Treu, Xuheng Ding, Knud Jahnke, Vardha N. Bennert, Simon Birrer, Malte Schramm, Andreas Schulze, Jeyhan S. Kartaltepe, David B. Sanders, Renyue Cen

Physics

The evolution of the galaxy size–mass relation has been a puzzle for over a decade. High-redshift galaxies are significantly more compact than galaxies observed today at an equivalent mass, but how much of this apparent growth is driven by progenitor bias, minor mergers, secular processes, or feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is unclear. To help disentangle the physical mechanisms at work by addressing the latter, we study the size–Mstellar relation of 32 carefully selected broad-line AGN hosts at 1.2 < z < 1.7 (7.5 < log MBH < 8.5; Lbol/LEdd ≳ 0.1). Using the Hubble Space Telescope with multiband photometry and …
