Ecosystems constantly change, yet managers often lack information to move beyond static habitat assumptions. As human impacts and geographic information systems advance, it is important and feasible to quantify past habitat boundary shifts to inform management decisions (e.g. protective perimeters) robust to near-term habitat changes. This is the case in eelgrass (Zostera spp.), an ecosystem engineer that forms dynamic, often protected meadows. Practitioners protect areas to avoid human stress to eelgrass, but they can lack quantitative descriptions of the near-term potential for eelgrass meadows to shift into unprotected areas. Here, we quantified interannual eelgrass meadow boundary shifts within 23 sites …

Spatial Distribution Of Seawater Carbonate Chemistry And Hydrodynamic Controls In A Low-Inflow Estuary, Sarah E. Bartoloni, Ryan K. Walter, Sydney N. Wewerka, Jolie Higgins, Jennifer K. O'Leary, Emily E. Bockmon
Physics
Coastal and estuarine systems play an important role in the global carbon cycle and often have complex carbonate chemistry dynamics due to a multitude of biogeochemical and physical drivers. Compared to classic estuaries, mechanisms driving the distribution of carbonate parameters in low-inflow estuaries are understudied. The spatial distribution of carbonate chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters were characterized in Morro Bay, a short and seasonally hypersaline estuary on the Central California Coast, during the dry, low-inflow season to better understand in situ modifications. Sampling transects were completed in the main channel in June, August, and September of 2018, bracketing both a high …

Religion: A Repertoire Of Earth Ethics – A Study On The Ecospiritual Dimensions In Refuge: An Unnatural History Of Family And Place By Terry Tempest Williams, Nissi Karunya Ms., Shanthi K. Dr.
Between the Species
Ecological crisis, a contemporary reality has triggered a paradigm shift in human thinking and discourse. Greening of religion is a novel approach to the interpretation of religious literature. The purpose of this study is to identify how literature reflects religious ethics centred on ecology and it brings out perspectives of religion regarding environmental conservation. Through a close reading of the literary text Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place by Terry Tempest Williams, this paper aims to validate how the ecological ethics of religions can be a solution to environmental crisis and how this ecological reformation in spirituality should …

A Wui-Based Plan Integration For Resilience Scorecard, William Siembieda
WUI Fire Institute
The problem at hand. Between 2003 and 2021, the top 10 costliest wildland fires in the United States all occurred in California. One in four Californians live in an area considered high risk for wildfires. Given the impact of catastrophic fires in western states, the need exists for increasing Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire resilience through assessing and managing local land use, mitigation and adaptation plans. Most California jurisdictions produce and follow many different types of plans (e.g., General Plan with required Safety Element; Hazard Mitigation Plan, Community Wildfire Protection Plan), each with its own set of policies and …

Analysis Of Potential Application Of California Environmental Quality Act (Ceqa) Exemptions To Investor-Owned Utility Wildfire Mitigation Plans To Accelerate Fire Prevention And Mitigation Efforts, Anastasia Telesetsky, William Siembieda
WUI Fire Institute
Wildfire poses an existential threat for California. Five of the six largest wildfires in California’s history occurred in 2020 and 2021 including the first fire to ever impact over 1 million acres. Between 2014-2018, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) identified electrical power generation as igniting more fires than lightning strikes. In response to electrical utility assets igniting wildfires, the State of California has mandated that investor-owned utilities (IOU) develop Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMP) that include a spectrum of mitigation and prevention efforts including undergrounding of utilities, hardening of electrical assets (e.g., converting wooden poles to …

Electrochromic Smart Glass: Supplier Comparison Return On Investment Analysis, Hayden Stewart Owens
Construction Management
In recent years, sustainability in construction has become the focus of how the industry can progress with minimal environmental impact. As sustainability certifications become more desirable, key companies in the construction industry have started to seek greener alternatives to standard building systems. There are many sustainable products that are released, but these products are typically so complex that members of the industry are not familiar with these new systems. One novel piece of technology introduced to the industry is electrochromic glass, or smart glass. Electrochromic glass windows examine sunlight and heat exposure from the surrounding environment and change their opacity …

United Methodist Children Center Drain Project, Andy Abdelnour
Construction Management
The United Methodist Children Center in San Luis Obispo is a preschool for young children in our community. Some of these students are the children of Cal Poly faculty and staff. The previous drain was not draining water properly and was uneven with bumps and dips that became a hazard for the children. Children would trip, fall, and hurt themselves on the drain. A team of two Cal Poly Construction Management students Ethan Lin and Andy Abdelnour worked together to estimate, design, coordinate, demolish, and construct a new section of the drain that would be safe for the students. The …

I recently went to a zoo. Wild animals living in confinement with one single purpose: to entertain. When contemplating the concept of a zoo it will become surreal, I promise.

Kantian Ethics And Our Duties To Nonhuman Animals, Samuel Kahn
Kantian Ethics And Our Duties To Nonhuman Animals, Samuel Kahn
Between the Species
Many take Kantian ethics to founder when it comes to our duties to animals. In this paper, I advocate a novel approach to this problem. The paper is divided into three sections. In the first, I canvass various passages from Kant in order to set up the problem. In the second, I introduce a novel approach to this problem. In the third, I defend my approach from various objections. By way of preview: I advocate rejecting the premise that nonhuman animals are nonrational.

Analysis Of Gene Expression Investigating Biology Underlying High Regenerative Ability Of Marine Invertebrate Botrylloides Violaceus, Cassidy Andrasz
Analysis Of Gene Expression Investigating Biology Underlying High Regenerative Ability Of Marine Invertebrate Botrylloides Violaceus, Cassidy Andrasz
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
The marine invertebrate Botrylloides violaceus is a species of tunicate found in Morro Bay, CA with the extraordinary ability to regenerate its whole body. Furthermore, tunicates are the closest known relatives to vertebrates. Due to this organism's regenerative ability and relationship to vertebrates, it is of great interest to investigate the underlying mechanisms of regeneration and review its potential applications to related vertebrate organisms, including humans. The genome of B. violaceus was sequenced and assembled at Cal Poly, SLO which allowed for the proposed experiments to analyze gene expression, a field called transcriptomics. Transcriptomics tells us how the organism is …
