Heat Tolerance Of Kentucky Bluegrasses, Perennial Ryegrasses, And Annual Bluegrass, David J. Wehner, T. L. Watschke
Heat Tolerance Of Kentucky Bluegrasses, Perennial Ryegrasses, And Annual Bluegrass, David J. Wehner, T. L. Watschke
Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
Use of cool-season turfgrasses in transitional environments is limited, in part, by their heat tolerance. Development of a rapid heat tolerance screening technique would be of value in determining the potential of turf•grasses for use in warmer areas.
The heat tolerance of 22 Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars, Poa annua L., and four perennial ryegrass cultivars (Lolium perenne L.) was evaluated by exposing plants for 30 min to temperatures ranging from 41 to 49 C in single degree intervals. Ten-week-old plants, which had been grown under a low level of N fertilization and watered infrequently to maximize …
Projecting Regional Market Shares For Selected Florida Fresh Market Vegetables, Wayne H. Howard, Arden W. Colette
Projecting Regional Market Shares For Selected Florida Fresh Market Vegetables, Wayne H. Howard, Arden W. Colette
Agribusiness
Growers of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and green peppers in Florida have exhibited concern about their market share in the U.S. winter fresh vegetable market. Several studies have looked at the affects of changes in tariffs and Market Orders on Florida's market share from 1962-1979 using regression and time-series analysis. Florida produce dominates the market in the eastern regions during the winter and spring season. Even though the market shares fluctuate, Florida has historically had a smaller share. The market shares have stabilized after the shocks. Forecast market shares, based on the time-series models, show Florida's producers maintaining their dominance in …
Characteristics Of The Poor: A Continuing Focus In Social Research, Harold R. Kerbo
Characteristics Of The Poor: A Continuing Focus In Social Research, Harold R. Kerbo
Social Sciences
Though most social scientists acknowledge that the general population in the United States accepts individualistic explanations of poverty, a recent study (Henslin and Roesti, 1976) claims that social scientists conversely hold predominantly structural explanations of poverty. The present study questions this conclusion with an analysis of poverty articles in five major sociology journals from 1965 and 1975. The data show that though social scientists may at times make structural theoretical statements, their research overwhelmingly focuses on the characteristics of the poor in explaining poverty. The data also show 111at this type of poverty research has been increasing, and that government …
Characteristics Of The Background Emission Spectrum From A Miniature Inductively-Coupled Plasma, Richard N. Savage, G. M. Hieftje
Characteristics Of The Background Emission Spectrum From A Miniature Inductively-Coupled Plasma, Richard N. Savage, G. M. Hieftje
Materials Engineering
The spectral characteristics of the background radiation emitted by a miniature inductively-coupled plasma (i.c.p.) are carefully examined and methods for reducing undesirable features discussed. The complex nature of the background emission spectrum for the mini-i.c.p. indicates that careful line selection criteria and background correction procedures should be employed. Extending the torch coolant tube to the bottom of the region being observed in the plasma proved to be the most effective method for reducing undesirable spectral band features. Acute changes in background emission levels with r.f. power and nebulizer gas flow rates emphasize the need for careful control of these parameters …

Asymptotic Functions And The Problem Of Multiplication Of Distributions, Todor D. Todorov
Asymptotic Functions And The Problem Of Multiplication Of Distributions, Todor D. Todorov
Mathematics
The asymptotic functions are a new type of generalized functions. But they are not functionals on some space of test-functions as the Schwartz distributions. They are mappings of the set of the asymptotic numbers (1, 3, 5, 6) into itself. On its part, the set of the asymptotic numbers is a totally-ordered set of generalized numbers including the systems of real and complex numbers, as well as infinitesimals and infinitely large numbers. Every two asymptotic functions can be multiplied. On the other hand, the Schwartz distributions have realizations, in a certain sense, as asymptotic functions. The motivations of this work …
Generalized Worpitzky Identities With Applications To Permutation Enumeration, Don Rawlings
Generalized Worpitzky Identities With Applications To Permutation Enumeration, Don Rawlings
Mathematics
The enumeration of permutations by inversions often leads to a q -analog of the usual generating function. In this paper, two generalizations of the Worpitzky identity for the Eulerian numbers are obtained and used to enumerate permutations by the descent number and the major index of their inverses. The resulting (t, q)-generating series do in fact generalize the q-series obtained when counting by inversions.
The R-Major Index, Don Rawlings
The R-Major Index, Don Rawlings
Mathematics
The r-major index is a new permutation statistic that is suggested by the work of Carlitz and Gausner on Foulkes' skew hook rule for computing the r-Eulerian numbers. The new statistic (1) generalizes both the major index and the inversion number of a permutation and (2) leads to a q-analog of the r-Eulerian numbers.
Mossbauer Spectroscopy Of Iron-Containing Dermal Granules From Molpadia Intermedia, S. Ofer, G. C. Papaefthymiou, R. B. Frankel, H. A. Lowenstam
Mossbauer Spectroscopy Of Iron-Containing Dermal Granules From Molpadia Intermedia, S. Ofer, G. C. Papaefthymiou, R. B. Frankel, H. A. Lowenstam
Physics
Dermal granules containing hydrous ferric oxide cores from Molpadia intermedia were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy from 1.5 t0 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 80 kOersted at 4.2 K. A magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered state is observed at 10 K. The results are compared with the magnetic behavior of micellar cores of ferritin from eukaryotes and iron-storage materials from prokaryotes.
Decision Processes With Total-Cost Criteria, Theodore P. Hill, Steven Demko
Decision Processes With Total-Cost Criteria, Theodore P. Hill, Steven Demko
Research Scholars in Residence
By a decision process is meant a pair (X,Γ), where X is an arbitrary set (the state space), and Γ associates to each point x in X an arbitrary nonempty collection of discrete probability measures (actions) on X. In a decision process with nonnegative costs depending on the current state, the action taken, and the following state, there is always available a Markov strategy which uniformly (nearly) minimizes the expected total cost. If the costs are strictly positive and depend only on the current state, there is even a stationary strategy with the same property. In a …
Quasi-Extended Asymptotic Functions, Todor D. Todorov
Quasi-Extended Asymptotic Functions, Todor D. Todorov
Mathematics
The class F of "quasi-extended asymptotic functions" introduced in the present paper contains all extended asymptotic functions [8, (3.1)] (in particular, all examples constructed in [9, Sec. 1 ]). But F contains also some new asymptotic functions very similar to tht Schwartz distributions. On the other hand, every two quasi-extended asymptotic functions can be multiplied as opposed to the Schwartz distributions; in particular, the square 948;2 of an asymptotic function 948; similar to Dirac's delta-function is constructed as an example. The connection with the asymptotic functions introduced in [2] and [4] is established.
Study Of Iron In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Richard P. Blakemore
Study Of Iron In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Richard P. Blakemore
Physics
Bacteria have recently been discovered directing their movements by sensing the earth's magnetic field. They contain arrays of crystals of lodestone or magnetite which they synthesize from iron in the ocean. The discovery of the same type of crystals in the abdomens of honey bees and the brains of homing pigeons suggests that nature is not oblivious to the earth's magnetic field. The biological mechanism for sensing magnetic fields has never been determined. These bacteria are capable of biologically synthesizing highly purified single domain magnets that would be very expensive to produce chemically.
The tiny perfect magnetite crystals made by …
