The Wpi Space Glove Design Project, William W. Durgin, Allen C. Hoffman, Holly K. Ault, Francis C. Lutz
Office of the Provost Scholarship
WPI was one of four colleges and universities awarded NASA grants for student design and development of an improved glove for space suits. This paper traces the design, development and testing of the WPI prototype glove. Test results showed that the glove did not significantly limit hand and finger motion when pressurized at 8 psi, except in the spherical grip mode. This project demonstrated that problems originating from space technology provide excellent vehicles for student learning and can generate creative solutions.

Utilization Of Electronic Spreadsheets For Laboratory Data Analysis, C. F. Maguire Iii, William W. Durgin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
The utilization of business spreadsheets for laboratory data manipulation is discussed. The spreadsheet, LOTUS 1-2-3, is presently being utilized to store and analyze data obtained from a deep cavity resonator type apparatus. Methodology for the analysis, from non dimensionalization of parameters, to relevant plotting of data pairs, is presented. All discussions are based upon current theory, and laboratory observations of flow induced resonance in deep cavities.

Emerging Technologies For Verification Of Arms Control Treaties, David W. Hafemeister
Physics
Progress in the technical means of monitoring to verify compliance to arms control treaties is discussed in the following areas: Real-time surveillance with charge-coupled devices in the visible and infrared; image enhancement with digital 1 image processing and with adaptive optics; imaging with radars based on satellites and on the ground; seismic monitoring with high frequency discrimination and with unattended in-country seismic stations; and nuclear weapons test monitoring with the global positioning satellite system.

New Specimen Design For Studying The Growth Of Small Fatigue Cracks With Surface Acoustic Waves, Blair London

The study of small surface fatigue cracks in AISI 4140 quenched and tempered steel by a nondestructive surface acoustic wave technique is summarized. A novel cantilevered bending, plate-type fatigue specimen is described that is compatible with the acoustic method.
