Lower Mode Response Of Circular Cylinders In Cross-Flow, William W. Durgin, P. A. March, Paul J. Lefebvre
Lower Mode Response Of Circular Cylinders In Cross-Flow, William W. Durgin, P. A. March, Paul J. Lefebvre
Office of the Provost Scholarship
Transverse amplitude responses of a circular cylinder in cross-flow were determined as a function of reduced velocities for a variety of spring constants and damping coefficients. Maxima were found at reduced velocities of 5 and 16, and were of comparable amplitude. The first resonance, designated the "fundamental mode, " was due to normal vortex street excitation of the spring-mass system. The second resonance, designated the "lower mode," occurred when the natural frequency was approximately one-third of the normal vortex shedding frequency. By assuming that the driving force was sinusoidal, it was possible to evaluate the lift coefficients at resonance. Lift …

Nature Of Iron Deposits On The Cardiac Walls In Β-Thalassemia By Mössbauer Spectroscopy, K. S. Kaufman, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel, A. Rosenthal
Nature Of Iron Deposits On The Cardiac Walls In Β-Thalassemia By Mössbauer Spectroscopy, K. S. Kaufman, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel, A. Rosenthal
Physics
An identification of the nature and an estimation of the particle size distribution of the iron deposits on thalassemic heart tissue is carried out by variable temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy. Comparison of Mössbauer spectra obtained for the thalassemic heart tissue (I) with those of normal heart tissue (II) and of horse spleen ferritin (III) identifies the iron deposits to be small, superparamagnetic particles of ferritin and/or hemosiderin, two closely related iron storage proteins containing an iron core of (FeOOH)8(FeO · OPO3H2). The dependence of the superparamagnetic relaxation time, τ2, of magnetically ordered fine …

Gobar Gas Plants: How Appropriate Are They?, Hemalata C. Dandekar
Gobar Gas Plants: How Appropriate Are They?, Hemalata C. Dandekar
City and Regional Planning
The technology of producing methane gas from cow-dung and other wastes and using it as fuel for various, purposes has received considerable attention in India during the last decade. In the light of the growing energy shortage that the country faces gobar gas is being cited as having great potential for answering the energy needs of rural areas. In this climate it is relevant to explore the desirability of gobar gas technology from the village perspective since, after all, it is the farmer in' the countryside who, ultimately decides whether or not to invest in a gobar gas plant.
