Strong Laws For L- And U-Statistics, J. Aaronson, R. Burton, H. Dehling, D. Gilat, Theodore P. Hill, B. Weiss Jul 1996

Strong Laws For L- And U-Statistics, J. Aaronson, R. Burton, H. Dehling, D. Gilat, Theodore P. Hill, B. Weiss

Research Scholars in Residence

Strong laws of large numbers are given for L-statistics (linear combinations of order statistics) and for U-statistics (averages of kernels of random samples) for ergodic stationary processes, extending classical theorems of Hoeffding and of Helmers for iid sequences. Examples are given to show that strong and even weak convergence may fail if the given sufficient conditions are not satisfied, and an application is given to estimation of correlation dimension of invariant measures.

Source Reduction And Recycling Programs At A Joint Venture Automobile Assembly Plant, Stuart E. Rupp, Samuel A. Vigil Jun 1996

Source Reduction And Recycling Programs At A Joint Venture Automobile Assembly Plant, Stuart E. Rupp, Samuel A. Vigil

Civil and Environmental Engineering

New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) is a vehicle assembly plant in Fremont, California. NUMMI began operations in 1984 as ajoint venture of General Motors Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation. In 1995, NUMMI produced 94,280 Geo Prizms, 135,112 Toyota Corollas, and 123,257 Toyota Tacoma trucks. NUMMI conducts its manufacturing operations using the Toyota Production System (TPS). A key element of TPS is the elimination of waste. This includes wasted energy, space, labor, and production materials. Waste reduction, i.e., source reduction, is part of NUMMI's corporate culture and every team member is encouraged to continuously seek out new waste reduction opportunities. …

Modeling Of Macroscopic/Microscopic Transport Phenomena In Zeolite Crystal Solutions Under Microgravity Conditions, Andreas Alexandrou, Nikos A. Gatsonis, William W. Durgin, Albert Sacco, Jr. Jun 1996

Modeling Of Macroscopic/Microscopic Transport Phenomena In Zeolite Crystal Solutions Under Microgravity Conditions, Andreas Alexandrou, Nikos A. Gatsonis, William W. Durgin, Albert Sacco, Jr.

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Crystals grown from special liquid solutions find important industrial applications. Most often the physics and chemistry of the growth processes are not well understood due to complex microscopic chemical and thermo-fluid phenomena. Microgravity could help elucidate these phenomena and allow the control of defect concentration and crystal size. We are proposing to study zeolites grown in silica solutions as a typical crystal growth system. By using macroscopic fluid dynamics, coupled with first-principle microscopic fluid physics and advanced particle simulations, we will study: (a) the effect of transport phenomena and nutrient flow under microgravity conditions along with (b) the nucleation process …

Issues Concerning The Eradication Or Establishment And Biological Control Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis Capitata(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), In California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden Jun 1996

Issues Concerning The Eradication Or Establishment And Biological Control Of The Mediterranean Fruit Fly, Ceratitis Capitata(Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), In California, David H. Headrick, Richard D. Goeden

Horticulture and Crop Science

Classical biological control is suggested as a tool worth developing now for possible future use in the integrated pest management of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), in California. Three factors that impact broadly on developing and implementing such a biological control program are: (1) the question of Medfly establishment, (2) quarantine considerations, and (3) agricultural and urban concerns. Each of these factors and their combined effects must be considered when discussing biological control of Medfly in California as shaped by historical perspectives on Medfly invasions, methods of Medfly eradication, and past biological control efforts against Medfly. We …

Massively Parallel Computation Of Large-Scale Spatial Price Equilibrium Models With Discriminatory Ad Valorem Tariffs, Anna Nagurney, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop Jun 1996

Massively Parallel Computation Of Large-Scale Spatial Price Equilibrium Models With Discriminatory Ad Valorem Tariffs, Anna Nagurney, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop

Agribusiness

In this paper, we develop a perfectly competitive spatial equilibrium model in price and quantity variables in the presence of discriminatory ad valorem tariffs, a widely used trade policy instrument. We derive the equilibrium conditions and formulate them as a variational inequality problem. An algorithm is then proposed for the computation of the equilibrium pattern and convergence results established. The algorithm resolves the problem into very simple subproblems, each of which can be solved simultaneously and in closed form. Finally, the algorithm is implemented on the massively parallel Thinking Machines CM-2 and CM-5 architectures, known as the Connection Machines, and …

Analysis Of The Elements Of Drag In Three-Dimensional Viscous And Inviscid Flows, Russell M. Cummings, M. B. Giles, G. N. Shrinivas Jun 1996

Analysis Of The Elements Of Drag In Three-Dimensional Viscous And Inviscid Flows, Russell M. Cummings, M. B. Giles, G. N. Shrinivas

Aerospace Engineering

This paper examines the analytical, experimental, and computational aspects of tlie determination of the drag acting on an aircraft in flight, with or without powered engines, for subsonic/transonic flow. Using a momentum approach, the drag is represented by an integral over a cross-flow plane at an arbitrary distance behind the aircraft Asymptotic evaluation of tlie integral shows tlie drag can be decomposed into three components corresponding to streamwise vorticity and variations in entropy and stagnation enthalpy. These are shown to be related to tlie established engineering concepts of induced drag, wave drag, profile drag and engine power and efficiency. This …

On Exchange Rates And Efficiency, Eric O'N. Fisher Jun 1996

On Exchange Rates And Efficiency, Eric O'N. Fisher

Economics

This paper analyzes an exchange economy in which several assets serve as stores of value and where agents have completely heterogeneous preferences and endowments. It describes the set of perfect foresight equilibria in which all assets have positive prices. There are international policies with determinate exchange rates if the world economy satisfies a strong efficiency criterion. Also, the corresponding equilibrium allocations are in the core of the world economy for certain international policies. Hence, a system of fixed exchange rates can support efficient allocations to the extent that countries agree on a division of seigniorage in the creation of international …

Graph Matching Using A Direct Classification Of Node Attendance, Fred Depiero, Mohan Trivedi, Steve Serbin Jun 1996

Graph Matching Using A Direct Classification Of Node Attendance, Fred Depiero, Mohan Trivedi, Steve Serbin

Electrical Engineering

An algorithm has been developed that finds isomorphisms between both graphs and subgraphs. The development is introduced in the object recognition problem domain. The method isolates matching subgraphs, finds a node-to-node mapping and reorders nodes, thus permitting a direct comparison to be made between the resultant graphs. The algorithm is of polynomial order. It yields approximate results, maintaining a performance level for subgraph isomorphisms at or above 95% under a wide variety of conditions and with varying levels of noise. The performance on the full size comparisons associated with graph isomorphisms has been found to be 100/100, also under a …
