Seismic Response Of Asymmetric Systems: Energy-Based Approach, Rakesh K. Goel Nov 1997

Seismic Response Of Asymmetric Systems: Energy-Based Approach, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

An energy-based approach has been used to investigate the seismic behavior of code-designed asymmetric-plan systems. The systems considered in this investigation had large eccentricities in both directions, were designed for bidirectional earthquake loading, and their responses were computed with both components of ground motion acting simultaneously. The presented results demonstrate that the total input energy is about the same whether the system plan is symmetric or asymmetric. Furthermore, flexible-side elements in asymmetric- plan systems may be more vulnerable to earthquakes than the same elements in symmetric-plan systems if they are not designed to accommodate the higher hysteretic-energy demands. This observation …

Earthquake Characteristics Of Bridges With Integral Abutments, Rakesh K. Goel Nov 1997

Earthquake Characteristics Of Bridges With Integral Abutments, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Earthquake analysis of bridges requires that the period and damping ratio be determined for each significant mode of vibration. Data on these vibration properties, identified from motions of bridges recorded during actual earthquake events, provide the most direct means of verifying and improving the current guidelines. Thus, the aim of this investigation was to measure the vibration properties of a two-span concrete bridge from its motions recorded during actual earthquake events. These data were then used to investigate how abutment participation affected the vibration properties of bridges with integral abutments. It is shown that the vibration period elongated and the …

Subsidies In Oligopoly Markets: A Welfare Comparison Between Symmetric And Asymmetric Costs, Stephen F. Hamilton, Rickard Sandin Nov 1997

Subsidies In Oligopoly Markets: A Welfare Comparison Between Symmetric And Asymmetric Costs, Stephen F. Hamilton, Rickard Sandin

Economics

Oligopolistic industries generally produce less than is socially desirable. As a result, the use of production subsidies is often suggested as a means of raising production toward the efficient level in imperfectly competitive markets. In cases where firms are equally efficient in producing the good, the common prescription is a policy of uniform subsidization, as suggested by Besley (1989).(1) When firms in an industry differ in cost efficiency, however, uniform subsidization involves subsidizing inefficient firms in the same manner as efficient firms. Consequently, uniform policy may be undesirable from a social perspective, particularly when the price-cost margins of inefficient firms …

Period Formulas For Moment-Resisting Frame Buildings, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra Nov 1997

Period Formulas For Moment-Resisting Frame Buildings, Rakesh K. Goel, Anil K. Chopra

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Most seismic codes specify empirical formulas to estimate the fundamental vibration period of buildings. Evaluated first in this paper are the formulas specified in present U.S. codes using the available data on the fundamental period of buildings "measured" from their motions recorded during eight California earthquakes, starting with the 1971 San Fernando earthquake and ending with the 1994 Northridge earthquake. It is shown that, although the code formulas provide periods that are generally shorter than measured periods, these formulas can be improved to provide better correlation with the measured data. Subsequently, improved formulas for estimating the fundamental periods of reinforced …

Meaningful Measures Of The Current Account, Eric O'N. Fisher, Youngsoo Woo Nov 1997

Meaningful Measures Of The Current Account, Eric O'N. Fisher, Youngsoo Woo

Economics

Since the conventional current account uses cash-flow accounting, it is potentially devoid of economic meaning. Assessing foreign assets at market values and including expected transfers from abroad, this paper reports two measures of the external surplus that are grounded in economic theory. The first measure is the aggregate generational current account, annual differences in the sum of net foreign assets across all current and future generations. The second measure is the generational profile of net foreign assets in a benchmark year. These ideas are implemented with data from Korea.

Tree Root Response To Circling Root Barriers, Laurence R. Costello, Clyde L. Elmore, Scott J. Steinmaus Nov 1997

Tree Root Response To Circling Root Barriers, Laurence R. Costello, Clyde L. Elmore, Scott J. Steinmaus

Biological Sciences

Root system size and distribution were measured for Raywood ash (Fraxinus oxycarpa 'Raywood') and Lombardy poplar (Populus nigra 'Italica') planted with and without circling root barriers. Trees with circling barriers had fewer numbers of roots than controls (no barriers), but mean root diameters were similar. Root depth 30 cm outside barriers was greater for trees with barriers, but at 90 and 150 cm away, depth was equivalent to controls. Roots tended to grow toward the soil surface after growing under the barriers. No consistent differences in root response to any of the four types of barriers tested were …

Irrigation Performance Measures: Efficiency And Uniformity, Charles M. Burt, Albert J. Clemmens, Theodor S. Strelkoff, Kenneth H. Solomon, Ronald D. Bliesner, Leland A. Hardy, Terry A. Howell, Dean E. Eisenhauer Nov 1997

Irrigation Performance Measures: Efficiency And Uniformity, Charles M. Burt, Albert J. Clemmens, Theodor S. Strelkoff, Kenneth H. Solomon, Ronald D. Bliesner, Leland A. Hardy, Terry A. Howell, Dean E. Eisenhauer

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

It is essential to standardize the definitions and approaches to quantifying various irrigation performance measures. The ASCE Task Committee on Defining Irrigation Efficiency and Uniformity provides a comprehensive examination of various performance indices such as irrigation efficiency, application efficiency, irrigation sagacity, distribution uniformity, and others. Consistency is provided among different irrigation methods and different scales. Clarification of common points of confusion is provided, and methods are proposed whereby the accuracy of numerical values of the performance indicators can be assessed. This issue has two companion papers that provide more detailed information on statistical distribution uniformity and the accuracy of irrigation …

Motion-Compensating Long-Term Memory Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod Oct 1997

Motion-Compensating Long-Term Memory Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod

Electrical Engineering

Motion-compensating long-term memory prediction extends the spatial displacement utilized in block-based hybrid video coding by a variable time delay permitting the use of more frames than the previously decoded one for motion compensation. The long-term memory covers the decoded frames of some seconds at encoder and decoder. We investigate the influence of memory size in our motion compensation scheme and analyze the trade-off between the bit-rates spent for motion compensated prediction and residual coding. Simulation results are obtained by integrating long-term memory prediction into an H.263 codec. PSNR improvements up to 2 dB for the Foreman sequence and 1.5 dB …

Reaction Of Dioxygen With A Cross-Conjugated Carbon-Carbon Double Bond In A Bis-Macrocycle Diiron Compound, D. Brent Macqueen, Christopher Lange, Melvin Calvin, John W. Otvos, Larry O. Spreer, Christian B. Allan, Anna Ganse, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

Dioxygen at atmospheric pressure attacks a cross-conjugated carbon-carbon double bond in a diiron complex to form two, like, keto macrocyclic iron(II) complexes. This reaction occurs with high yield in both solution and in the solid state. A dioxetane intermediate is, therefore, invoked. The rate of the reaction is very dependent on the nature of the axial ligands on the low-spin iron(II) ions in the bimetallic complex. The rate is at least a factor of 104 faster with DMF ligands than with CH3CN axial ligands. This rate dependence is explained by stabilization of a peroxo biradical transition state …
