Influence Of Canal Geometry And Dynamics On Controllability, Theodor S. Strelkoff, Jean Luc Deltour, Charles M. Burt, Albert J. Clemmens, Jean Pierre Baume

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

This paper presents the results of the Task Committee on Canal Automation Algorithms with regard to the influence of canal properties on the controllability of irrigation canals. While the control provided by individual algorithms was not evaluated, studies were performed to illustrate inherent hydraulic limitations—the inability of canal pools to recover rapidly from disturbances or flow perturbations. Studies were performed in nondimensional form to develop a better understanding of how pool properties influence pool response. Three such studies were performed. First, nondimensional backwater curves were developed for a range of canal conditions. The second study involved the propagation of waves …

The Restoration Of A Wwii Avenger Provides Projects For Wpi Students, Donald N. Zwiep, William W. Durgin, Nathan H. Mayo

Office of the Provost Scholarship

In 1970 WPI completely revised its traditional approach to engineering education. The resulting program, the WPI Plan, emphasized the use of projects as a distinctive process for achieving educational goals. Every student, as a degree requirement, had to successfully complete two major projects: one in a student's major field, the Major Qualifying Project (MQP) and the second, the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), which related science and technology to societal issues.

The IQP's related to the restoration of the WWII Avenger at Mayocraft, Inc. for the Collings Foundation in Stow, Massachusetts enabled the students working with the authors as advisors to …

Single Magnetic Domains In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Jin-Ping Zhang, Dennis A. Bazylinski Jan 1998

Single Magnetic Domains In Magnetotactic Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Jin-Ping Zhang, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria construct an internal, permanent magnetic dipole based on single magnetic domain particles of magnetite or greigite. The organisms exert a high degree of control over the size and morphology of the particles. This may be relevant in distinguishing biogenic from nonbiogenic iron mineral particles.

Translation And Interpretation Of Ella C. Deloria's "A Sioux Captive Rescued By His Wife", Kathleen Jeanette Martin

Ethnic Studies

In general, Native American communities provide a tradition of education for children based on oral narrative and storytelling. Oral narrative is indispensable in the understanding and maintenance of cultural traditions (Egan, 1987; Goody, 1995; Havelock, 1986) and displays cultural differences through language (Hymes, 1981) as well as providing the means for the continuation of community beliefs and traditions. Nora and Richard Dauenhauer (1990) note, Tlingit stories connect people and are "like a gaff hook reaching out across a distance and becoming hooked with another person who is hooked" (p. ix). Jerome Bruner (1986) identifies narrative as a way to put …

Interactive Image Cases For Medical Problem Solving, Erika Rogers, Barb Ericson

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The development of an intelligent assistance agent for diagnostic radiology faces a number of challenges: e.g., how to gain access to the knowledge used an such visual problem solving tasks, how to operationalize it for further processing, and how to present it an the most useful manner for diagnosis. Our previous work an this domain placed an emphasis on the first two issues, and has shown that both perception and problem solving need to be supported an these types of tasks. However, the interface to the underlying intelligence in our first prototypes did not reflect how medical practitioners physically interact …

Terminal Restriction Fragment Patterns (Trfps), A Rapid, Pcr-Based Method For The Comparison Of Complex Bacterial Communities, Brian G. Clement, Lucia E. Kehl, Kristin L. Debord, Christopher L. Kitts Jan 1998

Terminal Restriction Fragment Patterns (Trfps), A Rapid, Pcr-Based Method For The Comparison Of Complex Bacterial Communities, Brian G. Clement, Lucia E. Kehl, Kristin L. Debord, Christopher L. Kitts

Biological Sciences

Microbial populations in complex environmental samples are difficult to characterize; current techniques are incomplete and time consuming. We investigated a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method for rapidly comparing bacterial communities independent of culture or cloning. Community 16S rRNA genes were amplified and fluorescently labeled by PCR. The labeled products were digested by a restriction enzyme and the labeled, terminal restriction fragments (TRFs) were separated by electrophoresis and detected by laser-induced fluorescence on an automated gene sequencer. PCR parameters were optimized using an in vitro model community of known organisms. Community comparisons were made between deer fecal pellets, petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated sands …

A New Niche For Vibrio Logei, The Predominant Light Organ Symbiont Of Squids In The Genus Sepiola, Pat M. Fidopiastis, Sigurd Von Boletzky, Edward G. Ruby

Biological Sciences

Two genera of sepiolid squids—Euprymna, found primarily in shallow, coastal waters of Hawaii and the Western Pacific, and Sepiola, the deeper-, colder-water-dwelling Mediterranean and Atlantic squids—are known to recruit luminous bacteria into light organ symbioses. The light organ symbiont of Euprymna spp. is Vibrio fischeri, but until now, the light organ symbionts of Sepiola spp. have remained inadequately identified. We used a combination of molecular and physiological characteristics to reveal that the light organs of Sepiola affinis and Sepiola robusta contain a mixed population of Vibrio logei and V. fischeri, with V. logei comprising between …

Cultivating The National Body: A History Of Physical Culture In Republican China, Andrew D. Morris Jan 1998

Cultivating The National Body: A History Of Physical Culture In Republican China, Andrew D. Morris

History

This dissertation is a study of the role played by ideas and practices of physical culture (physical education, sports, recreation, physical fitness) in China over the first half of this century. My focus is on the connections between Chinese physical culture (in Chinese "tiyu," or literally "body-cultivation") and notions of the nation, modernity and a modern citizenry - namely, how the realm of tiyu served as a conduit for teaching Chinese citizens about modernity and the nation. The work is primarily based on Republican-era physical culture journals and bureaucratic reports, collected in libraries and archives in Hangzhou, Beijing, Nanjing and …

The article provides a thorough description of the facility, its administrative structure, and examples of how pre-existing organizational units made the transition into the new environment.

Stability And Performance Of Feedback Control Systems With Time Delays, M. S. Ali, Z. K. Hou, Mohammad N. Noori Jan 1998

Stability And Performance Of Feedback Control Systems With Time Delays, M. S. Ali, Z. K. Hou, Mohammad N. Noori

Office of the Dean (CENG) Scholarship

This paper investigates the time delay effects on the stability and performance of active feedback control systems for engineering structures. A computer algorithm is developed for stability analysis of a SDOF system with unequal delay time pair in the velocity and displacement feedback loops. It is found that there may exist multiple stable regions in the plane of the time delay pair, which contain time delays greater than the maximum allowable values obtained by previous studies. The size, shape and location of these stable and unstable regions depend on the system parameters and the feedback control gains. For systems with …

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly Jan 1998

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

Each of the five plays by Jean Genet performed before his death in 1986 exists in more than one published version.2 Critics have discussed the differences between the various published versions of each play3 with the exception of Les nègres: the drama commissioned by Raymond Rouleau, first published by Marc Barbezat in 1958, first performed in a production by Roger Blin at the Thèâtre de Lutèce in Paris in 1959, and published in a revised edition the following year.

Why have the changes Genet made to Les nègres remained undiscussed? Perhaps the attention of critics, like that …

Impact Of Temperature Acclimation On Photosynthesis In The Toxic Red-Tide Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Fundyense (Ca28), Oscar Schofield, Joseph Grzymski, Mark A. Moline, Raffael J.M. Jovine Jan 1998

Impact Of Temperature Acclimation On Photosynthesis In The Toxic Red-Tide Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Fundyense (Ca28), Oscar Schofield, Joseph Grzymski, Mark A. Moline, Raffael J.M. Jovine

Biological Sciences

This study assessed the impact of temperature on the photosynthetic activity in the dinoflagellate Alexandrium fundyense (Ca28) for cultures grown at 75 µmol photons m–2 s–1 over a range of temperatures. Increasing light intensity under static temperatures caused a 5-fold decrease in the maximum quantum yield for photosystern II (PSII) (FvlFm) Carbon fixation rates mirrored high-light depressions in (FvlFm). Cells in the presence of streptomycin showed an 83% recovery in (FvlFm); therefore, only a minor proportion of the decline in (FvlFm)was attributable …

Photoadaptive Response During The Development Of A Coastal Antarctic Diatom Bloom And Relationship To Water Column Stability, Mark A. Moline Jan 1998

Photoadaptive Response During The Development Of A Coastal Antarctic Diatom Bloom And Relationship To Water Column Stability, Mark A. Moline

Biological Sciences

The ratio of the xanthophyll pigments diadinoxanthin and diatoxanthin to chlorophyll a [(DD + DT): Chl a] was used as a photoadaptive index during the development of a large Antarctic diatom bloom. This index was found to track fluctuations in the incident solar irradiance and the in situ light field over a 3-order-magnitude change in the water column biomass. Depth profiles of the (DD + DT): Chl a ratio showed that the upper mixed layer, assessed by physical data, was in fact stable over the course of the month. Diel experiments conducted over the same period showed a delayed …

Postfire Succession And Disturbance Interactions On An Intermountain Subalpine Spruce-Fir Forest, Michael J. Jenkins, Christopher Dicus, Elizabeth G. Hebertson Jan 1998

Postfire Succession And Disturbance Interactions On An Intermountain Subalpine Spruce-Fir Forest, Michael J. Jenkins, Christopher Dicus, Elizabeth G. Hebertson

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Four general postfire successional pathways leading to a climax Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmmlilii Parry)-subalpine fir (Abies /asiocarpa [Hook] Nutt.) forest operate on the T.W. Daniel Experimental Forest in northern Utah. Depending on the successional pathway followed. reestablishment of the prefire climax forest will take 200 to 400 years or more due to a rarity of extreme burning conditions. During the long period between catastrophic stand-replacing fires, a variety of other natural disturbances contribute to the varying structure and composition of vegetation and the fuel mosaic in internountain subalpine spruce-fir forests. Disturbances may range from chronic and small scale …

Dual Adaptation And Adaptive Generalization Of The Human Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex, Robert B. Welch, Bruce Bridgeman, Jason A. Williams, Regina Semmler Jan 1998

Dual Adaptation And Adaptive Generalization Of The Human Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex, Robert B. Welch, Bruce Bridgeman, Jason A. Williams, Regina Semmler

Psychology and Child Development

In two experiments, we examined the possibility that the human vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is subject to dual adaptation (the ability to adapt to a sensory rearrangement more rapidly and/or more completely after repeated experience with it) and adaptive generalization (the ability to adapt more readily to a novel sensory rearrangement as a result of prior dual adaptation training). In Experiment 1, the subjects actively turned the head during alternating exposure to a visual-vestibular rearrangement (target/head gain = 0.5) and the normal situation (target/head gain = 0.0). These conditions produced both adaptation and dual adaptation of the VOR but no evidence …

Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Of Surfactants And Phospholipids Monolayers At Liquid-Liquid Interfaces, B. L. Smiley, R. A. Walker, D. E. Gragson, T. E. Hannon, G. L. Richmond Jan 1998

Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Of Surfactants And Phospholipids Monolayers At Liquid-Liquid Interfaces, B. L. Smiley, R. A. Walker, D. E. Gragson, T. E. Hannon, G. L. Richmond

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Work from our laboratory on vibrational sum frequency spectroscopic investigations of molecular ordering at the carbon tetrachloride-water interface is reviewed. Simple charged surfactants adsorbed at the liquid-liquid interface are seen to induce alignment of interfacial water molecules to a degree which is dependent on the induced surface potential. Saturation of water molecule alignment occurs at a surfactant surface concentration corresponding to a calculated surface potential of approximately 160 mV. In complementary studies, the relative degree of hydrocarbon chain ordering within monolayers of symmetric phosphatidylcholines of different chain lengths is inferred by the relative signal contributions of the methyl and methylene …
