Electrical Engineering
A report is presented on the design, fabrication, testing, and modeling of single-heterojunction Al0.27Ga0.73As/Ga p-i-n photodiodes for use as components in optical receivers. The photodiodes are grown by molecular beam epitaxy and fabricated as 1100-μm2 mesa structures. At 5-V reverse bias and 850 nm, 100 fF of capacitance, 90 pA of leakage current, 73% external quantum efficiency, <2% reflectivity, and 22-GHz bandwidths are typically measured.

A point is placed at random on the real line according to some known distribution F, and a search is made for this point, beginning at some starting points s on the line, and moving along the line according to some function x(t). The objective of this article is to maximize the probability of finding the point while traveling at most d units. Characterizations of simple optimal searches are found for arbitrary distributions, for continuous distributions with continuous density everywhere (e.g., normal, Cauchy, triangular), and for continuous distributions with density which is continuous on its support (e.g., exponential, …

The frequency of use and the marginal costs and marginal value products of mastitis control practices on somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield are investigated. A survey of current management practices is combined with Dairy Herd Improvement production information to determine the relationships between milk yield, SCC, management practices, and production and producer characteristics under field conditions. The relationships are modeled and compared at the cow and herd level. A moment-generating approach is used in the herd model to determine which, if any, practices are risk reducing. The SCC for an individual cow is a better indicator of milk …

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
This paper evaluates the tardiness performance of a sampling-based adaptive heuristic in a dynamic manufacturing environment. A test bed, following a real world manufacturing system, has been developed. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in this simulated environment. After fine tuning the algorithm, it has been tested in various shop conditions. The results of these simulation studies are summarized.
