Teaching Abortion As A Historical Construct: The Case Of Early Twentieth-Century Brazil And Beyond, Cassia Roth
Teaching Abortion As A Historical Construct: The Case Of Early Twentieth-Century Brazil And Beyond, Cassia Roth
Feminist Pedagogy
Using open-access primary sources available online, this activity teaches abortion as an unstable category through a specific case study, early twentieth-century Brazil. The one-week module, although specific to one geographic region and chronological period, can serve as a lesson plan for undergraduate history courses, for disciplines that use genealogy methods, and for interdisciplinary courses. The lesson plan helps undergraduates think critically about what we think we know about abortion, and how our current understandings are not fixed but rather contingent on the society in which we live and on who is practicing abortion. Changing understandings of what constitutes an abortion …

Combatting Abortion Misinformation And Disinformation In Medical Education, Jaya Prakash, Deborah Bartz
Combatting Abortion Misinformation And Disinformation In Medical Education, Jaya Prakash, Deborah Bartz
Feminist Pedagogy
Abstract Introduction: Although abortion has historically been federally legal, functional access to abortion care has been thwarted by inflammatory political discourse. Abortion misinformation and disinformation have been deliberately intertwined into political agendas and ideologies, widening the gap between the lay public’s perception of and patients’ lived experience with abortion care. The politicization of abortion care has adverse effects on its provision and training along lines of inequity and marginalization established by preexisting systems of oppression and structural violence. Critical feminist pedagogy—an examination of class, gender, and sexuality on patriarchal misrepresentations of abortion information—can guide medical students to recognize and combat …

Blending Reproductive Justice Into General Education Courses, Ophra Leyser-Whalen, Adelle D. Monteblanco
Feminist Pedagogy
Despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, there is still work to be done by reproductive justice advocates. As educators, we can integrate reproductive justice topics into our existing courses or we can create new courses. In this paper we briefly define reproductive justice and provide some learning resources for educators. The bulk of our paper describes our special topics Introduction to Sociology: Sociology of Reproduction course as an example and potential model for educators as we urge them to think about how they might integrate reproductive justice into their existing courses and texts, such that students …

Teaching Reproductive Politics And Intersectional Empathy Through Ethnographic Case Studies, Rebecca Howes-Mischel
Teaching Reproductive Politics And Intersectional Empathy Through Ethnographic Case Studies, Rebecca Howes-Mischel
Feminist Pedagogy
In this critical commentary, I present feminist pedagogies developed over ten years of teaching “Cultural Politics of Reproduction” that scaffold students away from approaching reproductive experiences and politics through this register of polarization. This approach centers collaborative inquiry and critical reflection and uses ethnographic case studies to cultivate empathy. Such stance encourages students toward not only understanding that another person might make a decision that they fundamentally disagree with, but also the broader contexts shaping these decisions. Drawing on feminist scholarship focused on a range of cultural contexts, students learn to destabilize existing expectations and contrast how seemingly familiar politics …
“How Did I Not Know Any Of This?” Teaching Reproductive Justice In An Abortion Desert, Lena R. Hann
“How Did I Not Know Any Of This?” Teaching Reproductive Justice In An Abortion Desert, Lena R. Hann
Feminist Pedagogy
Reproductive justice is often used interchangeably with reproductive rights and reproductive health, overshadowing the importance of each movement’s contributions to understanding bodily autonomy. I am a former abortion care worker, now faculty at a Lutheran liberal arts college in an abortion desert. Antiabortion events on campus motivated students to request evidence-based education about reproductive issues, leading me to develop an immersive reproductive justice course. Reproductive justice is a framework that analyzes how systems of power prevent equitable access to and enjoyment of rights and health. The course examined how multifaceted oppressions shape reproductive self-determination and included content about abortion, adoption, …

Considerable Factors In Determining The Sustainability Benefits Of The Demolition Of An Existing Structure For A New Build And Of The Renovation Of An Existing Structure, Dev Boyd Hippenstiel
Considerable Factors In Determining The Sustainability Benefits Of The Demolition Of An Existing Structure For A New Build And Of The Renovation Of An Existing Structure, Dev Boyd Hippenstiel
Construction Management
The decision between whether to demolish or renovate a building comes down to which one will satisfy the owner’s needs and objectives while remaining within budget. This project will identify factors in determining sustainability benefits between a completely new construction project that demolishes the existing structure prior to rebuilding and a renovation project that reuses some or all of the existing structure. Research on construction data, interviews conducted with leading industry members, and journals that reported on both these strategies are presented. This project will examine considerations that reduce the demolition’s negative impact on the environment and improve the overall …
Designing Safety Vests To Fit Women, Claire Peters
Designing Safety Vests To Fit Women, Claire Peters
Construction Management
This paper focuses on the design and construction of safety vests for women, particularly in XS and XXL sizes. Safety vests are an essential piece of protective equipment worn by individuals working in environments requiring high visibility for safety reasons. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) develop safety vest standards to ensure 360-degree visibility of workers, but these standards create limitations in manufacturer’s abilities to create a well-fitted vest for women of smaller stature, particularly in the sizes between XXS and S, as the required square inches of material result in a baggy …

Light Bulb Moments: Where Do Student Entrepreneurs Get Their Ideas, Stern Neill, Mark Bieraugel
Light Bulb Moments: Where Do Student Entrepreneurs Get Their Ideas, Stern Neill, Mark Bieraugel
Marketing
Understanding how to support creative ideation is an important, yet, elusive, issue for marketing educators. To shed light, this study proposes ideation as a malleable state influenced by “outside-the-brain” resources. By examining venture concept ideation, this study captures the ideation–environment relationship using experience sampling to tap into the daily lives of student entrepreneurs. The findings identify how entrepreneurial ideas emerge from specific external interactions and engagements, which are contextualized using two Japanese conceptualizations of space, ba (場) and ma (間). The results inform both marketing education and entrepreneurial marketing.

Development Of Mirror Flexures For Use In The Muvi Instrument, Colin W. Harrop
Master's Theses
The Miniaturized Ultraviolet Imager (MUVI), is a compact wide field UV imaging instrument in development at UC Berkeley Space Sciences Laboratory and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. MUVI is designed to fit in a 2U CubeSat form factor and provide wide field, high resolution images of the ionosphere at far ultraviolet wavelengths. This thesis details the design and analyses of MUVI’s deployable cover mirror mounting flexures. Three different flexure geometries were evaluated, an optimal candidate was determined based on a number of criteria including isolation of vibration and stress to the mirrors, manufacturability and cost. The design of the flexure …
