The Prophet Disarmed: Milton And The Quakers, Steven Marx
The Prophet Disarmed: Milton And The Quakers, Steven Marx
English
The question of war or peace troubled sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe as much as it troubles our own time. Organized violence-the systematic infliction of irrevocable harm upon one group of human beings by another-was the activity by which the modern nation-state originated, defined itself, rose and fell. During those centuries, most Europeans affirmed, or at least accepted war as the final arbiter of what happened in history. But a significant minority, whether because of inner illumination, abstract reasoning, or the outcome of experience, disputed the primacy of war, maintaining that organized violence was intrinsically evil and that its purposed …

During 1924, when jobs for college students were difficult to find in San Luis Obispo, Calif., a group of entrepreneurial students at the California Polytechnic School negotiated an $80 bank loan from a local lender to raise chickens. Parents and college faculty cosigned the loan, and thus was born the Agricultural Enterprise Program.
Riemannian Geometry Of Orbifolds, Joseph Ernest Borzellino
Riemannian Geometry Of Orbifolds, Joseph Ernest Borzellino
Mathematics
We investigate generalizations of many theorems of Riemannian geometry to Riemannian orbifolds. Basic definitions and many examples are given. It is shown that Riemannian orbifolds inherit a natural stratified length space structure. A version of Toponogov's triangle comparison theorem for Riemannian orbifolds is proven. A structure theorem for minimizing curves shows that such curves cannot pass through the singular set. A generalization of the Bishop relative volume comparison theorem is presented. The maximal diameter theorem of Cheng is generalized. A finiteness result and convergence result is proven for good Riemannian orbifolds, and the existence of a closed geodesic is shown …

Phosphorus Sorption By Gravels In Lateritic Soils, D. M. Weaver, G. S.P. Ritchie, R. J. Gilkes
Phosphorus Sorption By Gravels In Lateritic Soils, D. M. Weaver, G. S.P. Ritchie, R. J. Gilkes
Food Science and Nutrition
The effect of sesquioxidic gravels (>2 mm size fraction) on phosphorus sorption by two gravelly lateritic soils was investigated by phosphorus sorption experiments, X-ray diffraction, autoradiography and electron microscopy. In one soil the abundance and size of gravels decreased downslope. As the gravel content of both soils increased (13-61%), the proportion of large (>8 mm) gravels increased (0-70%). Phosphorus sorption increased in the order: (>2 mm fraction) < (whole soils) < (2 mm) decreased with increasing gravel size and increased with increasing time. Phosphorus sorption by whole soils decreased with increasing gravel content. Phosphorus sorption by the >2 mm fraction was principally by the external surfaces of the gravels. The estimation of phosphorus application rates for lateritic soils depended on the amount of phosphorus required by the plant …
A P-Adic Cohomological Method For The Weierstrass Family And Its Zeta Invariants, Goro Kato
A P-Adic Cohomological Method For The Weierstrass Family And Its Zeta Invariants, Goro Kato
Mathematics
After a survey of the Weierstrass family and cohomology, we compute the lifted homology of the Weierstrass family with compact supports so that explicit formulae for the zeta function of each fibre of the Weierstrass family may be obtained. The (co-)homology theory that we use is found in [L1], [L2] and [L3]. Therefore, this article can be regarded as an application of Lubkin's p-adic theory of cohomologies to an algebraic family called the Weierstrass scheme over the ring (Z/pZ)[g2,g3). The cohomological background for the computation will be rather carefully exploited.

Divergent Perceptions Of Lesbians: A Comparison Of Lesbian Self-Perceptions And Heterosexual Perceptions, Denise C. Viss, Shawn M. Burn
Divergent Perceptions Of Lesbians: A Comparison Of Lesbian Self-Perceptions And Heterosexual Perceptions, Denise C. Viss, Shawn M. Burn
Psychology and Child Development
Social-psychological research on stereotyping was applied to lesbianism among American college students. The hypothesis that stereotypes of lesbians are often inaccurate predictors of individual lesbians was supported. Using stereotypes of lesbians identified by previous research, lesbians rated themselves on a series of bipolar stereotypical adjectives, and a comparison group of nonlesbians rated lesbians as a group on these same adjectives. Significant differences were found on 16 of the 21 adjectives. Knowing a lesbian personally did not influence heterosexuals' ratings, suggesting the resistance of stereotypes to change.
A Radiant Flow Reactor For High-Temperature Reactivity Studies Of Pulverized Solids, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa
A Radiant Flow Reactor For High-Temperature Reactivity Studies Of Pulverized Solids, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa
Mechanical Engineering
Our radiant two‐phase flow reactor presents several new possibilities for high‐temperature reactivity studies. Most importantly, the thermal histories of the suspension and entrainment gas can be independently regulated over wide ranges. At low suspension loadings, outlet temperatures can differ by hundreds of degrees and gas temperatures are low enough to inhibit hydrocarbon cracking chemistry, so primary products are quenched as soon as they are expelled. With coal suspensions, tars were generated with the highest H/C ratio and lowest proton aromaticity ever reported. Alternatively, particles and gas can be heated at similar rates to promote secondary chemistry by increasing particle loading. …
Suppressed Nitrogen Evolution From Coal-Derived Soot And Low-Volatility Coal Chars, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa
Suppressed Nitrogen Evolution From Coal-Derived Soot And Low-Volatility Coal Chars, John C. Chen, Stephen Niksa
Mechanical Engineering
This laboratory study uses a novel furnace to resolve nitrogen evolution during the three stages of pulverized coal combustion: primary devolatilization, secondary pyrolysis, and combustion. The behavior of six coals depicts continuous rank variations, as well as suppressed nitrogen evolution from low volatility coals. During primary devolatilization of any coal, aromatic compounds in tar and oils are virtually the only shuttles for nitrogen out of the coal matrix. The small amounts of HCN observed while primary devolatilization winds down probably come from the char, because char particles are significantly hotter than tar in these experiments. Secondary pyrolysis promotes additional HCN …

One-Sided Refinements Of The Strong Law Of Large Numbers And The Glivenko-Cantelli Theorem, David Gilat, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
A one-sided refinement of the strong law of large numbers is found for which the partial weighted sums not only converge almost surely to the expected value, but also the convergence is such that eventually the partial sums all exceed the expected value. The new weights are distribution-free, depending only on the relative ranks of the observations. A similar refinement of the Glivenko-Cantelli theorem is obtained, in which a new empirical distribution function not only has the usual uniformly almost-sure convergence property of the classical empirical distribution function, but also has the property that all its quantiles converge almost surely. …

Let Z1, Z2 , .. . , Zn be independent 0-1-valued random variables. A gambler gels a. reward 1 if he stop8 a.t the time of the last success and otherwise gets no reward. A simple comparison with a Poisson process is used to show that a prophet can do at most e times as well as the gambler using an optimal stopping time. For fixed n, the best constant is (n/(n -l ))"-1.

Fusions Of A Probability Distribution, J. Elton, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
Starting with a Borel probability measure P on X (where X is a separable Banach space or a compact metrizable convex subset of a locally convex topological vector space), the class F(P), called the fusions of P, consists of all Borel probability measures on X which can be obtained from P by fusing parts of the mass of P, that is, by collapsing parts of the mass of P to their respective barycenters. The class F(P) is shown to be convex, and the ordering induced on the space of all Borel probability …

Kinesiology and Public Health
The role of physical illness as a factor of mental illness and the positive effects of exercise on psychological functioning are examined A study of six persons who participated in a fitness program as an adjunct to an existing psychoeducational program is discussed. Methodology, description of the students, results, and personal responses to the fitness program are described. outcomes include a slight decrease in body fat and an increase in cardiovascular fitness as measured by oxygen intake. Although a formal measure of self esteem did not show changes over the course of the study, students report positive attitude changes. An …
A Binary Tree Decomposition Space Of Permutation Statistics, Don Rawlings
A Binary Tree Decomposition Space Of Permutation Statistics, Don Rawlings
Mathematics
Based on the binary tree decomposition of a permutation, a natural vector space of permutation statistics is defined. Besides containing many well known permutation statistics, this space provides the general context for an archetypal recurrence relationship that contains most of the classic combinatorial sequences and some of their known generalizations.
Comparison Of Timing Jitter In External And Monolithic Cavity Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers, Dennis J. Derickson, P. A. Morton, J. E. Bowers, R. L. Thornton
Comparison Of Timing Jitter In External And Monolithic Cavity Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers, Dennis J. Derickson, P. A. Morton, J. E. Bowers, R. L. Thornton
Electrical Engineering
A comprehensive timing jitter comparison is made for mode-locked semiconductor lasers using active, passive, and hybrid mode-locking techniques in both external and monolithic cavity configurations. Active mode locking gives the lowest residual rms timing jitter of 65 fs (150 Hz-50 MHz), followed by the hybrid and passive mode-locking techniques. It is found that monolithic cavity devices with all active waveguides have higher timing jitter levels than the comparable external cavity case.

Unsteady Flow In Vertical, Converging Tubes, Hamid Johari, William W. Durgin
Unsteady Flow In Vertical, Converging Tubes, Hamid Johari, William W. Durgin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
The discharge of liquids from vertical tubes with various contraction geometries was studied via the unsteady Bernoulli equation. The temporal variations of the exit velocity and fluid level in the tube were found from the numerical integration of nonlinear differential equations. Sudden, quadratic, and exponential contraction geometries were considered. For inlet to exit area ratios greater than two, the flow initially accelerates to a maximum speed and then it decelerates for the geometries studied. The exponential contraction has the shortest discharge time. The solutions also reveal that the largest possible velocity and the shortest discharge time are achieved in a …
