Pedogenic Processes In Thick Sand Deposits On A Marine Terrace, Central California, Lynn E. Moody, R. C. Graham Jan 1994

Pedogenic Processes In Thick Sand Deposits On A Marine Terrace, Central California, Lynn E. Moody, R. C. Graham

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Pedological studies in thick sedimentary sequences are generally limited to the upper few meters. Field investigation of thick (~50 m) sand deposits on an emergent Pleistocene marine terrace in central California showed morphological differences between the solum at the surface and the deep regolith. Based on morphological and geochemical features, four units were identified within the regolith. Two zones of active pedogenesis occur within three of these units. The surficial unit is in Holocene sand deposits (mixed, thermic, Argic Xeropsamments), and has darkened A horizons, a slightly reddened subsoil, and incipient lamellae at the depth of wetting front infiltration. These …

Amelioration Of Subsurface Acidity In Sandy Soils In Low Rainfall Regions. I. Responses Of Wheat And Lupins To Surface-Applied Gypsum And Lime, C. D. A. Mclay, G. S.P. Ritchie, W. M. Porter Jan 1994

Amelioration Of Subsurface Acidity In Sandy Soils In Low Rainfall Regions. I. Responses Of Wheat And Lupins To Surface-Applied Gypsum And Lime, C. D. A. Mclay, G. S.P. Ritchie, W. M. Porter

Food Science and Nutrition

Amelioration of subsoil acidity using gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) or lime (CaCO3) was studied on sandy textured soils with low water holding capacity in a low rainfall environment. Field trials were established in 1989 at two sites on yellow sandplain soils to investigate whether different rates, sources and combinations of gypsum and lime application could be used to increase wheat and lupin yields. Gypsum increased wheat yields by up to 45% in the first two growing seasons whereas lime increased wheat yields by up to only 15% in the second season. The highest yields were generally …

Changes In Water Allocation Mechanisms For California Agriculture, David Zilberman, Neal Macdougall, Farhed Shah Jan 1994

Changes In Water Allocation Mechanisms For California Agriculture, David Zilberman, Neal Macdougall, Farhed Shah

Agribusiness

Existing institutions allocating water in California reflect prior appropriation water rights established when water was abundant. These allocation rules queue users and do not encourage water conservation. increased water scarcity and growing valuation of water's environmental benefits are inducing a transition to water allocation mechanisms that increase water efficiency in agriculture. Transferable rights systems will lead to market-like water allocation, induce farmers to adopt water conservation technology, and may not face strong objection from senior water rights holders. One must weigh the efficiency gains associated with transition from water rights to water markets against the transaction costs associated with installing …

Nutrient Uptake And Organic Acid Anion Metabolism In Lupins And Peas Supplied With Nitrate, S. P. Loss, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1994

Nutrient Uptake And Organic Acid Anion Metabolism In Lupins And Peas Supplied With Nitrate, S. P. Loss, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Unlike many plants reported in the literature, lupins do not excrete OH− in amounts equivalent to the net excess of inorganic anion uptake over inorganic cation uptake. To investigate the mechanisms involved in the maintenance of charge balance, nutrient uptake and organic anion accumulation of lupins and peas supplied with a range of NO3− concentrations, were compared. Lupins absorbed less NO3− than peas on a dry weight basis, which largely ACCOUNTED for the smaller excess of anion uptake over cation uptake in lupins than in peas at the same NO3− supply. When anion uptake exceeded cation uptake, peas excreted an …

The Splitting Theorem For Orbifolds, Joseph Borzellino, Shun-Hui Zhu Jan 1994

The Splitting Theorem For Orbifolds, Joseph Borzellino, Shun-Hui Zhu

Mathematics

In this paper we wish to examine a generalization of the splitting theorem of Cheeger–Gromoll [CG] to Riemannian orbifolds. Roughly speaking, a Riemannian orbifold is a metric space locally modelled on quotients of Rie- mannian manifolds by finite groups of isometries. The term orbifold was coined by W. Thurston [T] sometime around the year 1976–77. The term is meant to suggest the orbit space of a group action on a manifold. A similar concept was introduced by I. Satake in 1956, where he used the term V–manifold (See [S1]). The “V” was meant to suggest a cone–like singularity. Since then, …

Models For Predicting The Lower Limit Of The Canopy-Air Temperature Difference Of Two Cool Season Grasses, Dennis L. Martin, David J. Wehner, C. S. Throssell Jan 1994

Models For Predicting The Lower Limit Of The Canopy-Air Temperature Difference Of Two Cool Season Grasses, Dennis L. Martin, David J. Wehner, C. S. Throssell

Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship

Estimation of the lower limit of the canopy-air temperature differential, (Tc–Ta)LL, is required for calculation of an empirically-based crop water stress, index. This research determined the complexity of model needed for accurate estimation of (Tc–Ta)LL for several field grown cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and for creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L. var. palustris (Huds.) Farw.). Regression models using vapor pressure deficit of the air (VPD), net radiation load (Rn), and wind speed (WS) were developed for predicting (Tc–Ta …

Error Recovery In Intelligent Robotic Workcells, R. D. Borchelt, Sema E. Alptekin Jan 1994

Error Recovery In Intelligent Robotic Workcells, R. D. Borchelt, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

This paper focuses on the requirements for achieving automated diagnosis and error recovery in a robotic assembly cell. Untended robust operation is the goal which is discussed, and the use of a knowledge-base oriented diagnostic/control system to support on-line error recovery is advocated. It is proposed that error recovery attempts should be made, not only based on information gathered by system sensors, but also by using additional cell-specific knowledge pertaining to recovery strategies. Recovery attempts are to be made even in the absence of complete diagnosis, in order to gather additional information. A control structure developed to implement this approach …

Dual-Level Approach For Seismic Design Of Asymmetric-Plan Buildings, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra Jan 1994

Dual-Level Approach For Seismic Design Of Asymmetric-Plan Buildings, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Buildings should be designed to resist moderate ground motion without structural damage and resist intense ground motion with controlled damage. However, most codes do not consider both these requirements explicitly and specify a single design earthquake that generally corresponds to intense ground motion. Investigated in this study is the response of one-story, asymmetric-plan systems designed according to torsional provisions of seismic codes to the two levels of ground motions with the objective of evaluating whether such systems satisfy these requirements. The presented results demonstrate that such systems may not remain elastic during moderate ground motion resulting in structural damage and …

An Optimization Model Of The Dual-Purpose Cattle Production System In The Humid Lowlands Of Venezuela, Charles F. Nicholson, David R. Lee, Richard N. Boisvert, Robert W. Blake, Isabella C. Urbina Jan 1994

An Optimization Model Of The Dual-Purpose Cattle Production System In The Humid Lowlands Of Venezuela, Charles F. Nicholson, David R. Lee, Richard N. Boisvert, Robert W. Blake, Isabella C. Urbina

Agribusiness

We developed a deterministic, multi-period linear programming (LP) model of the dual-purpose (milk-beef) cattle production system in the Sur del Lago region of Venezuela. The LP model selected animal, forage, and purchased feed activities subject to nutritional, land, and herd composition constraints to maximize discounted herd net margin. A cattle nutrition model provided original coefficients for feeds and animal nutrient requirements. Revised coefficients resulted from an iterative procedure to avoid errors from the interaction between diet and requirements. Model applications demonstrated that alternatives to traditional feeding practices are profitable and nutritionally feasible. However, the benefits of alternative nutritional management depend …

Fierstine, Sallie C. Beavers, Federico Achaval, Hiroyuki Suganuma, Robert L. Pitman, Yuichiro Yamaguchi, Carlos Ma. Prigioni

Biological Sciences

Billfishes have long been known to impale a great variety of objects, but there are only two brief, obscure records of marine turtles being speared. Details are presented on these two, as well as on two other confirmed records; data from two additional unconfirmed records are also presented. In total, three species of marine turtles are known to have been impaled by three species of billfishes; a fourth species of fish and a fourth species turtle are listed in an unconfirmed case. Records come from the eastern and western Pacific as well as the eastern Atlantic. Of the four confirmed …

Joint And Separate Score Tests For State Dependence And Unobserved Heterogeneity, Sanjiv Jaggia, Pravin K. Trivedi Jan 1994

Joint And Separate Score Tests For State Dependence And Unobserved Heterogeneity, Sanjiv Jaggia, Pravin K. Trivedi

Economics

The paper compares separate, conditional, and joint score tests of duration dependence and unobserved heterogeneity when the null is the exponential model and the alternative is the heterogeneous Weibull model. The score tests based on the conditional score function include the Neyman C(x) test as a special case. An examination of the non-null distribution of the joint test explains when all score tests have low power in the presence of multiple misspecifications. Monte Carlo experiments show that the conditional score tests are superior to the standard separate tests which confound unobserved heterogeneity and duration dependence.

Changes In The Forms Of Cadmium With Time In Some Western Australian Soils, S. S. Mann, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1994

Changes In The Forms Of Cadmium With Time In Some Western Australian Soils, S. S. Mann, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Changes in the forms of Cd with time could affect its uptake by plants and hence potential toxicity to animals and humans. The effect of time on the forms of native and added Cd was studied in four West Australian soils which differed in their clay, hydrous oxide and organic matter content. Sequential extraction of soluble (KCl), exchangeable (BaCl2), bound to organic matter (NaOCl), bound to oxides/clays (ammonium oxalate) and residual (concentrated acids) forms of Cd was carried out at different time intervals after the addition of Cd.
The Cd that was added to the soils transformed with …

Phosphorus Leaching In Soils Amended With Piggery Effluent Or Lime Residues From Effluent Treatment, D. M. Weaver, G. S.P. Ritchie Jan 1994

Phosphorus Leaching In Soils Amended With Piggery Effluent Or Lime Residues From Effluent Treatment, D. M. Weaver, G. S.P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

Phosphorus (P) in wastes from piggeries may contribute to the eutrophication of waterways if not disposed of appropriately. Phosphorus leaching, from three soils with different P sorption characteristics (two with low P retention and one with moderate P retention) when treated with piggery effluent (with or without struvite), was investigated using batch and leaching experiments. The leaching of P retained in soil from the application of struvite effluent was determined. In addition, P leaching from lime residues (resulting from the treatment of piggery effluent with lime to remove P) was determined in comparison to superphosphate when applied to the same …

Phosphorus Removal From Piggery Effluents Of Varying Quality Using Lime And Physico-Chemical Treatment Methods., D. M. Weaver, G. S. P. Ritchie

Food Science and Nutrition

The choice of management practices for the treatment of piggery effluent prior to its disposal to waterways or land is governed by the desire to simultaneously minimise the cost of treatment whilst minimising pollution of the environment. Laboratory experiments were conducted to compare the removal of total and total filterable phosphorus (P) (μm) from ortho-phosphate solutions or piggery effluent by hydrated lime or lime kiln dust alone, or from recycled piggery effluent by lime and physico-chemical treatment methods. In addition, the ability of lime to remove P from recycled piggery effluent at an intensive piggery was assessed.

Most P …

The Importance Of Considering Size Effect Along The Cutting Edge In Predicting The Effective Lead Angle For Turning, William J. Endres, Daniel Waldorf Jan 1994

The Importance Of Considering Size Effect Along The Cutting Edge In Predicting The Effective Lead Angle For Turning, William J. Endres, Daniel Waldorf

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The concept of an effective orthogonal cutting edge in turning is considered. The orientation of this edge in the radial-longitudinal plane, as commonly modeled through an effective lead angle, is studied. The methods of effective lead angle prediction used in numerous previously developed force models are plagued with large errors over ranges of process inputs, in particular feed rate and depth of cut. Four previously developed methods of effective lead angle prediction are reviewed and compared to a new method presented here. This new method accounts for the size effect as introduced through the variation in chip thickness along the …

Spatial And Temporal Aspects Of Populations Revealed By Mitochondrial Dna, Francis X. Villablanca Jan 1994

Spatial And Temporal Aspects Of Populations Revealed By Mitochondrial Dna, Francis X. Villablanca

Biological Sciences

The evolutionary analysis of DNA sequences bridges phylogenetics and population genetics. Ancient DNA (aDNA) alJows the study of extinct genotypes, populations, and species, as well as dichronic comparisons of extant populations and species. Thus a DNA forges an empirical link between history and two inherently historical fields of research. Fortunately, the conceptual frameworks of phylogenetics and population genetics can easily be extended to encompass advances being made in the study of aDNA.
