Firstfruits Farm Tractor Shed, Gerardo Martinez, Kiana Dehpanah

Construction Management

Preconstruction lays the foundation for the overall outcome of a construction project. This project phase includes a detailed schedule, outlines the scope of work, and provides an overall estimate for the project. Devoting a sufficient amount of time and effort into the preconstruction phase is crucial. Preconstruction is an important component of what makes the entirety of a construction project successful. Preconstruction work also includes finding funders to cover the costs of material. Preconstruction and the construction for a tractor shed were completed for FirstFruits Farm in San Luis Obispo. The construction portion of this project relied on the successful …

Refining The Construction Communication Cal Poly Technical Elective Course, Anna Dissman

Construction Management

Communication is one of the most necessary parts in what makes a project successful in the construction industry. Normally, successful communication skills are developed through experience over time in this industry. When looking into the Construction Management (CM) program at California Polytechnic State University of San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), a lack of direct focus on multiple key communication skills is present. Furthermore, a new CM communication technical elective should be taught to focus and reinforce the communication skills needed for careers of future students post graduation. By crafting and distributing a well-thought out survey, new knowledge from the perspectives …

An Investigation Into Crouzeix's Conjecture, Timothy T. Royston Jun 2022

An Investigation Into Crouzeix's Conjecture, Timothy T. Royston

Master's Theses

We will explore Crouzeix’s Conjecture, an upper bound on the norm of a matrix after the application of a polynomial involving the numerical range. More formally, Crouzeix’s Conjecture states that for any n × n matrix A and any polynomial p from C → C,
∥p(A)∥ ≤ 2 supz∈W (A) |p(z)|.
Where W (A) is a set in C related to A, and ∥·∥ is the matrix norm. We first discuss the conjecture, and prove the simple case when the matrix is normal. We then explore a proof for a class of matrices given by Daeshik Choi. We expand …

Designing With Force-Transfer Shear Walls: A Stiff Task To Achieve Better Performance And Cost Savings, Michael Deigert, John W. Lawson Jun 2022

Designing With Force-Transfer Shear Walls: A Stiff Task To Achieve Better Performance And Cost Savings, Michael Deigert, John W. Lawson

Architectural Engineering

Wood-framed structural panel shear walls designed using the Force Transfer Around Openings (FTAO) method have become a very popular option for engineers, especially in areas with high lateral force requirements. The need for more affordable housing in metropolitan areas is leading to larger and taller multi-family residential buildings, and these typically wood-framed structures can benefit from the innovative approach behind FTAO design methodology. But do engineers have all the tools they need to accurately determine the stiffness of these walls and the associated lateral force required for their design.

Recreating Nasa Images Using Hubble Data: Two Populations Of Stars In Messier 5, Adam N. Looper Jun 2022

Recreating Nasa Images Using Hubble Data: Two Populations Of Stars In Messier 5, Adam N. Looper

Physics

This project seeks to recreate a color photo from NASA using Hubble data that shows the two distinct populations of stars in the cluster. Although the colored image displays the two types of stars, scientists often recolor astronomical pictures for two reasons: in order to clearly define objects, or to convert an image taken outside the visible spectrum into color. Thus, overlapping Hubble images colored according to filter should verify that there are two populations of stars in Messier 5, and the colored NASA photograph is valid in highlighting the unusual distribution of stars.

Quantum Key Distribution Simulation Using Entangled Bell States, Nayana Tiwari Jun 2022

Quantum Key Distribution Simulation Using Entangled Bell States, Nayana Tiwari

Physics

To communicate information securely, the sender and recipient of the information need to have a shared, secret key. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a proposed method for this and takes advantage of the laws of quantum mechanics. The users, Alice and Bob, exchange quantum information in the form of entangled qubits over a quantum channel as well as exchanging measurement information over a classical channel. A successful QKD algorithm will ensure that when an eavesdropper has access to both the quantum and classical information channels, they cannot deduce the key, and they will be detected by the key generators. This …
