Efficacy Of Herbicide Application Methods Used To Control Tanoak (Lithocarpus Densiflorus) In An Uneven-Aged Coast Redwood Management Context, Douglas D. Piirto, Brenda Smith, Eric K. Huff, Scott T. Robinson
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Three methods of tanoak (Lithocarpus densiflorus [Hook. & Arn.] Rehd.) control involving the application of the amine or ester form of triclopyr were evaluated in this coast redwood uneven-aged forest management study of herbicides. A cut-stump application with the amine form of triclopyr (Garlon 3A), frill cut with the amine form of triclopyr, basal-bark (outer surface) with the ester form of triclopyr (Garlon 4), and an untreated control were replicated three times. The tanoak control results in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) and/ or coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don] Endl.) predominated stands obtained in earlier studies …

Testing Of Concrete Under Closed-Loop Control, Ravindra Gettu, Barzin Mobasher, Sergio Carmona, Daniel C. Jansen
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Closed-loop testing systems provide the ability to directly control the deformation of the loaded specimen. This considerably enhances the precision, stability, and scope of the experiments. Closed-loop machines can be used to determine the stable response of test specimen or structure by monitoring and controlling the physical quantities that are sensitive to its behavior. The importance of the various components of the closed-loop controlled system and the test configuration is reviewed in the paper. The most critical aspect of designing the test is the choice of the controlled variable. With appropriate controlled variables and good system performance, several interesting and …

Estimating Value Contribution Of Tree And Stand Condition, R. Joss Hanna, Richard P. Thompson, Douglas D. Piirto, Jay E. Noel
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
Key issues in encouraging forest management at the interface level in the oak woodlands are fire abatement, stand improvement, infection reduction, and hazard tree removal. The development of effective management prescriptions for stand improvement and economic returns provide guidance for homeowners, appraisers, and realtors. The purpose of this research project was to determine the effects of stand characteristics (e.g., structure, density and health) on the value of urban/interface forested properties. In this study, the forest characteristic coefficients were statistically significant with an estimated value contribution of about $30,000 each, or over 22 percent of the median property’s value ($262,079).

Host-Plant Effects On The Behavior Of Eretmocerus Sp. Nr. Californicus Females Raised From Melon, David H. Headrick, Thomas S. Bellows, Jr., Thomas M. Perring
Host-Plant Effects On The Behavior Of Eretmocerus Sp. Nr. Californicus Females Raised From Melon, David H. Headrick, Thomas S. Bellows, Jr., Thomas M. Perring
Horticulture and Crop Science
The behaviors of female Eretmocerus sp. nr. californiens raised from Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring on melon, Cucumis melo L., were analysed on four different host plant species (cotton, melon, sweet potato and Abutilon theophrasti Medic). Comparison with previously published results of similarly treated females reared from sweet potato plants showed performance related differences leading to oviposition. In the present study, the generalized behavioral pathway (walking, host- encounter, antennation, probing and oviposition) did not vary among host plant species for melon- reared parasitoid females. Host assessment by antennation leading to host acceptance for probing varied from 10.5- 12.3 sec among …
Comparison Of Load Restriction Timings Determined Using Fhwa Guidelines And Frost Tubes, Nazli Yesiller, Craig H. Benson, Peter J. Bosscher
Comparison Of Load Restriction Timings Determined Using Fhwa Guidelines And Frost Tubes, Nazli Yesiller, Craig H. Benson, Peter J. Bosscher
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Federal Highway Administration (FHwA) method and frost-tube measurements are used in Wisconsin to determine the timing and duration of spring load restrictions. In both methods, depth of freeze or thaw is used to determine when to apply load restrictions and to determine their duration. Average daily air temperatures are used in the FHwA method to predict the start and end of freeze and/or thaw. Frost tubes are used to directly determine depth of freeze and/or thaw. An analysis is conducted to compare these two methods using air-temperature data (for the FHwA method) and frost-tube data obtained in Wisconsin. The …

Bottom Half Of The Pool: Who Is Admitted To Teacher Education?, George J. Petersen, Kathryne M. Speaker
Bottom Half Of The Pool: Who Is Admitted To Teacher Education?, George J. Petersen, Kathryne M. Speaker
Graduate Studies in Education
This study investigated the criteria for admission to teacher education at 50 NCATE accredited undergraduate universities. These universities varied in geographical location, public and private affiliation and size of student enrollment. The study analyzed and evaluated admission criteria in light of recent educational reforms that call for higher standards and more qualified candidates in order to ascertain whether the universities had actually implemented more demanding performance based criteria for teacher candidate selection. Based on the findings, the study identified the absence of standardized admission criteria and consistent policies of ongoing assessment. It proposed a balanced integration of both performance based …
