Caste And The Classroom: A Review Of Wilkerson's Work, Evans-Amalu Kelsey
Caste And The Classroom: A Review Of Wilkerson's Work, Evans-Amalu Kelsey
Feminist Pedagogy
Isabel Wilkerson’s (2020) Caste is a useful book to integrate into introductory courses in education training programs to discuss the sociological context of where the education system in the United States of America is situated. This book review suggests how preservice teacher programs may use Wilkerson’s work to bolster theoretical understanding in the inequitable structures education is built on, and what actionable steps can be taken both in and outside of the classroom.

Feminist Pedagogy
In A Guide to Teaching Introductory Women’s and Gender Studies: Socially Engaged Classrooms (2021), authors Holly Hassel, Christie Launius, and Susan Rensing draw on their years of experience designing and teaching introductory courses to Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) and on the insights of key feminist educators. Their writing style is engaging and approachable, and they succeed at addressing the concerns of both students and teachers by taking into account the growing demographic diversity in WGS classrooms. Educators within the field of WGS–graduate students, new faculty, and experienced professors–will find within this text a rich range of pedagogical materials that …
Functional Nanocomposite Coatings For Use In Food Packaging, Camden N. Webb
Functional Nanocomposite Coatings For Use In Food Packaging, Camden N. Webb
Master's Theses
Plastics are a class of materials known for their cost and property advantages, increasing significantly in their usage worldwide. Unfortunately, these benefits come with an increasingly concerning environmental impact. A combination of inadequate disposal options and combinations of materials have led to environmental disasters that will impact generations. One of the worst areas for plastic waste is food packaging. Plastic as a material generally excels at durability and longevity, but as food packaging, it outlives its intended purpose by several orders of magnitude. This leads to plastic food packaging materials sitting in landfill or leading to the environment for hundreds …
Co-Simulation Of Active Magnetic Bearing Rotors Using Adams, Msc Apex, And Simulink, Shea A. Charkowsky
Co-Simulation Of Active Magnetic Bearing Rotors Using Adams, Msc Apex, And Simulink, Shea A. Charkowsky
Master's Theses
Apex-Adams-Simulink co-simulation is applied to active magnetic bearing (AMB) rotors, demonstrating results unshown in literature, including continuous frequency response, and unavailable in known rotor dynamics software, including touchdown bearing impact. AMBs levitate rotors without contact, so they involve no friction, wear, lubrication, pollution, or shaft speed limits and are thus valuable for large, high-speed applications. Modeling of such rotors, necessary for safety and performance, simultaneously requires flexible body dynamics and advanced control design, but simulation programs tend to specialize in only one or the other. The co-simulation method combines multiple such programs—MSC Apex (finite element modeling), Adams (multibody dynamics), and …
Mate Choice And Sexual Conflict In A Livebearing Fish, Julia C. Kasper
Mate Choice And Sexual Conflict In A Livebearing Fish, Julia C. Kasper
Master's Theses
Eavesdropping occurs when a receiver extracts information from an interaction without directly engaging with the signaler. Eavesdropping has been shown to be an effective way of evaluating the quality of potential mates and their abilities in male-male competition, without having to directly interact with them, thereby reducing energy costs and mating harassment. Girardinus metallicus is a livebearing poeciliid fish endemic to Cuba whose mating system is dominated by mating harassment in the form of sneak copulations, persistent displaying, and male-male aggression. G. metallicus has a male specific polymorphism in both melanin coloration and behavior. Males with melanin coloration are known …
Phase Distribution Of Nickel, Chromium, And Cobalt In Seawater At Olivine-Enriched Beaches: Implications For Carbon Capture By Enhanced Silicate Weathering, Nathaniel J. Padrnos
Phase Distribution Of Nickel, Chromium, And Cobalt In Seawater At Olivine-Enriched Beaches: Implications For Carbon Capture By Enhanced Silicate Weathering, Nathaniel J. Padrnos
Master's Theses
The application of olivine to coastal areas is a proposed method of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for climate change mitigation. Olivine is abundant and dissolves relatively fast, but it contains trace amounts of nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and cobalt (Co) which may be toxic to marine biota in cases of widespread coastal olivine spreading. Prior studies have suggested that Ni concentrations in marine sediments and/or the overlying water column due to olivine dissolution could be a limiting factor for its carbon capture potential. Therefore, it is critical to understand and model the processes affecting trace metal bioavailability after …
Analyzing The Labor Shortage In The Construction Industry And The Best Practices To Increase Worker Satisfaction, Cade Batchman
Analyzing The Labor Shortage In The Construction Industry And The Best Practices To Increase Worker Satisfaction, Cade Batchman
Construction Management
The construction industry is facing a significant labor shortage, which has far-reaching implications for the industry and the economy. This paper explores the causes of the shortage and the practices being implemented to address it. Economic changes, technological advancements, union/open shop dynamics, educational shifts, and the industry's image all contribute to the shortage. The economic rebound from the 1980s recession and the lack of new entrants into the field have created a demand-supply gap. Additionally, slow adoption of technology and the perception of construction work as physically demanding and risky have deterred potential workers. The decline in union membership has …

Subject-Specific Human Knee Fea Models For Transtibial Amputees Vs Control Tibial Cartilage Pressure In Gait, Cycling And Elliptical Training, Ali Yazdkhasti
Master's Theses
Millions of individuals around the globe are impacted by osteoarthritis, which is the prevailing type of arthritis. This condition arises as a result of gradual deterioration of the protective cartilage that safeguards the ends of the bones. This is especially true of transtibial amputees, who have a significantly higher incidence of osteoarthritis of the knee in their intact limb than non-amputees. Engaging in regular physical activity, managing weight effectively, and undergoing specific treatments can potentially slow down the advancement of the disease and enhance pain relief and joint function. Nevertheless, the relationship between the type of exercise and its impact …

Mountain Lion Resource Selection In The California Central Coast: Modeling Habitat Suitability For A Large Carnivore In A Rapidly Changing Environment, Megan Elizabeth O'Connor
Master's Theses
Land use conversion toward agriculture such as orchards and vineyards can have severe negative impacts on habitat and wildlife, particularly large carnivores, globally through habitat fragmentation and loss. The mountain lion (Puma concolor) population in the California Central Coast is thought to provide “stepping-stone” connectivity between several severely genetically compromised coastal populations throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains and several mountain ranges in Southern California; however, the California Central Coast is one of the fastest-developing regions of California with little protection against future land use conversion. Conserving areas of and corridors between high-quality mountain lion habitat through conservation easements …
Theoretical And Experimental Study Of Active Magnetic Bearing Control Integrated On Bently's Rotor Kit, Arturo Mario Flores
Theoretical And Experimental Study Of Active Magnetic Bearing Control Integrated On Bently's Rotor Kit, Arturo Mario Flores
Master's Theses
This thesis focuses on the comprehensive study of controlling a customized Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB) installed on Bently Nevada’s RK4 rotor kit in Cal Poly’s Vibrations and Rotordynamics Lab. The AMB was uniquely designed and manufactured by a Cal Poly senior project team to fit Bently’s rotor kit and the results of this research are distinctive to the custom system. To achieve practical functionality of the AMB system, we designed a controller a Virtual Instrument (VI) using the National Instrument software, LabVIEW. From the experimental study, we calibrated the programming to find unknown parameters of the AMB system and validated …

Physics
The broad-line region (BLR) size–luminosity relation has paramount importance for estimating the mass of black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Traditionally, the size of the Hβ BLR is often estimated from the optical continuum luminosity at 5100 Å, while the size of the Hα BLR and its correlation with the luminosity is much less constrained. As a part of the Seoul National University AGN Monitoring Project, which provides 6 yr photometric and spectroscopic monitoring data, we present our measurements of the Hα lags of high-luminosity AGNs. Combined with the measurements for 42 AGNs from the literature, …
Effects Of Basin-Scale Climate Modes And Upwelling On Nearshore Marine Heatwaves And Cold Spells In The California Current, Michael Dalsin, Ryan K. Walter, Piero L. F. Mazzini
Effects Of Basin-Scale Climate Modes And Upwelling On Nearshore Marine Heatwaves And Cold Spells In The California Current, Michael Dalsin, Ryan K. Walter, Piero L. F. Mazzini
Physics
Marine heatwaves and cold spells (MHWs/MCSs) have been observed to be increasing globally in frequency and intensity based on satellite remote sensing and continue to pose a major threat to marine ecosystems worldwide. Despite this, there are limited in-situ based observational studies in the very shallow nearshore region, particularly in Eastern Boundary Current Upwelling Systems (EBUS). We analyzed a unique dataset collected in shallow waters along central California spanning more than four decades (1978–2020) and assessed links with basin-scale climate modes [Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and El Niño (MEI)] and regional-scale wind-driven upwelling. We found no significant increase/decrease in MHW/MCS …
Avoiding Anthropomoralism, Julian Friedland
Avoiding Anthropomoralism, Julian Friedland
Between the Species
The Montreal Declaration on Animal Exploitation, which has been endorsed by hundreds of influential academic ethicists, calls for establishing a vegan economy by banning what it refers to as all unnecessary animal suffering, including fishing. It does so by appeal to the moral principle of equal consideration of comparable interests. I argue that this principle is misapplied by discounting morally relevant cognitive capacities of self-conscious and volitional personhood as distinguished from merely sentient non-personhood. I describe it as a kind of anthropomorphizing moralism which I call anthropomoralism, defined as the tendency to project morally relevant characteristics of personhood onto merely …
How Many Trans People Get Abortions? An Introduction To Critical Data Studies, Derek P. Siegel
How Many Trans People Get Abortions? An Introduction To Critical Data Studies, Derek P. Siegel
Feminist Pedagogy
As abortion restrictions escalate, scholars and activists have struggled to incorporate transgender individuals into their organizing efforts. On one hand, most people recognize that not everyone who needs an abortion identifies as a woman. On the other hand, many are reluctant to abandon or complicate the rallying cry of abortion as a "woman's issue." Caught at a perceived crossroad, stakeholders wonder, "how many transgender people actually get abortions?" in the hopes that this number might guide their social movement strategies. In this assignment, students will use the concept of critical data studies to examine the politics of how we collect …

Review Of Dan C. Shahar’S Why It's Ok To Eat Meat And Per Bauhn’S Animal Suffering, Human Rights, And The Virtue Of Justice, Josh Milburn
Between the Species
It’s tricky to find decent defences of meat-eating of the kind practiced by most westerners. I was thus intrigued to pick up two short books defending meat-eating. Dan Shahar’s Why It’s Ok to Eat Meat (2022) is in Routledge’s series of short books called Why It's OK: The Ethics and Aesthetics of How We Live. Per Bauhn’s Animal Suffering, Human Rights, and the Virtue of Justice (2023) is from Palgrave Pivot, which publishes books falling somewhere between journal articles and monographs. Shahar’s book is worth reading: it’s well-written, raising interesting questions, and offering a coherent defence of meat. Bauhn’s book …

Design And Analysis Of 3d Cassegrain Antenna Using Hfss, Andrew Wu, Dean Arakaki
Electrical Engineering
Parabolic antennas offer high gain and narrow beamwidth by employing a reflector to collimate radio waves. Dual reflectors reduce antenna system size over single reflectors and increase design optimization options. This paper introduces a detailed HFSS-based Cassegrain dual reflector design procedure for antenna design engineers. A stripline power splitter excites a 4x4 patch feed array. The parameterized model illustrates performance tradeoffs to meet system operating requirements.

A Methodology For Converting An Engineering Program From Quarters To Semesters, Allen Estes, Brent Nuttall, Craig Baltimore, Peter T. Laursen, Michael James Deigert, Cole C. Mcdaniel
Architectural Engineering
California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo has offered classes on the quarter system since its inception in 1946. In the Fall of 2021, the university was mandated to move to the semester system by Fall 2026. After researching the literature and interviewing universities that had made the same conversion in the past, it became apparent that no suggested methodology for making this conversion was available. This paper chronicles the conversion to semester effort to date and suggests a formalized methodology that other institutions can use if found in the same situation.
Some challenges are that initial information from …

California Off-Road Engines And Components Life Span Assessment, Michael Mccullough, Lynn Hamilton
Agribusiness
The useful life and warranty periods for off-road equipment in California for engines rated at 37 kilowatts (kW) and greater have not been updated since the Tier 1 rule phased in from 1996 to 2000; for engines rated below 37 kW, not since the Tier 2 and Tier 3 rules phased in from 2000 to 2008. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) staff is seeking information regarding useful life and warranty to evaluate whether amendments to those requirements are necessary after two decades of technology advancement.
Cal Poly researchers called 55 service providers across the state of California to collect …
Reconceptualizing Citation Practices As “Feminist Memory”, Lc Santangelo
Reconceptualizing Citation Practices As “Feminist Memory”, Lc Santangelo
Feminist Pedagogy
Relying on feminist theory, this Original Teaching Activity foregrounds citation as celebration, rather than chore, to encourage students to rethink previous assumptions. In all, the lesson hopes to show students that citation connects scholars to one another and therefore merits our careful attention, at the same time it makes visible preconceived notions that limit how we define "scholarship."
On Teaching Diversity And Inclusion, Clara Bradbury-Rance
On Teaching Diversity And Inclusion, Clara Bradbury-Rance
Feminist Pedagogy
In 2020, I was asked to design a module called “Diversity and Inclusion in Practice” for a new online MA. To design a module around this theme was to reckon with a paradox. Scholars such as Sara Ahmed, working across feminist, queer, and critical race studies, have given us theoretical and methodological frameworks not simply for celebrating “diversity” but for exploring this term itself as a function of power. While the use of terms such as diversity and inclusion may be a strategic necessity for social justice work around higher education’s current agenda, this “language of diversity” (Ahmed 2012: 51) …

Queering/Querying Educational Spaces: The Lgbtqia2+ Learning And Affirming Challenge, Jennifer L. Bonnet, Liliana Herakova, Tausif Karim
Feminist Pedagogy
Legislation regulating learning content and approaches seek to limit exposure to and consideration of non-cis-heteronormative ways of being and knowing (Sawchuk, 2022). Denial of access to a more difference-affirming curricula reinforces hegemonic cultural norms (Chen & Lawless, 2018). Research on the college experiences of LGBTQIA2+ identifying individuals indicates a generally chilly campus climate, recognizing that “colleges and universities have historically been shaped by and for cisgender, straight individuals” (Pryor, 2017, p. 36). Educators can play a key role in reshaping this reality by co-constructing affirming environments where learners can generatively engage with difference and grow their capacities for cultural responsiveness …

Reimaging Feminist Futures Through Complaint-Jar Activity, Sritama Chatterjee
Feminist Pedagogy
In this article, I describe and reflect on my experience developing and implementing a “complaint jar activity”, in a writing-intensive, literature general-education class titled, “Women and Literature” themed on Feminist Futures: Place, Theory and Method. My article follows Sara Ahmed’s invitation to make space for the messy and complex nature of “complaint activism” as a form of feminist work in the academy while at the same time being attentive to the small transformations that the classroom can bring, at a time of increasing anti-intellectualism. Through a focus on the complaint-jar activity, I grapple with the tension between complaints as a …
College Teaching As Care Work, Julie Collins-Dogrul
College Teaching As Care Work, Julie Collins-Dogrul
Feminist Pedagogy
Sociology and higher education pedagogy scholars argue that college teaching is care work. I analyze reader comments generated by two essays published in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed about academic care work and find that many commentators think women should care less. Commenters argued that care work was detrimental to student development and faculty performance. In contrast, I argue that care work promotes learning. What is needed are institutions that make it clear that care work is an expectation for all professors, that provide training to enhance care in the classroom, office, lab, and the field, …

“I Can’T Learn When I’M Hungry”: Responding To U.S. College Student Basic Needs Insecurity In Pedagogy And Praxis, Jasmine R. Linabary, Rebecca Rodriguez Carey
Feminist Pedagogy
Food insecurity and other basic needs insecurities were pressing concerns for U.S. college students prior to the COVID-19 crisis and are even more so now. These issues disproportionately impact minoritized students, making addressing basic needs an issue of educational equity. As feminist teacher-scholars, we reflect in this essay on what it means to teach in the context of student basic needs insecurities, drawing on our experiences from launching an interdisciplinary initiative dedicated to combatting food insecurity on our campus. In doing so, we seek to catalyze changes within and beyond the classroom to better support students.
