Cal Poly’s College of Science and Mathematics unveiled a 22’ by 6’foot diversity-themed mural on May 26, 2017 in the main lobby of the Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics (No. 180). The mural—“Integrated Visionaries”—represents the study and research of science and mathematics while considering themes of inclusivity, diversity and community. It integrates a stylized approach that allows viewers to see themselves in the mural. This catalog is based on the onsite installation and opening reception for the mural in May 2017.

Burlington Mall: A Redevelopment Plan, David Benjamin Horwitz Apr 2020

Burlington Mall: A Redevelopment Plan, David Benjamin Horwitz

City and Regional Planning

The Burlington Mall is a regional shopping center located in Burlington, Massachusetts. About ten miles outside of Boston, it sits near the junction of Interstate 95 and Route 3. In the first few decades of Burlington’s explosive growth as a suburb, the mall was a magnet to shoppers and other developments that created its present day reputation as a shopping and employment hub. Today, it remains a landmark in the Greater Boston Area and puts suburban Burlington on the map. Conversely, regional indoor malls are losing favor as shoppers increasingly value the third place experience. This document will identify where …

Neural Network Pruning For Ecg Arrhythmia Classification, Isaac E. Labarge Apr 2020

Neural Network Pruning For Ecg Arrhythmia Classification, Isaac E. Labarge

Master's Theses

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a widely accepted means of solving complex classification and detection problems in imaging and speech. However, problem complexity often leads to considerable increases in computation and parameter storage costs. Many successful attempts have been made in effectively reducing these overheads by pruning and compressing large CNNs with only a slight decline in model accuracy. In this study, two pruning methods are implemented and compared on the CIFAR-10 database and an ECG arrhythmia classification task. Each pruning method employs a pruning phase interleaved with a finetuning phase. It is shown that when performing the scale-factor pruning …

Heavy Civil Estimating Module For Cm 314, Everett A. Roberts Apr 2020

Heavy Civil Estimating Module For Cm 314, Everett A. Roberts

Construction Management

In the past, through engagement with students that have gone through the Heavy Civil class, it has been found that student understanding of typical heavy civil operations is subpar. Through an updated course module that focuses on estimating the four major operations, Earthwork, Underground, Asphalt, and Concrete, students will gain a deeper understanding of the heavy civil field of construction. The module consists of four assignments that pertain to the previously mentioned operations. Each contain a lecture detailing typical crew compositions and cycle times, reference material and resources the student can use when completing the assignments. This new module will …

Inverse Dynamics Analysis Of Youth Pitching Arm Kinetics Using Body Composition Imaging, Jay A. Sterner, Scott K. Reaves, Arnel L. Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch Mar 2020

Inverse Dynamics Analysis Of Youth Pitching Arm Kinetics Using Body Composition Imaging, Jay A. Sterner, Scott K. Reaves, Arnel L. Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch

Biomedical Engineering

This study’s objectives were to: (1) assess whether dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-mass inverse dynamics (ID) alters predictions of youth pitching arm kinetics and (2) investigate correlations between kinetics and body composition. Eighteen 10- to 11-year-olds pitched 10 fastballs. DXA scans were conducted to obtain participant-specific upper arm, forearm, and hand masses. Pitching arm segment masses and kinetics calculated with scaled and DXA masses were compared with paired t-tests and correlations were investigated with linear regression. Hand (p < 0.001) and upper arm (p < 0.001) DXA masses were greater, while forearm (p < 0.001) DXA masses were lesser, than their scaled masses. Shoulder compressive force (p < 0.001), internal rotation torque (p < 0.001), and horizontal adduction torque (p = 0.002) increased when using DXA masses. Shoulder compressive force correlated with body mass (p < 0.001) and body mass index (BMI; p = 0.002) and elbow varus torque correlated with body mass (p < 0.05). The main conclusions were that (1) using participant-specific mass ratios leads to different predictions of injury-related pitching arm kinetics and, thus, may improve our understanding of injury risk factors; and (2) pitching arm kinetics were correlated with body composition measures and a relatively high total body mass and/or BMI may increase shoulder and/or elbow injury risk.

Seasonal And Interannual Variability Of Phytoplankton Abundance And Community Composition On The Central Coast Of California, Alex Barth, Ryan K. Walter, Ian C. Robbins, Alexis Pasulka Mar 2020

Seasonal And Interannual Variability Of Phytoplankton Abundance And Community Composition On The Central Coast Of California, Alex Barth, Ryan K. Walter, Ian C. Robbins, Alexis Pasulka

Physics

Variations in the abundance and composition of phytoplankton greatly impact ecosystem structure and function. Within the California Current System (CCS), phytoplankton community structure is tightly coupled to seasonal variability in wind-driven coastal upwelling, a process that drives changes in coastal water temperatures and nutrient concentrations. Based on approximately a decade (2008-2018) of weekly phytoplankton measurements, this study provides the first characterization of the seasonal and interannual variability of phytoplankton abundance and composition in San Luis Obispo (SLO) Bay, an understudied region within the CCS. Overall, the seasonality of phytoplankton in SLO Bay mirrored that of the larger CCS; diatoms dominated …

Barriers In Transition To Contract-Grazing By Established Sheep And Goat Producers, Erin Campbell-Craven Mar 2020

Barriers In Transition To Contract-Grazing By Established Sheep And Goat Producers, Erin Campbell-Craven

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

This is an interdisciplinary thesis project with advisors associated with the Cal Poly Animal Science and Sociology departments, as well as University of California Cooperative Extension. With the cooperation of the California Woolgrower’s Association, I am conducting quantitative and qualitative research assessing the state of the sheep and goat contract-grazing industry within California through a series of surveys and in-depth interviews with participating producers. With the results of these surveys, I aim to identify successful practitioners of contract-grazing throughout the state, identify commonalities, and construct a series of management recommendations for established sheep and goat producers who wish to purse …

Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose Mar 2020

Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

This paper will dis sect the power dynamics of the built environment at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) as it relates to spatial representation for minorities on campus. By observing campus growth throughout the university’s history through the lenses of campus minorities, including women, black students, queer students, and disabled students, a pattern of dismissal and reluctanct compliance comes to light. While the administration’s rhetoric often reflects goals of inclusivity and diversity, the architectural history of Cal Poly reflects a lack of investment and reaction to the concerns of student minorities.
