Enhancement Of Pneumatic Nebulization Efficiency Through Application Of An Electric Field, Richard N. Savage, G. M. Hieftje
Materials Engineering
A novel technique is described for reducing the size of aerosol droplets produced by a pneumatic nebulizer of the kind commonly used in flame or plasma spectrometry. The technique involves the application of an electric field to the tip of the nebulizer, resulting in an induced surface charge on the liquid being nebulized. In turn, the surface charge reduces the liquid's surface tension and results in the generation of a finer aerosol. A second Leray spectral sequence of relative hypercohomology is constructed. (This is skew in generality to an earlier one constructed by S. Lubkin [(1968) Ann. Math. 87, 105-255].) The Mayer-Vietoris sequence of relative hypercohomology [Lubkin, S. (1968) Ann. Math. 87, 105-255] is also generalized.

Foreign Involvement In The Preconditions For Political Violence: The World System And The Case Of Chile, Harold R. Kerbo

Current theories of internal political violence and revolution view foreign influence on these events as most often coming in two general forms: (1) direct and intentional involvement through various types of support for one side or another after a conflict has developed; and (2) the indirect and unintentional influence on the "preconditions" for political violence through such things as "cultural contact," disruption associated with international war, or "diffusion effects." Focusing on this second category (foreign influence on the preconditions for political violence), this paper charges that current theories have neglected the extent to which powerful nations today can have direct …

Factors Affecting Product Lifetime: A Study In Support Of Policy Development For Waste Reduction, W. David Conn
City and Regional Planning
An exploratory study has been examined factors affecting the lifetimes of selected small electrical appliances, to assist in the development of policies to extend these lifetimes (for the purposes of conserving resources, protecting the environment, and reducing the costs of solid waste management). The study included (i) a consumer survey, (ii) in-depth interviews with manufacturers, and (iii) a limited investigation of second-hand markets. Tentative findings are that physical durability appears to be a key factor affecting the lifetime of a few of the products examined (particularly those that malfunction after less than three years' use) while the lifetimes of other …
